This here is why I was adamant about not being bothered if Simpson did not start the season at QB2.

Has less to do with Simpson than it does with Stetson.

I could see Ty being QB3 for a year. 1 year only. 2nd year if Stetson were to keep progressing, and as long as Stafford returns, Stetson would be traded and Simpson MUST be QB2.

To me there's Stafford and the others. Doesn't matter how they're numbered. I'd love both of them to be able to navigate a game but certainly I wouldn't expect it. It's not something I want to know in the near future anyway. So, I won't be upset if Simpson is #3 and Bennett is #2. Hopefully, the OL keeps that part of the equation irrelevant.

Yeah, if Bennett ends up as the #2, it's no knock on Simpson

It wouldn't be unlike 2002 when it was Warner, Martin, Bulger. Martin got one game and then it was Bulger (until he was injured). We'd love to see Bennett become a solid #2 but there's that hope Simpson will quickly surpass him and eventually be the #1 once #9 retires.

The Rams of course want to see Simpson grow quickly into his roll, but I think they want to see the Bennett investment reap some rewards. That to me means he will impress his coaches and earn the #2 spot. This will also simultaneously relieve any undo pressure on the rook and push him to do better. A great environment for growth. I believe this has been the plan. Putting Simpson on the field when the games count this year, because he has limited college starts, is a recipe for failure. The Rams really need Bennett to make there be no question that he is the #2

This will be Bennett's last season with the Rams because his initial contract window is out. Of his 4 years of cheap team control he has not yet been able to win the QB2 role, which means he's a bit of a bust as a pick, given that the expectation was certainly that he would be a potential QB2. If he loses this QB2 competition then that is certainly true. To my eye at least.

What matters is whether the QB2 role is considered filled by the Rams. In other words if Bennett beats out Simpson there is still room for the Rams to say to themselves "we need a little more in that QB2 role" and look at the vet market. I don't think that's likely, but it is important to remember that there is a floor in the minds of the staff that both these QBs must reach.

Lastly OTAs don't test shit with QBs. There is no pressure. There's little interference by DBs. It's just a glorified walkthrough and confidence builder for offensive skill positions. So the media making a big deal out of rumors about progress is a waste of time and effort.

Once camp starts I am sure we'll see some competition start in earnest for QB2 and that's where Bennett should be able to outplay Simpson due to 3 fucking years of studying the scheme. It should be second nature to him. That's a big advantage vs a rook. But also working against Bennett is the fact that the Rams may want that QB3 spot for another position or special teams, and they may see Bennett as likely to pass through waivers and be a PS candidate. So from Bennett's perspective he has to beat the kid in preseason game production and either win that job or give himself a chance to get a depth gig somewhere else. His back is against the wall this year and I think it's gonna be good for him.

Excellent summation, 74.

I EXPECT Bennett to beat out Simpson for Rams 2026 QB2.

I ALSO expect Simpson to beat out Bennett for eventual Rams QB1.

I expect Jimmy Garoppolo to comeback and be the backup to John Matthew Stafford and I expect Stetson Fleming Bennett IV to be released.

If you are sick, disgusted, or otherwise disturbed by this pick, then don't ever, ever, ever say you trust in McVay and Snead again. They loved him, then it's the right pick.
Right.
Picking Ty Simpson turned out to be just part of the plan.
Look at this haul of two all pros, one at the peak of his career, (maybe)...he might go crazy this year) a young cornerback who is getting paid like the best and who wants to be the best. And it only cost us two first rounders and some other picks.
This is more than likely going to end up being a historical and legendary personnel move.

There is no reason other than the Rams grossly erring in their decision making on Ty Simpson and his future for him not to win QB 2 by the end of training camp.
Yes there could be a reason or two.

Improvement of a more experienced Stetson Bennett.

OR

A potential gameplan of having Ty Simpson sit for a year.

It appears to me that most rookie QBs probably are just given their jobs because of their draft position and not because they actually beat someone out. And that is whether it is for a starting role or as a backup. Sorta makes sense. With limited snaps in camp teams have got to make an early decision and feed that guy as many snaps as possible to make sure he's ready.

I certainly hope so. But that will only be the case if Simpson is an elite QB1. There is plenty of room for him to sort much lower in that equation. I'm never a fan of crowning any pick right away, let alone a tactical shot at a QB who spent 75% of his collegiate career riding the pine.

If by this time next year they think Simpson is a backup, they're right back where they were prior with Jimmy at QB2 on a cheap deal. Only difference is they have team control with the QB2, and at least one option if Stafford and family sail off into the sunset after winning the Super Bowl. But if things were to happen that way they would still need to look for QB on the FA market and have him compete with Simpson at the very least. And that may not be good enough for McVay. He has the very highest of expectations with that position.

On the flipside of that though if Simpson impresses enough the Rams may let Stafford move on. We saw that happen with Mahomes, though he was replacing a far lesser QB than Stafford. Mahomes won the practice squad role and their defense reportedly couldn't stop him in practice during that season, so from there making room for him was inevitable. Rams are certainly prone to that type of decision tree if Simpson is good enough.

I get the homer hopes of course and believe it or not I share them. But at this point I'll be happy if Simpson shows good grasp of the offense and gives Bennett a run for his money in preseason games. Just build your game young feller. Stack good days and learn.

Bennett greatly improving.

There! I provided another reason.
