Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'm frustrated with our edge players, namely Verse, Young, and Stewart. I realize that both Verse and Young are Pro Bowlers but it seems like time after time they give up the edge and let the runner outside. Last year vs the Eagles, Verse got sucked inside on one of Saquon's long, back-breaking runs. Last night I saw the same thing. I played defensive end and know that shitty feeling when you get sealed inside and blow your assignment. It only takes one time to learn from that mistake yet I see our edge guys doing it repeatedly. Maybe Shula has them diving inside to seal the gap but, if that's the case, there's nobody outside to contain, at least it appears that way. I think they really need to correct this if we're going to stop Walker this week. He's a good runner but we should be able to contain him if we just mind our gaps.

To me the problem is our DB's play 10 yards off the line of scrimmage and aren't the best tacklers, and other teams are seeing that.

I agree with that too. I think we're too predictable on defense. Watch New England. You never know who is coming or from where.

Watch Verse blow up a pulling guard on 3rd and goal on the play Williams and Lake turned Swift him into a helicopter. Not a sexy game but more a meat and potatoes game by our edge guys. Also I can't remember the quarter but Williams tried to rollout off play action and Young mirrored him forcing an incompletion. These aren't the days of Long just blowing upfield with no regard for playing the run. Our Edge guys play team defense.

Verse had things he could have done better but he did a lot really good too. Same with every player on the team in all 3 phases of the game. Funny though we have a thread complaining about 3 D players one which got hurt in the game after a Day where the D carried the team.

Every single one of our edges (yes, even Hampton; he had an awesome gap fill-in on a Landman stuff in the fourth quarter or overtime), I thought, did fairly well. They didn't get sacks, but Williams is a hard quarterback to get down, and they kept him contained for the vast majority of the game.

Yeah, the defense complaints after yesterday's game don't make much sense. Verse's biggest problem yesterday's were two crucial penalties, but otherwise he played well.

I was frustrated with this last night as well, but in hindsight, look at Caleb's stats. He's a bottom 5 qb when not pressured, its when hes pressured is where he steps up. So its frustrating that we didnt get home, but maybe worked out in our favor.

I think he had 4 missed tackles on run plays too. I'm his biggest advocate but unlike some of his critics who won't ever point out his good plays/games I can point out when he does bad.

Didn't realize he had so many missed tackles. I take it all back because that's not good. I didn't see a contain problem, though.

Our D played great, guaranteed there was a lot of talk about not letting Caleb beat you.

He had a couple good runs and that ridiculous throw, but all of those plays came late.

Getting pressure from your edges can hurt you against a guy like that and that likely plays into the overall game plan

Yeah, if I had to guess, he played his assignments well and that includes crashing down on numerous occasions with the outside gap responsibility left to the safety, LB or corner.

The difference between Young and Verse is that Young doesn't seem to get consistent pressure. But his speed was critical to preventing Caleb from scrambling, and we saw Stewart lose that contain on one of their chunk plays in the passing game.

I have to think QBs are not holding the ball much, but then against Bryce Young and Caleb yesterday, there were MULTIPLE times where they had clean pockets which will get you killed in the NFL. I've said it before and I'll keep beating the drum.....I think we have 6 players who are anywhere from B- to B+ players - but we don't have that guy who is going to say "I'm ending this shit". Hopefully Verse turns into that guy, but as it is, he's kind of just a different iteration of Chris Long, with more speed. Really solid player, but nowhere near the top edge defenders.

The D was fantastic- especially when it mattered. They won us the game.
I do have slight concerns about the lack of pass rush - more so lack of sacks. We need a huge pass rush to beat Darnold & seachickens

I honestly think the discipline led to fewer sacks. They were clearly more concerned with contain than just blindly getting to Caleb. Yes, sacks are great - but the pass rush totally did its job.

A few of those runs to the right, we were not necessarily containing the edge that well which is why they were bouncing it outside and getting decent gains. The D line does need to be just a bit better on keeping their rush lanes vs mobile QBs but the real issue for our D to me is tackling. Clean that up and we dominate.
