Will Rams choose between Michael Brockers, Leonard Floyd?

Posted by Mike Florio on March 27, 2020, 8:17 PM EDT

The Rams are low on cap space, and they have pending deals with former Bears linebacker Leonard Floyd and nearly Ravens defensive lineman Michael Brockers. With the Floyd deal still not finalized, the Rams worked out a deal with Brockers, whose unsigned agreement with the Ravens fell through. Currently, both Floyd and Brockers are technically unsigned by the Rams, while they await physicals. Before those physicals are passed and the contracts become effective, the Rams will have to create cap space in order to fit both players onto the active roster.

It’s a loophole that has allowed the Rams to squat on both players while figuring out the best way to manage the cap and absorb the contracts. Or maybe, as some are wondering, the Floyd deal will be scrapped, now that Brockers is back, with a three-year, $31.5 million contract.

And it would be easy to avoid the Floyd deal, which pays out $10 million for one year. Rams doctors need to simply conclude that he can’t pass a physical. Also caught up in this potential mess is free-agent defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson, whose two-year, $17 million contract has not been signed.

However it plays out, the Rams are benefiting from the turbulent atmosphere engulfing normal NFL business, one that has allowed agreements in principle to be struck and to be held indefinitely in limbo until proper physicals can be administered. By the time that the COVID-19 pandemic eases to the point that physicals can occur, the Rams will either create cap space elsewhere (if players with existing contracts will agree to restructure), or the Rams will simply keep only one or two of the three players, telling Brockers and/or Floyd and/or Robinson that their deals won’t be finalized, with the failed physical providing the quick and easy “get out of jail free” card.

Therefore, like Brockers was, Christian is now back on the market

The article should be more this "Will the Rams choose Micheal Brockers or Robinson.

Rams will keep the all. I guess Gurley hasn't had his physical. If he fails it that would really change things.

I honestly can't say I'm happy about this resigning. IMO he wasn't very effective last year, but, my main concern is resigning: Ramsey, Kupp, JJ. With this additional 10m contract, I'm not sure how it can be done. I'd MUCH rather have any 3 of those then Brockers.

So let’s play that out as it’s a very real possibility. Would Gurley be too butt hurt or the Tams too worried about damage done to settle on a 1-2 year contract with minimum salary but decent incentive $$$. Just spit-balling here.

That is a can of worms the Rams don't want to see. They would still be obligated to pay Gurley's contract. I'm not sure how much an injury settlement would cost. Either way it's not good for the Rams.

So you would rather have Brockers (older) over littleton? I guess it would depend on the new defense.
As for the "against the run" comments I read on here, name a good run stopper who doesn't have a stout guy in the middle (NT) eating blockers. That's been an area of concern since they started moving Donald around and shifted Brockers to DE.

Pass coverage in general is essential these days and that's where littleton excelled.

But like I said, I guess it comes down to the type of new system they're installing.
yes the system is important. Remember how Brockers was our only real run stopper against the Falcons in McVays 1st year and once he got hurt we couldn't stop them in the playoffs? Since then it looks to me like Wade got to creative and Brockers ended up much of the time playing out of position. Also as far as Littleton, we have a lot of good DBs and our safeties are pretty good. When passing downs come up we can flood the field with DBs and because we have more DL beef we should be able to stop the long 3rd down runs that happened a lot of the time. I think Littletons loss can be replaced much easier than DL.

When Ravens signed Brockers WalterFootball gave then an A+/ When we resigned him he gave us a C.
Great example of the Sports Media over the top love & fornication with all the northeastern NFL teams.

Also a good example of Walterfootball's lack of ability to be consistent & fair.

The above would be Godzilla sized blow to the Rams Org groin area.

Big enough sealed can of worms ....like being left out in the hot sun for days .....to induce great damage to the Demoff/Snead/McVay trio future NFL resumes.

"The 2nd Gurley Contract" might end up being an entire chapter in NFL GM/HC university issues books being the best example on what not to do & to avoid @ all costs.

And yet all of us gave them a standing ovation when the extension was announced....I've invested some great IPO's and some not so good....Shit Happens!

Michael Brockers explains what happened with the Ravens in free agency

Michael Brockers’ first experience as an unrestricted free agent probably didn’t go as he planned. He landed a three-year deal worth up to $30 million from the Ravens, agreeing to terms on the first day of the legal tampering period.

His deal wasn’t signed and made official, though, as he was unable to go to Baltimore and take a physical for the team due to the coronavirus. Less than two weeks later, his contract with the Ravens fell through due to Baltimore’s concerns about his injured ankle.

Brockers quickly landed back with the Rams that same day, staying with the team that drafted him in the first round eight years ago. He got to stay in Los Angeles and the Rams kept their best run defender.

On Chris Long’s podcast, “Green Light,” Brockers spoke about his free agency experience for the first time and explained how it went.

“For me personally, I was just ready for whatever journey was coming my way,” he said. “I definitely wanted to be at home, but if I had the chance to make some more money and possibly get back to a Super Bowl, at the same time, I was going to run with that. At that time, Baltimore seemed to be the best option.

“Early on, it was definitely a bidding war. I had a lot of teams just because I can do a lot of things. But early on, it was definitely Baltimore, the Rams – because I wanted to play that 5, 4i, 5(-technique) defensive end position. Knowing Baltimore from last year and just seeing everything they had and then they added Calais Campbell and I was like, ‘Oh my god, there’s no way. This is going to be crazy.’ At that point, it was a done deal. But going through physicals, you know how that works. Being a little bit older in the league, they see a couple things.”

Brockers has a home in Houston, which is where he took a physical for the Ravens after agreeing to a deal. The results were then sent over to Baltimore’s team doctor, who forwarded his MRI and X-rays to an ankle specialist for a further look.

It was at that point that the Ravens decided to back out, fearing that Brockers would need surgery on the ankle he injured in Week 17.

“I did my physical here in Houston. I go to the doctor, they take X-rays and I did an MRI,” he said. “The doctor sent it to Baltimore and Baltimore’s doctor gets to look at it and he says, ‘You know, I’m not a specialist, but I’m going to send it to a guy that I truly trust and he’s a third-party doctor. He’ll just tell me what’s up.’ I guess that doctor told him I might need something like a surgery and they were like, ‘Oh.’

“They get my MRI, they get all this stuff. Then we don’t hear from them after that. And I guess that’s the process where they were sending MRIs to Anderson or whoever and getting his word for it.”

Brockers told Long that he doesn’t feel any ill-effects from the ankle injury, despite being frustrated about the timing of when he got hurt. He says he feels fine and has been working out this offseason.

“I feel great. I’ve been working out the whole time,” Brockers said, adding that “it worked out the way it was supposed to.”

It’s possible the Ravens used Brockers’ ankle injury as an excuse to back out of the deal, especially considering how quickly the Rams were willing to re-sign him. Brockers doesn’t seem to think it’s a concern, either, which is telling.

But regardless of how disappointing and difficult this free agency experience was, he’s happy to be back in Los Angeles.

Not all of us were standing erect applauding when Gurley got his oversized contract. If you do a search on my position on Gurley's contract you will find my comments & thoughts were Gurley "certainly had earned it carrying the Rams offense on his back for so many seasons".

A good search review on my opinion connected to what was going on two yrs ago @ that time can be summarized up in the below post on April 5th 2018. Many here @ that time did not agree with me & most likely still don't. My response was to @Merlin & the first sentence was referring the Cook trade:

I am not upset over the trade of our first round selection again but as many here has said IF we do not sign him to a long term contract I will be in a nasty foul mood. Snead has traded away eight first & second day high valued draft assets the last 3 drafts (three 1st rounders, three 2nd rounders & two 3rd rounders), for basically two players now on the roster Goff & Cooks.

Paying the price may come as early as next season too. But most fans do not want to think that far & will be fine with the gratification of the big hit this season to Hades with the future & consider such thought as negative & wet blanket stuff. Just enjoy the ride now will be the chant forward.

It could be that Snead/ Demoff/ McVay/ Wade/Barry/Kromer feel very comfortable with the upper management team/coaches & believe they are good enough to control what I see as Unsustainable.

My biggest concern is the future of Goff's OL. I need to see some serious work done here in the draft to get the groundwork done on this future OL prepared for new crop & growth of OL'ers to protect Goff & open holes for Gurley in 2019 & beyond. Right now I see non of that.

What I do see is a large cadre of star Ram players all in need of ultra massive paydays for many seasons way into the future.

$3.83m cap hit this year. Seems a good deal for us.

Thanks for posting. This is a great deal for the Rams to be able to keep Brockers at a low cost in 2020. Overall it's a good deal that the Rams aren't overly exposed in years two and three.

Curious if we let Robinson or Floyd go due to the Corona issues etc and with having Brockers back and our cap situation I can see that happening.

I think it would be a bad idea - both because they are needed and the pr would be negative, but it's always possible.
