NFL analyst says Rams' UDFA was one of the best at his position in the 2025 NFL Draft

Tyler Greenawalt
Rams Wire

NFL.com's Lance Zierlein couldn't believe what he was saying when he watched tape North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton on a recent flight ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft.

While watching the soon-to-be first-round pick by the Los Angeles Chargers, Zierlein said he kept seeing standout plays from UNC's right guard, Willie Lampkin. Despite his smaller frame (6-1, 285 pounds), Lampkin was consistently holding his blocks and opening running lanes for Hampton.

“He's the best guard tape that I've seen so far... and that’s not hyperbole," Zierlein said on Check the Mic with Steve Palazzolo & Sam Monson. "Had he been 6-foot-4, or even 6-3-and-a half probably, 312 pounds, he’s probably a first-round pick.”

Instead, the Rams signed Lampkin and 16 undrafted free agents after the 2025 NFL Draft. And if Zierlein is to be believed, Lampkin could be another steal for the Rams.

Lampkin was a consistent starter all throughout college. He played in 61 collegiate games (38 at Coastal Carolina and 23 at UNC) and, as Zierlein noted, a great run-blocker for Hampton.

The Rams have had a lot of success with UDFAs in recent years, too. Left tackle Alaric Jackson, who just signed a huge extension, went undrafted. Starting inside linebacker Omar Speights wasn't draft either.

Lampkin has some competition to make the team. While he wouldn't supplant Kevin Dotson anytime soon, he'll need to beat out KT Leveston and fellow UDFA Ben Dooley. Zierlein has a lot of faith in him, though.

I'm on the Willie Lampkin train.

It's extremely rare that I think "wow" when watching the highlight reel of an interior lineman, for cripes sakes. But this guy had many plays where he utterly dominates and steers guys WAY out of the play.

I'm thinking Lampkin makes the final 53, because he would be stolen off the practice squad.

Hope he shines like many of us expect he will.

So that would make 3 2025 UDFAs who would likely get stolen if cut - Lampkin, Dolac, Wedig.

I'm curious on why people think Lampkin, Dolac, Wedig would be stolen off the PS when the entire league just had multiple chances to draft those guys but passed on them?

Not now but perhaps after preseason if any of them standout.

I’m really intrigued by lampkin.

First try him at center and you may have a huge upgrade there.

If not then absolutley try him at FB.

Not saying they will definately show - but if they do thru the preseason - and due to injuries or level of play - hell yeah that could be picked up.

I can't speak to the other 2, but to my eye Lampkin is a "boom or bust" type guy. He's only 5'11" (at most) and 280 pounds. That lack of size is unheard of. There isn't a single OL in the entire NFL who is that short. Not even close.

(Lampkin might be saved by his freakishly long spider-monkey arms, however).

So to me, his preseason tape will tell the tale. If he is even mediocre, then his size limitations mean he's a bust. But if his play resembles the stud we saw in college and at the Senior Bowl, then other teams will want him, too.

But yeah-- I agree in general with your observation that all other 31 teams passed on him multiple times. He's an outlier for sure.

The Rams seem to keep taking chances on undersized guys that other teams won’t consider at all.

I call it the Donald Effect.

Agreed. For example-- imagine a Defensive Tackle in the NFL playing at only 258 pounds. Not possible, right? But here's the quote from Aaron Donald himself:

"In 2018, (that) was my lightest year. I played that whole year probably around 250-260 that whole year. I was 258 in the Super Bowl in 2018. I was 258 as a defensive tackle in the National Football League in the Super Bowl."

Oh and by the way-- AD had 20.5 sacks and won DPOY in 2018.

So yeah, the Rams are understandably gonna roll the dice on guys who are "too short and/or too light" but show a ton of heart and have great game film. This year, Josaiah Stewart and Willie Lampkin are two examples.

Lambkin isn’t light. That weight/height ratio can’t help but produce torque. I bet he finds a roll on this team.

258 geez. Did not know that.

I have hope for Lampkin.

Jason Kelce was 280 when drafted. A 6th rounder with this scouting report, "Kelce has the mobility and mentality to make it as a reserve center in the NFL. However, does not have the size or power to project as a starter."

And by stolen, it means that they will be signed to a team's 53 man roster based solely off the same college tape that's been available the whole time. Pretty funny stuff
