Going in to his 3rd year he had a worse record than his predecessor, Rich Brooks.
Great point on the single SB win compared to QB's.
Speaking of Dilfer, I dont see Brian Billick's name being mentioned among "the greats" either... Lol
Yet it was Rich Brooks who was the HC who did nothing to improve The Rams win / loss record. Vermeil took over the team , and had to rebuild the team. In his 3rd year they win the SB. So my point stands.

I dont need to re-write history here, but Brooks inherited a worse team, improved it but still got fired after 2 years. Vermeil talked a big game coming in and yet his first 2 years were worse than Brooks, and fortunately for him (and us of course) he got the 3rd year. Brooks is considered one of the worst HC in Rams history, and Vermeil possibly the greatest, all because of that one magical year.

*EDIT*
Vermeil's first 2 drafts were outstanding as well and while the famous pick ups, Faulk, Warner Holt gather the headlines, there was some serious groundwork laid there
Truth was Brooks was not going to be the HC that would turn them around even with more time. He was not really a great HC anyhow at Oregon. He was decent. But he was not really an NFL coach. Vermeil though inherited the same team, and had to rebuild it. Which he did with much success.

You also fail to mention he had to rebuild the Rams when he got hired. So that is a big thing to consider that he took them from having one of the worst win / lose records to a SB Champion in only 3 seasons.
Vermeil took over a 6-10 team and went 5-11 his first year. McVay took over a 4-12 team and went 11-5 his first year. They both rebuilt teams, one just did it quicker.

Maybe you didn’t read the post.
Brooks took over a team that won only 4 games the previous season and then won 7. Which was the most wins in 6 years.
So yes, he surely did improve the record.
That said, Vermeil is far superior to Brooks, nobody saying otherwise.
Brooks is only in the conversation while comparing McVay and Vermeil.

Compare all you want.I’m a huge Sean Mcvay fan & just know he is really predictable.
I’ve liked his theory’s but not all of them .He did say something last night about taking his shots.

Whatever?? He is who he is. Just going to watch & evaluate his play calling on occasions. He knows How Bad he F”d up last night though.

1.First off these mistakes have to stop
3 pick six in a row.I told my GF that’s 3 in a row as soon as it was happening.

2.Field Goal at the end.Clock management is BAD. The Rams do this drills during training camp & I shake my head at a lot of them.

3. He is not a good chess player either. He is very predictable.Last night on the draw on 4th down was HORRIBLE.I said he better not run it.I would have keyed on that easily.

4.His first 15 plays are scripted.Nice that is great situational play calling.Against Tennessee I’m sure the pass to. Actually not sure!

5. I guess I’ll stop.Just wish Kevin O’Connell would get more say into the play calling. He seems to be struggling now under Mcvay which is not good.

The Rams really need to look at themselves in the mirror. The defense is pointing fingers a little.

That's my thing it may be unfair to do it to O'Connell now or maybe not however mcvay says he wants to put these guys in the best position and he at times isn't doing it. Other coaches have done it so why not have O'Connell play call take it off your plate let's look at things from fresh eyes. Don't let pride bring you down. We tell players sometimes to gain perspective. Let O'Connell call plays sit back and maybe look inward yourself.

I don’t hate McVay at all. Love him.

That being said, he’s got some big issues right now and can’t get out of his own way.

Pressure seems to get to him. His end of half and end of game decisions lately have been laughable.

He picked Morris and dictated the scheme. There’s no way he hired Morris and just said “here’s what I want, figure it out.” And if he did? What the fuck??

This is his ship.

"Hate" is in the eye of the beholder. I watched the game and what really bugged me was the 4th down try when you're only down 7, giving the Packers the ball on a short field like that.

IT WAS CRAZY! That ain't hate...it just ain't smart football!!!

Wanna talk about what "really bugged me"? The same play.

Not the fact we actually tried to go for it. I like guts. But I'd to see a TO taken there if the look they get isn't what is needed to virtually guarantee success. Too risky that early and in that field position to do anything otherwise.

Then it happened! The DLineman directly in front of the center moved a few feet to his right, leaving a huge gap right in front of the center. No need to call TO, just tap the center's butt for a snap and follow him straight ahead for a quick 2-3 yard gain.

Instead, we DON'T call the sneak. We DON'T call TO. We just handoff on a play that had like a 30% chance of success.

That "really bugged me".

It's funny because it was an obvious over-correction that shows McVay responds poorly to criticism, imo.
People were lighting him up for trying a fake FG instead of just going for it against the 9ers.. and he's repeatedly criticized for being too conservative on 4th downs.

It gets back to a core issue... what's McVay's football philosophy? What is the Rams offensive identity?

Yeah at the time and in the flow of the game I wasn't against the call to go for it, I was more annoyed that they didn't hand it off to Michel who could bull his way to an extra yard or two. But in hindsight whether we made it or not that was too risky of a decision in a really big game we needed to win.

Re: that gap it's a hard call to go with a sneak when you need a few yards. One yard I'm fine with. But you don't want him taking hits on his head and shit in that scrum that's also more risk than is warranted.

If you're a deep playoff team you should be able to get 3 yards on the ground when you need to. At least that's how I see it. More often than not you should convert handing it off. Bad teams can't do that because there will be DL in the backfield. But good teams do that and the only way to know is by handing the ball off and seeing if your guys can win the snap.

Again though that call at that moment in time was too risky. It was dumb I think and I know McVay realizes that now. That decision was like going all in early in a poker game vs good players when you're holding a straight and hoping for the last card.

4th down and 1 at the 50 yard line or closer - go for it every time is my philosophy.

Before the 50 - it depends on the game circumstances.

This game I wouldn't have gone for it or I would have done a QB sneak if Stafford was healthy.

I keep seeing things that state Stafford has both an elbow injury and a back injury.

I would have punted in that situation knowing that information.

I like McVay and think he is still learning and growing. He will be a great HC in the long run.

It is frustrating to see the same game plan with few tweaks though.

I have not watched the game but what I have seen and read makes it look like Morris had no clue on how to prepare for what several ROD members called out before the game. We knew what they would try and yet the team didn’t?? I’m not buying that.

7-3, they need to get to 13 wins with only 7 games left. They better have some come to Jesus moments around there or they’ll be heading to Cabo early.
Remember when. Remember back when the Rams were 7-3. Yeah…. That was aaawwwwwssssooommmee!!

Another interesting article on McVay ... I hope he is aware of this and will actually learn from it:

He really needs to bring back the Play Action Pass - you may hate Goff but he was one of the best with faking the Play Action Pass

He is a young coach. There is good and bad that comes with a young coach. Besides who would replace him?

In case anyone has forgotten McVay does a lot of things really, really well. For example:
  • McVay immediately and completely turned around the Rams' on the field performance and record.
  • He understands what it takes to create and maintain a winning program.
  • McVay has hired great assistant coaches, several of whom are now successful head coaches, and made many key player acquisitions.
  • He's a great motivator and a players' coach who makes guys want to play for him.
  • As a hands-on coach McVay shown the ability to get his players to execute at a high level of precision.
  • McVay is an excellent offensive scheme and play designer, especially in the passing game, who can scheme receivers open at an elite level.
  • He is aggressive in trying in trying to take control of games and, once he does, just doesn't lose.
Sometimes your greatest strength can be a weakness too. Maybe McVay's immediate success with Stafford lead to over reliance on the straight up downfield passing game.

Injuries to Akers, Woods, other WRs, Allen and maybe Stafford have also impacted the offense. Roster limitations and injuries have also affected the D.

Fans are frustrated at the moment and maybe more than a little bit spoiled. But we're not going to find a better head coach anytime soon. If ever.
