If that's all that's keeping you awake at night, you're a blessed man.

The older I get, the more I try to focus on the good stuff, and it works.

Hey all - more pics (as promised). Coop on his rock - thinks he's a goat.
Brought him home 4 weeks ago today. Haven't had a pup for 14 years - forgot what a handful they are. Totally worth it though.
Monday he'll be 11 weeks, and weighed 15.5 lbs. this morning, so he's gained 8 lbs since we got him. Have a feeling he'll end up around 90 - his dad was 110, so I better get him trained before he get's big enough to tell me to f'off.
Anyway - happy Friday, and enjoy the weekend.
View attachment 12618 Unfortunately we had to put down our 14 year old golden retriever Sandy. She was having problems walking and just wasn't living a full life that a dog should.
Thank you. We knew it was coming and the feeling still punched me right in the stomach. Just wasn't any easier. So sorry you and your family had to go through this. 14 years is a long time for a golden retriever but it's still damn painful to lose your friend. I've been through this many times with our dogs and it never gets any easier. Don't care what anyone else thinks or says but I hope to be reunited with all my pets one day.

My heart breaks for you and your family. That beautiful dog Sandy will be forever missed and always remembered by you and yours. 14 years is a good run for a Golden but, for me, it could never be long enough. My Golden is ten now and I can't imagine not having him around. Yeah, we all know it's coming, sooner or later. There's nothing, IMHO, that can make it any easier save for God Himself. I thought as I grew older I would be better prepared to deal with losing a pet. I couldn't have been more wrong.Thank you. We knew it was coming and the feeling still punched me right in the stomach. Yeah, me too! I'm hoping that Heaven has the greatest, never ending dog park. A place where we all can roll around in the grass and play together. So sorry you and your family had to go through this. 14 years is a long time for a golden retriever but it's still damn painful to lose your friend. Appreciate the kind words. I can always count on this site for basically anything. But yeah, we thought it would be sooner and she lived a lot longer then we thought. So I am thankful for that. Although there's always that fine line between doing the right thing by letting them go or keeping yourself happy by letting your dog possibly live in pain.My heart breaks for you and your family. The worst part of it was that I recently moved to Texas for work. So I never got to actually say goodbye. My parents constantly look for her to either feed her or let her outside. It's honestly like losing a child. So sorry to hear that Brudda.
I went through the same thing right after Thanksgiving. We still think we see Harley from time to time. He was with us for almost 16 years. It's so difficult. Our parrot still calls for him. We all miss him a lot.
It may not help you much now,,, but it does get a little easier as time goes by.
Bless
Very, very sorry to hear that. Like Selassie said, time's really the only thing that helps - that and the empathetic responses in this thread. I know it helped me.
(a story from a vet I've always liked, after the vet put his dog down)
......the little (six-year old) boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ”I know why.”
Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live.
He said, ”People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?” The Six-year-old continued,
”Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”
