It's possible to trade a pick you don't currently own?
I believe he is technically correct.

A team could add substitute compensation to a pick they could potentially not own as a condition of another trade.

Admittedly, there is no historical precedent but I couldn't find anything to say it can't happen.

They made it so you couldn't trade a pick that you don't currently own 3 years ago. It was done because teams were trading comp picks and they didn't end up getting them.

The Rams anyway can probably activate a clause that makes it a definite 3rd round pick sent over to Cleveland. Upon activating this clause they are then prohibited from Trading Myles Garrett to an AFC North Club . They are probably not doing it as of now because they are keeping their options open.

I was a big fan of Verse. But, my opinion of why he had trouble finishing with sacks, is because he isn't a fluid athlete. He seems a bit stiff. If you watch Garrett, he is 270, but has such fluid athleticism, that he moves like a 200 pounder. It is really amazing to watch him. I have to remind myself how big he really is.

Verse was one of my favorite Rams. Tough to have to give him up to get Garrett. Having said that Garrett is the finisher the Defense needs. I'm sure it was on McVays mind that even with the crazy two point play we still should have been able to close out the hawks and win that game, but the rush just couldn't get home. We also couldn't close out philly earlier as well. Hopefully this trade solves that issue.
Well they also addressed the secondary which was also a huge issue that contributed to the pass rush not always getting there. Overall, the defense has had a lot more firepower added to it with the secondary additions alone. Adding a pass rusher like Garrett takes further advantage of that.

Verse is the rhino. Garrett is the Tiger. Both impressive but very different in their attack.

I believe you're referring to the ruling when we tried to trade for Sony Michel in 2021 but the league said we couldn't trade a comp pick we didn't have yet. That would be different from an original pick previously involved in a conditional trade. It could be the league rules no on that as well but there is no precedent there.

Lol

OK

Can't trade a pick we don't own except when ROD wants to.

Snark aside, I feel like you're missing the nuance of this discussion.

We absolutely don't own a comp pick we haven't been awarded yet, even though we tried to get away with it. An original pick that's involved in a conditional trade is still owned by us until it isn't.

We've made or at least I've seen trades made in the past something like a 4th round pick that could conditionally become a 3rd, 2nd, or even 1st based on how the player performs. Are you saying that team can't trade any of those picks moving forward? Ultimately, they traded 1 pick not 4 picks so I kind of doubt that's the case. You can't change the terms of the original trade but it's reasonable to believe you could change the terms of a subsequent trade to work around the terms of that original trade.

Verse may very well become a Superstar but he will very VERY unlikely become Myles Garrett.

Would be like someone saying a young DT might become Aaron Donald.

Myles Garrett, being one of the RARE Defensive players that can be mentioned in the same exact sentence with the Great Aaron Donald.
Myles Garrett, Aaron Donald, Barry Sanders, Merlin Olsen are the only ones in same breath of each other in my opinion! Maybe Lawrence Taylor!

Verse has a long way to go to be anywhere near these guys! Maybe another 6-8 years or so.

Garrett, he is 270, but has such fluid athleticism
Yes, he has exceptional bend, extremely flexible ankle with great balance, burst and speed. from 5 star recruit to 1st overall to best in the league. So far he has only gotten better. His film is eye popping
