My wife and I attended the game. We’re season ticket holders who sit in the end zone area.
By my eyeball test, it was at least 50/50 if not 60/40 Packer/Rams fans. For comparison, the Charger game was probably 70/30 Ram/Charger fans, and the Vikings game was probably 65/35 Rams/Vikings.
It was definitely frustrating to see that many opposing fans in our stadium, but at the same time I’m not surprised one bit. Besides the “Super Sports Equinox” that everyone has mentioned, keep the following in mind:
- the Rams had been gone for 22 years. It’s great that they’re doing well now, but it will take time to get the additional hardcore fans
- there are a lot of Packer fans here in SoCal. Local packer fans had their first chance to see them here in LA since what, the early 90’s? So there’s going to be a lot of pent up demand driven by Packer fans to finally see their team. Hell, before the Rams moved back to LA and drafted Jared Goff (from my alma mater, Cal) the Packers were the closest thing I had to an NFL team for the previous 22 years because they had another Cal legend, Aaron Rodgers. It was really this game that tipped the scales for me to get season tickets this year despite the issues I’ll note below. If this game would drive someone like me to finally shell out, imagine how it is for longtime Packer fans?
It was truly bad timing for the Rams to have a game against a team with this type of national/traveling fan base on the same day as the World Series. That pretty much sealed the deal in terms of any last minute casual LA fans choosing to attend the Rams game.
- The Coliseum sucks. I said it. I went to Cal-USC games in college and I knew from experience that the stadium is antiquated, has seats with really poor viewing angles, poor setup for a modern football game, etc. This, combined with the costs of attending a game, kept me from attending games last season despite their success under McVay.
Having attended half a seasons worth of games, i still don’t think the Coliseum is a great venue and I get why people would rather watch it on TV. But for a more dedicated fan such as me and my wife, we’re willing to deal with those issues because this team is so awesome to watch. And I must say, the environment at the Vikings game was incredible - right up there with the best college football games I’ve attended. So our fan base can make even the Coliseum a great place to watch a game.
But for casual fans, the Coliseum isn’t going to be a great draw and in fact is probably a detriment in deciding whether to attend a game. That will hopefully change with the new stadium.
It definitely looks like a good number of season ticket holders sold their tickets for this game to pay off some, if not all, of their season ticket costs. We overhead a few fans talking about that during the Vikings game. I don’t begrudge them, even though it’s obviously not what I would do.
Another thing re: crowd noise. I obviously can’t speak for every Rams fan, but I think the combination of the number of Packer fans combined with the offense’s uncharacteristic struggles to start the game really stunned us. At the same time, those things really spurred the Packer fans to be even louder when they realized they had a real chance to beat one of the best teams in the NFL.
