Yes there could be a reason or two.

Improvement of a more experienced Stetson Bennett.

OR

A potential gameplan of having Ty Simpson sit for a year.

It appears to me that most rookie QBs probably are just given their jobs because of their draft position and not because they actually beat someone out. And that is whether it is for a starting role or as a backup. Sorta makes sense. With limited snaps in camp teams have got to make an early decision and feed that guy as many snaps as possible to make sure he's ready.
My arguement is that if Ty can't beat Bennett out in camp, this year, than he was not the caliber of player the Rams thought he was...

BUT and even bigger problem is if Bennett beats our Ty, Ty will get effectively no snaps in this offense. The remaining snaps will be on scout team. That is not this offense, that is the opponents offense every week. (Sure it's our verbiage but it's their offense).

BTW, Bennett and Ty were already splitting reps with one's when Stafford was resting in OTAs so it's not like Bennett has shown he's good enough even at this point.

Couldn't guess...

But if Bennett ends up QB2, I think the odds that Bennett showed very well and/or improved are higher than the odds that it's because Simpson disappointed.
COWARD!!!!! ;)

Honestly though, without giving me odds it's very hard for me to take your opinion as more than sky high optimism unmoored by concrete observations.

This is patently false. Rams took, and are taking the long view with Simpson. They knew they were taking him for weeks, months, and were still trying to ink Garoppolo.

You don't actually think the Rams drafted Simpson because they NEEDED him at QB2 in 2026, do you?

Having said this I DO think Simpson wins QB2. But there will be no freak out from me if he doesn't, and in my opinion it also wouldn't change the way the Rams think of him long term.

He is not that good regardless of his noggin being on straight.

Honestly, if Stetson Bennett and Ty Simpson both show well, I'd deal Bennett to a team that needs an above-average backup quarterback for a pick.
I am a big fan of Stetson.
But has he really proven that he's a above average backup or is he just another question mark you bring in to try out?
I don't think you get much for Bennett.
But we've been known to do great things with sixth and seventh round draft picks... so...

Even if Simpson beats of Stetson, I’m not so sure I want our future QB1 thrown into the fire as a rookie (if Stafford was out for a bit). I don’t want to potentially ruin Simpson by playing him too early.

Unless he is CLEARLY ahead of Stetson and he’s ready. But I think he’s better served sitting, learning, getting bigger, letting the game slow down, etc. Young QBs get thrown into the fire way too early these days. Usually to their detriment.

I think the Rams drafted him because they believe he's a very good prospect that while he may need some work should absolutely be better than Bennett off the bat who is a substandard backup who couldn't win the QB 2 job while here.

If he is not better than Bennett off the bat, sure he might end up being good but I think that's a slim chance.

Clear eyes, full heart, can't lose!

You can put all your expectations of Simpson for this season and delay them to next year. The plan is to red shirt him. If Bennett isn't good enough they will get someone else rather than stick Simpson out there. That won't mean they made a bad pick or that they are disappointed in him. Although the media and some here will read it that way. They picked him at 13 because that was there only shot at him and they had bigger plans for next years #1. Not because they think he could start this year. They got him because he showed attributes that they think, with proper coaching, he will grow into at the very least a very good QB. He is a project. You may not like that they spent pick 13 on a project, but that is what they did.

Bennett has NOTHING to do with Simpson. Had Garoppolo re-upped the room would be:

1. Stafford
2. JG
3. Ty

You're just taking your gratuitous cheap shots at the kid because of your mis-diagnosis pre-draft. Have at it, if it helps, I guess.

It's so amazing that some can't see something as simple as this. Or dont want to....

I am one that can be unfair to Bennett, but I knew there were underlying issues with him, plus I just thought he was not that good.
100% agree. Once he left the team, IMO he's not shown any measurable improvement. I wouldn't be surprised if Simpson passes him on the depth chart. Plus, I agree with you about Jimmy G. I think if the Rams need him, he'll come back.

It's amazing you can't take one observation and put it in front of the other.

How is what I'm saying a cheap shot??

I'm simply stating that if Ty is what we hope he is (I think you're inferring that I DON'T HOPE THIS just because I'm a making a well-considered observation that isn't clouded by fandom tsk tsk) than he should have the QB 2 spot wrapped up by end of camp and honestly by the 2nd preseason game.

It's a false inference. It doesn't hold up to reasoning. One does not beget the other. Don't know how to teach logic online.
