I believe this will end up biting us in the ass. I don’t see why you would invest in a draft pick(we traded up to get him) to just toss him aside after one single off season. Do we not believe in developing players anymore?
So.. they’re not developing players because one 5th rounder didn’t make the team?

Got it.

Y'all are going to chew my ass out for not protecting rookies we drafted with potential while they keep guys like Reeder and Murchison? Really. I get that he's a fifth-round rookie, but we traded up to get him, and that's one of only six draft picks this year. Paul showed enough during the Cowboys game to convince me he's worth at least developing, and now he's going to a rival.

And you're chewing me out for being pissed about it. Fucking really.

It's not that we lost Paul that I am upset about. It's about keeping Reeder on the team instead of Paul that bothers me.

I just want Reeder nowhere close to the team.

And Paul in game 1 looked to have some ability in that game. More so than Reeder ever showed.

But then again, I am just an armchair fan whose knowledge of the game is nothing compared to McVay and Snead.

Yes, REALLY.

He convinced you with one preseason game performance... he did not convince them with an entire offseason program.

Dolac outplayed him.

Reeder fits a completely different need... AND.. is obviously someone who impacts the Rams culture in a positive way.

It's a disproportionate reaction to a trivial roster move. I've read it's something like only 15% of 5th rounders that end up making any real impact or become starters. When you factor in the Rams got Speights and Dolac on UDFA deals, you can see.. clearly.. that they have young talent they're developing at the position... and they upgraded over Reeder with Landman.

This is just one of those forest/trees things, my friend.

I could care less of why they waived Paul. I'm waiting for that first play Reeder fucks up, then I'll join the crowd here pitching a fit.
Why?

You're an old pro here.. you know Reeder's Landman's backup and Paul would be the 3rd stringer at the other position.. right?

It's just so weird.. instead of being excited the Rams have picked up two promising off-ball LBs in Speights and Dolac.. people get obsessed by their whipping boys.

I'm not Reeder "fan" or anything.. I just look objectively at what he is.. and the fact we KNOW what he is, warts and all. Paul? Everyone is angsty over a guy because he was decent in college?

Look.. if Paul had been plucked onto a 53.. I would be more inclined to question the decision.

He wasn't.. he passed through waivers... that means all the other teams in the league decided HE ISN'T WORTH A ROSTER SPOT RIGHT NOW.

Reeder? He probably wouldn't get claimed either.. but he'd be more likely to be signed by someone caught in an injury crunch at the position because he knows the job.

People.... come on.

A guy who couldn't make the team warrants his own thread?

Again... I guess this shows how great a job the Rams are doing with the roster, overall, if this is where people are focused.. angst over losing a 5th ILB.
Careful with the hate, or I’ll bump the Nelson Spruce thread back to front page, pal!!
Best explanation I have heard. Makes sense to me. Crossing McVay has never ended well for anyone.
Yeah maybe Pooh catcalled Veronika on on a group thread like that punk in Detroit?

Dolac did outplay him, true, and I'm not saying he doesn't deserve his spot. I'm saying that Paul should've made this team over Reeder somehow getting a spot on this roster for the millionth time, even if it was only special teams. I have not seen Reeder make an impact play on special teams ever, and that's the only reason why we're keeping him. Fate fucking forbid he actually starts, which is a possibility now that he's on the roster. At least with a younger linebacker with better change-of-direction skills, you'd have more impact plays on teams.

Culture should not impact this team at this point; we've had total cancerous idiots like Marcus Peters and Desean Jackson (and some would say Aqib Talib or Jalen Ramsey fall into that category) on this team, and culture hasn't been lost just because they were on the team. We have a strong enough coaches in McVay and Shula, plenty of leaders on defense and special teams. We don't need to keep Reeder on the team to impact the "culture".

It's about talent, period, and I don't think Reeder would be more talented on special teams than Paul would've been, and now we've wasted not one, but three draft picks (the fifth and the two sixths we traded to pick him).

My second issue is not that Paul is gone; it's about people's reactions to him being gone, like suddenly, he doesn't have any talent and that we're "better off". If we were "better off", we wouldn't have drafted him in the first place. I wouldn't have seen so many people on here claiming that Paul was going to take one of the starting linebacker spots by storm - and they had every right to believe it. And now that he's gone, it's a positive?

I think McVay said it clearly on why Reeder and Dolan beat out Paul. It's about performance and winning and earning a spot on the final roster. It's also an ongoing process all season. The bottom of the roster is always getting churned as you need to fill spots as attrition takes its toll during the season. Reeder could get cut, brought back, cut again. Bottom of the roster is always a fluid thing.

I get all that Pupped. I'm just used to the Rams braintrust obsessing over marginal players and letting promising prospects go. Paul and Lampkin the latest. Paul to Shecocks and Lampkin to Iggles. I think the Rams fucked themselves.
But hey, we still have Reeder.who knows the call, how to set the D, is a locker room fave, good ST'er, and marginal at best on the field.

I’d be willing to bet it was a team culture fit/character issue. The Rams don’t mess around when it comes to expediting that stuff.

IMO fans are making too much of this cut but I understand it.

Could be.

See Cam Akers, who was most recently cut by the Aints.

Yeah.. and being in the wrong place on STs will do more than lead to a guy not making a play... it will allow the other team to blow them up.

The shortsightedness in not understanding that.. yes, being in the right position in a structure can help the overall unit.. even if you're not making a ton of plays.. is completely lost on you when it comes to the STs argument.. and in the value Reeder brings on D as a veteran.

I don't think Paul doesn't have talent.. I don't think he's ready to be on a 53.. AND THE LEAGUE AGREES.. that's all my point is. He may end up being a player! The Rams obviously wanted another young ILB to develop.. and found one in Dolac.

I have no idea why people would've had him pencilled in at LB ahead of Landman and Speights.. none.

You're so myopic and hyper focused on one thing.. potential.. that you're ignoring all the demands that come with being on a roster spot right now.

Did any of those guys get on a 53?
No.

So.. fucked themselves? Come on.

That's my guess, when McVay hit the "I wish him the best" line in yesterday's press conference I thought "uh oh, Pooh done pissed someone off" and figured this would be the result.

There's that aspect.

What if the Rams didn't even try to sign Paul because of what he brought to the building?
