Pat Shurmur, Sam Bradford officially reunite

The stunning news that Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner has resigned carries with it news that should be somewhat encouraging for Vikings fans: Pat Shurmur takes over as the architect of the offense.
Shurmur served as offensive coordinator in St. Louis when quarterback
Sam Bradford joined the team as the first overall pick in the draft in 2010. That year, Bradford became the NFL’s offensive rookie of the year.
Shurmur also coordinated the offense in Philadelphia last year, Bradford’s lone season with the Eagles. Late in 2015, after coach Chip Kelly had been fired, Shurmur served as interim head coach — and Bradford closed the year with some stellar performances.
Now, Shurmur (who was one of the big reasons the Vikings made the trade in August) and Bradford are together again, with no buffers or layers or other philosophies or personalities in between. Setting aside what this means for 2017, when
Teddy Bridgewater may be back, the Shurmur-Bradford reunion could make things better for the Minnesota offense over the next nine game.
Frankly, things can’t get much worse.
Even more frankly, unless Shurmur also is going to play tackle at a high level, it may not get much better.

Norv Turner: Resignation in best interest of team

Norv Turner resigned as the offensive coordinator for the Vikings on Wednesday morning in a move that adds another big change of plans to a long list in Minnesota this season.
The team has had to replace their projected quarterback, running back, left tackle and right tackle because of injuries and they’ve been working on integrating quarterback
Sam Bradford into the mix on the fly after trading for him just before the start of the season. The results of their offensive work haven’t been very good — 31st in yards, 20 total points in two straight losses — but Turner’s departure still came as a surprise.
Turner issued a statement about his resignation on Wednesday that didn’t provide a great deal of insight into why Turner chose this moment to walk away.
“I have tremendous respect for Mike Zimmer, our coaching staff, and our players and at this time I think it is in the best interest of the team to step down,” Turner said. “I thank the Wilf family for my time here in Minnesota and want to see our players and coaches achieve success.”
Turner will be replaced by Pat Shurmur on an interim basis. Zimmer will meet the media later on Wednesday in a session that’s sure to feature a lot of discussion about Turner’s decision and the direction of the Vikings offense under its new management.

Mike Zimmer was “very, very surprised” by Norv Turner’s decision to resign

Norv Turner wasn’t going to be pushed, if he hadn’t jumped.
Vikings coach Mike Zimmer, meeting with reporters on Wednesday, said he was “very, very surprised” by the decision of Turner to resign. Zimmer said that the decision was made solely by Turner.
“Norv is a very, very good friend of mine,” Zimmer said. “He’s helped me tremendously in the three years that I’ve been here. He’s had an unbelievable career. He’s been my right hand man since I’ve been here.”
There were no disputes or disagreements, Zimmer said, regarding the offense.
Zimmer said that he believes Turner is “OK” from a health perspective, but Zimmer wasn’t unequivocal on that point.
“I don’t know, you’d have to ask him,” Zimmer said. “He didn’t tell me he was ill.”
Zimmer also said it wasn’t a retirement but a resignation, which implies Turner will surface somewhere else.
Moving forward, Zimmer indicated that Pat Shurmur likely will have the same autonomy that Turner had when running the offense, calling it “almost 100-percent total free will in everything they’ve done offensively.”
This year, especially lately, the offense hasn’t done much. It will now be up to Shurmur to do more.
For Zimmer, it’s clearly an emotional juncture of the season. His voice broke near the end of the press conference when discussing his relationship with Turner.

Norv Turner’s resignation leaves Vikings in disarray, again
Posted by Mike Florio on November 2, 2016
However the 2016 season ends for the Vikings, they will have dealt with as much adversity as any Vikings team in recent memory, if not ever.
From the
Teddy Bridgewater injury to the
Sam Bradford trade to injuries that have resulted in the placement of
Adrian Peterson,
Matt Kalil, and
Andre Smith on injured reserve to a shocking 5-0 start to a two-game losing streak that left them looking like one of the worst teams in football to the abrupt resignation of offensive coordinator Norv Turner, the roller coaster continues to rocket from highs to lows.
This one may bring the open-air purple train to lowest of the lows, especially as the Vikings try to right a sinking ship. At the end of the same day devoted to game planning, Turner communicated his resignation to head coach Mike Zimmer. Now, at a time when the Vikings should be installing that plan in an effort to be best prepared to face the Lions, the Vikings are trying to process this unexpected turn of events.
Zimmer told reporters within the hour that he has yet to meet with the team. Quarterback Sam Bradford later told reporters he learned of the move not from the organization but from his wife, who received an alert on her phone regarding the move.
Bradford, as a result, has yet to even talk to new offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur about the approach to be employed only four days from now, when Minnesota hosts Detroit.
And so on what otherwise is the most important day of the workweek, the Vikings will be distracted by the news of Turner’s sudden disappearance, wondering while they process the development why he threw in the towel on a 5-2 team. The only good news for the Vikings is that they’ve encountered plenty of dysfunction this year, which may make them even more prepared to process the latest screwball from one of the screwiest seasons any team could ever endure.
