The margin of difference between top and bottom teams in the nfl is so small that “any given Sunday is a real thing”

This is why directed calls have an outsized effect and why only truly dominant teams can overcome them.

There would be a lot more less popular teams winning if games were called straight up even if the score were lopsided

Bad calls exist and presumably should go both ways. That is unfortunately part of the game. Does this forum really think officiating crews purposefully tilt their calls (or are instructed to tilt their calls) towards one team over another?

serious question, did you watch superbowl 36?

.

I tender Superbowl 36 as Exhibit A your honour.

Ok, to anyone supporting officials, please explain how these superstar officials missed this MOST OBVIOUS PENALTY EVER!

Denver, attempts the onside kick at end of game. The whole world has their eyes pinned on the kicker. I assume AT LEAST ONE of the loser refs does too.

So, the kicker fakes one way, resets and kicks the other. BUT, when he plants his foot to reset, he stepped over the line.

Now, I'm not a paid professional ref, BUT HOW DO THESE F'Ing Zebras not call OFFSIDES! The guy stepped over the line, offsides, for THE WHOLE WORLD TO SEE...and, NOTHING! NO FLAG! HOW DO THEY NOT CALL THAT, THE MOST OBVIOUS PENALTY IN THE HISTORY OF FOOTBALL!

What if Denver recovered the Onsides Kick, and tied the game up or won?

How can these people not call the beyond obvious???

I'm so pissed off just talking about this ref crap.

You know what they get from me? Either you're fired or a Z--!

After this non call, I'm convinced the refs are rigged! Even non-referees wouldn't miss this call.

The NFL better be careful. There used to be a huge karate tournament; The Long Beach Internationals. It's gone. No more tournament. You know why? Judging! The judging became so awful that it wasn't worth the effort to prepare for and then get screwed by some dumb ass judge. Learn from history NFL. Learn from history. Right now...total embarrassment!

The refs are damn awful this season. It didn't matter but near the end of the game, they call an offsides on the Rams when clearly the Broncos had a false start. And again, watching AD and Suh get held on nearly every play.

But hey, 6-0 and there's no team that strikes fear in me on our schedule. Most of the top teams in the NFC have multiple losses. The Saints have one loss but they have a really tough schedule which includes a game with the Rams.

Ha @Steve808. We were making the same point on the onsides kick at the same time! What awful refs!!!

You are correct. These are the best refs the world has to offer. It is very hard to see things at the speed of the NFL. I officiate High School and semi-pro ball. The constant evaluation, constant correction at that semi pro level wears me out. I lose sleep over the missed calls and bad calls I make. I have friends at all levels of college and I know Division 1 college and NFL is off the charts as far as evaluation goes. It's a pressure cooker and they want nothing more than to make the correct call on every play.

There is also rules vs. philosophy. A lot of times fans see a rule broken but by philosophy we don't call it. That's a whole other discussion.

Honorable and well rounded take Jet. Still, I tend to see them like...

You know. Maybe Seeing-Eye-Dogs could really help. Why hasn't GoodHell tried it yet?

I keep saying it. When big money is at stake, anything goes. Refs could be shaving points. The NFL could be dictating outcomes. If it matters for any reason, they alter the calls. Keep the audience happy, and keep the owners happy. If you knew all the things that Kraft did for the NFL, to propel them financially then you would clearly see why the Patriots get league wide favoritism.

It started with a big game here or there. A Superbowl every couple of years. Then the league sees how controlling outcomes actually can benefit them more than they ever dreamed. But, they still keep it to big games, just make it a more common occurrence. Then the owners start talking to each other about how dumb the fans are and how much more money they are making by controlling outcomes, so they started doing it in regular season games. Now it's rampant. Any game that they have the slightest reason to guide, they affect it by bad calls.

My guess is Elway cried for some help. You can't have the Broncos look as hapless as they have this year. It's bad for business. New England? Who better to top an undefeated juggernaut. And the Cowboys thrashing Jville? Seems fishy, since Dallas' offense has sucked all year.

Super bowls? 9/11? How fitting for America if the Patriots won? Hurricane Katrina decimated New Orleans? Let's give them a Superbowl win. America loves a heart warming ending. Bettis retires at home in Detroit? Another fairytale ending.

I've been saying forever that if there is a financial incentive, someone will eventually attempt to facilitate it.

Yesterday seemed much more like an attempt to keep the game close and wasn't near as ugly as the attempt to maintain Seattle's competitive relevance against a division rival.

I'm not upset though, McVay did a great job staying disciplined and taking advantage of the team's opportunity to rush for over 200 yards. Not only did he keep a lot of his playbook hidden, but he also left a opposing DCs perplexed with how to stop his offense. It was also nice to see the defense show that they can handle close games.

Anytime huge amounts of money change hands, there is a criminal element that tries to influence or get their hands on some, if not all, of it. Anyone who thinks legal gambling is completely clean and does not have criminals trying to influence the outcome is living a sheltered life.
Everyone knows Las Vegas Casinos were started by the Chicago Mob. The Mob is still there even if you don't see them. Same with Indian Casinos and off-shore gambling.

Another aspect is ALL 32 NFL owners have majority shares in Fantasy football. FanDual and DraftKing are exclusively owned by the NFL (owners). The amount of money FF generates for NFL owners is huge, and is one of their major incomes. What most FF players don't know is that they are playing aginst computer generated oponents in their league, their couple hundred against hundreds of thousands.

I have long believed NFL game outcomes have been influenced by officials. Point spread betting accounts for hundreds of millions in wagers every week. A few call by officials at critical points in a game can change who wins and who loses millions.

You can be sure NFL officials have been approached and offered houses, cars, putting their kids through college, etc. Has any of them accepted?

I point to how games are being affected by officiating. Personally, I think not all games are completely free of outside influence.

And again, watching AD and Suh get held on nearly every play.

^^^ This.
How many times will one of these guys break through opposing offensive lines (and thereby getting away from all the traffic), get almost horse-collared by the opposing offensive lineman on his way to the QB...and nothing?

How can this be missed, time and time again???? :banghead:

You underestimate their level of greed and their ablility to sheild themselves from complicity flv.

Hundreds of millions of $$ is "very little to gain"? I defer to the saying " risk vs reward"

Believe what you want. For me, I wouldn't risk one dollar betting on an NFL game.

I actually didn't think the refs were one sided in this game. There were a lot of missed calls, but they went both ways. The Facemask call was legit, it just happened before the instant replay. If you watch the play it is no-doubt a facemask.
