For those interested but are too busy to watch the entire Program "NFL Draft: The Pick Is In" on Roku (link was posted), the majority of the Rams' related material appears between the 40-minute and 65-minute marks.

Good idea to watch from the beginning, and fast-forward through most of the non-Rams' stuff which is fluff. Better to fast forward because there's some Rams' material before and after the above-noted time period.

There's so much focus on the NFL Draft. A ton of information comes-out over time (before and after the Draft); and that allows for reasonable speculation and opinions are drawn. However, it's arrogant to believe any us KNOW what the Rams were thinking and intended; and what transpired through the Draft process.

The Rams material in this Program removes a ton of the speculation.

It was Bowers and Murphy (in that order) targeted for a trade-up; and we now know exactly what was offered. Verse was 3rd on their list and highly regarded, with Fiske and two un-named players with or behind him. They were not going to trade-up for Verse but would have traded-back if he was not available at #19. With the trade-back, they likely would have taken Fiske or one of the other two (un-named) prospects. After getting Verse, they were aggressive and thrilled to add Fiske with the trade-up in Round Two.

Early in the Program, before the start of the Draft or very early in Round One, Snead says to McVay:
"If we get Bowers, Murphy or Verse, and even Fiske" ... then someone adds ... "that's a good day's work baby"
Thanks for the heads-up on the sections of Rams stuff in the Roku program. Rams material was from minutes 40 to 53 and then again from 59 to 1:06.

Amazing how hard the Rams tried to trade up for Bowers (multiple times!) and then again for Murphy.

Rams also offered several trades in the top of the second round until Carolina finally agreed to a trade. Many of us thought this was a near-perfect Rams draft, but amazing to see how different it could have been.

Rams are usually so tight-lipped about everything, I'm kinda surprised they let people document their internal deliberations, even after the fact.

Great to see that call between Verse and Fiske.

Rams relying on their "North Star" in draft decisions-- how much does the player "want it"? That way they can focus exclusively on coaching, and not worry about managing the total person.

Great to see that all-access view into the Rams draft in real time.

No ... not at all.
This is an NFL Films product.

You should watch it.

This was NOT put-out by the Rams.

Again ... You Really should Watch It.

No. It's clear, the Rams knew neither Bowers, nor Byron Murphy would make it to #19.
McVay actually says those exact words.

Really Dude ... Just Watch it.

Turner?
You're killing me here.

Seriously ... Watch It!
Was talking about The Rams episode on the GRIND ! They don’t edit that ?

Same - but yes I will watch the NFL Production just 4u- appreciate the recommendation.

15. Latu
16.Murphy
16. Dallas Turner - who a lot of Mocks had going to Atlanta at #8

Bowers - don’t know how that would have looked for The Rams.
-Like I said ,no matter what either was right or wrong if what The Rams wanted to do.

IMO - which is not Oldschools who actually hit The Rams draft pick. They(rams) couldn’t be HAPPIER!
-especially after OTA’s

I think this guy echoes what a lot of us are feeling about how this years draft played out, especially after watching the Roku draft piece.

Missing out on Brock Bowers could be blessing in disguise for Rams

(There are images in the original post to help illustrate some of the writers points.)

Avideo recently surfaced of Sean McVay and Les Snead in the Los Angeles Rams NFL Draft war room attempting a trade up to the early part of the first round for Georgia TE Brock Bowers. LA tried to trade up with the New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings before coming to terms with the fact they were unlikely to land the prolific pass catcher.

In the end the Rams stayed put in the first round and selected Florida State’s OLB Jared Verse at 19 overall. They also were able to hold onto their second and third round picks. After an aggressive trade up to the early second round in order to choose Verse’s college teammate DE Braden Fiske, LA landed Michigan RB Blake Corum in the third round.

Why trading for Brock Bowers was risky

I was completely in favor of the Rams trading up for Bowers. I called before the draft that LA would trade up the Denver Broncos’ pick at 12 in order to select the TE. Instead there was a run on quarterbacks and Denver took the sixth QB of the first round at 12 and the Las Vegas Raiders couldn’t pass up taking Bowers at 13.

Selecting a tight end in the first round on its own is a risky proposition. Even when we look across Matthew Stafford’s career—playing with as many as three first round picks—to see how TE’s have fared statistically, there’s a grouping of the good to great tight ends in the 500-800 yards range each year. A tight end crossing the 1,000-yard threshold is extremely rare, but that’s generally the bar we set for the pass catchers that are taken in the first half of the first round.

Even Kyle Pitts, who surpassed 1,000 yards as a rookie, for the Atlanta Falcons has faced nearly unrealistic expectations over his career. Stafford played with Eric Ebron, Brandon Pettigrew, and TJ Hockenson over his time with the Detroit Lionsand it’s difficult to distinguish their production over lower drafted players like Tyler Higbee or Tony Scheffler. Dalton Kincaid, Noah Fant, Hayden Hurst, OJ Howard, Evan Engram, and David Njoku were all recently taken in the first round and few have produced at a star level.

In fairness, the best fit for Bowers in terms of potential production likely would have been in the Rams offense with McVay pulling the strings and Stafford being a reliable presence under center. Instead, Bowers heads to Las Vegas where it’s unsure who will be his starter quarterback—either Aidan O’Connell or Gardner Minshew—with an offensive coordinator who was recently fired by the Chicago Bears in Luke Getsy.

Then there’s the idea that the Rams would need to give up multiple of their early picks to move up into the first round. That easily would cost LA their second round pick and probably their third—which for convenience we can call Fiske and Corum (though it’s debatable whether Fiske would be available at the Rams’ original second round slot).

Does the collection of players outweigh Bowers?

The Rams used the draft to rebuild their defense, and the landscape of that unit would be dramatically different if you take out Verse and Fiske in exchange for another offensive weapon.

If LA did trade up for Bowers, who would be starting at EDGE opposite Byron Young? Likely Michael Hoecht, who was tendered as a restricted free agent, or fourth round pick Brennan Jackson. That’s a stark drop off from an immediate contributor like Verse.

What about filling Aaron Donald’s absence at three technique if you don’t land Fiske? Would the Rams instead turn to last year’s Mr. Irrelevant in Desjaun Johnson or would they be forced to bring in a veteran late into the offseason?

While Blake Corum should be a backup for 2024, he should still fill an important role for the Rams as insurance for Kyren Williams. We saw LA’s offense take a major step back without Williams in the wildcard loss to the Lions, and Corum provides a similar skillset and he should be able to fill in seamlessly short-term. Williams also has a lengthy injury history and there’s a realistic chance we see Corum start at some point this season.

On the surface the Rams seem to be in a better spot with the collection of Verse, Fiske, and Corum than they would have been with Bowers alone. Still, LA needs a third quality pass catcher behind Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp—and they still may have an opportunity to add one before the regular season rolls around.

LA hasn’t paid the cost for trading up for Fiske yet

While weighing the potential costs of a trade up for Bowers, it’s important to remember that LA sent the Carolina Panthers their 2025 second rounder in order to move up 13 picks for Fiske. That cost was not paid with this draft class, but that bill comes due next year.

Generally, I view the draft as a crap shoot. I’d rather have two chances to pick a quality player in the second round than putting my eggs in one basket and packaging those two picks for one dart throw. While the Rams seem confident in Fiske’s ability and chemistry with Verse, there’s no certainty that he’ll turn into a reliable player for Los Angeles.

If Fiske disappoints as a rookie, not having a second round pick next year could sting for Rams fans.

Old school but(dead) whoever posting BS.

Not sure if I’m right, but watched it.Still only at pick 14.Les Snead made the call, which IMO is a BS trade over for Brock Bowers & maybe even played Sean Mcvay ?

He offered the JETS #19,#52,#99 to get Bowers. -Pick number whatever & a 6th. — Les Snead says 31 other teams wanted a player they may have wanted more than them.SILLY Statement!!! —The question should have been how bad did Les Snead really like Brock Bowers ??? His offer came off the table when asking the RAIDERS what they wanted!!! WHERE was #99 ? Plus wanting #112 back in return.

Les Snead got into it & Mcvay wanted Murray & knowing Seattle was a far as he or Bowers were going to go. He told Les let’s go it & move up.Les Snead said NO!! not smart. Mcvay told him being aggressive is & Les said I’ve been aggressively smart my whole LIFE.

Then Les Snead said as long as 2 of the 6 are still there we will be alright .

Then the #19,#99,154 for #15,##194
Colts said no & Mcvay was like a kid who didn’t get what he wanted for his birthday.

BTW - Mcvay is why The Rams Drafted Logan Brussss !! He actually wanted to Trade Up for him. —In training camp A.J. Acuri was the better rookie. At one point The Rams cut Bruss & kept AJ. Not sure why or who is better now ? Both IMO get cut this year. Maybe 1 stays on the practice squad. Will they still be NFL players ? They will get good looks in preseason for other NFL teams to poach.

What’s super funny is that scene where Les Snead talks about Cinncy being on the clock right after losing Murray is when he said it’s right there in front of you.

Mcvay says don’t mean to be a DICK!!! Then right around the same time Cinncy went DT & The Rams got Jared Verse Mcvay was still pissed ,but TOTALLY STOKED !!

He said we still need a guy with HEART !! Said Les Snead is a DICK in a good way!! He also answered yes we are(like brothers).

After OTA’s & how Jared Verse has been a LEADER as a NEW ROOKIE is what The Rams needed. He makes Hoecht & B. Young that much better.I LOVE HOECHT!!

Nice vid thx for posting that. :thumbsup1:

This draft boy. :startstruck:
That was the best video of our draft I have seen yet. And right from the horses mouth so to speak.
Its apparent that it was Fisher holding the Rams back, not Les.
But you know, if they had won a lot in the early teens in St. Louis they might still be there in that dark, dark dome.
Thanks Mr Fisher.

The trade compensation makes more sense for a qb than a te.

.

I agreed with you yesterday when you posted that you had not seen a confirmation the trade-up target was Brock Bowers.

However, after watching this NFL Films documentary "NFL Draft: The Pick Is In" on Roku (link has been posted), it seems pretty clear that the initial trade-up target was Bowers; and the secondary target was Byron Murphy.

Here is our gun that was smoking

God damn I’m glad they didn’t get Bowers. I would pissed about this trade.

That Roku thing made it look like the Jets abused the Vikings - may have been reality-tv style editing, but damn. That "something for nothing" line.

Also, hard for me to admit, but it looks like some/many of those "draft insiders" who each said the Rams were targeting different players, might have been right.

Good of Roku to edit out all the Rams interest in Latu.

So glad the draft fell the way it did. I have not seen Byron Murphy play, and I trust Mcvay when he said "there's no one like him", but we have seen D Tackles struggle in the pros when they are consistently going against 325 pound guards, and the draft capital was waaay too much to give up IMO. I'm akso sure Murphy benefited from having 375 pound Sweat next to him. I am still interested in seeing how he develops but since he's a Seahawk I hope he sucks -lol. And there is no reason to believe Fiske won't be as good or better.

Re Bowers, I agree with you folks wondering how much he would get used in that offense. He might turn out great but the Rams really needed help on defense and hopefully they strike gold again with this draft.

Me too. I really think we had a terrific draft, just as good as last years -- and now with both drafts under our belt, we are READY FOR WAR!
In 2 short years, we have completely revamped
- Shored up Dline, Edge
- Shored up Oline, RB, WR
- Even K & P (Ethan Evans, watch his squat videos... just gotta keep that kid from"out kicking the coverage")

Evans needs to focus on height and not length.

Considering the state of the Raiders, I think they should have traded with the Rams and gave up Bowers. Next years second round pick could possibly help them move up for a QB in 2025.

Maybe they will pull off a Shanahan and make it work with a cheap QB.

If Verse turns out to be an all pro the Jets, Raiders and Colts are gonna regret not making a trade. If the Rams did give up 19, 52 and 99, we don't know what they woulda done with 83. Would they forego defense altogether on day 1 and 2 and pick Corum? Or would they have felt a need to grab a defensive player at 83?

I do believe Verse will be an impact player year one. Don't know about Fiske early on. But I think over the next 4 years we will have a solid DT. He's a guy McVay really wanted. Enough to give up a future 2nd for. The work ethic and high motor is impressive.

I think most of us are pretty happy the way things turned out with the first two days. An impact edge rusher. An athletic defensive tackle with a high intensity motor who never gives up on a play. A stout running back with good vision, quickness and power to get the tough yards. And a ball hawking safety who is always around the ball.
