The point still stands. This was a front office decision made months before the head coach got involved in the process.
I think the elements are there for a theory to be crafted that Snead influenced the Rams to take Simpson. But where you're going off the rails is in thinking Snead has the power to shove him down everyone's throats. Not only does he not have that level of power and influence with the Rams, but also that is not who Snead is.

Snead's a GM who flips over every rock and builds consensus on the most important decisions. And yes I am not in the room, so I don't know that for sure, but I've watched enough of his vids to where I feel comfortable saying that.

There is simply no way Snead would flex with a top pick. Zero chance. But if you end up being correct that perhaps he has manipulated this selection to happen, it will come out at some point. And from there if Simpson doesn't live up to expectation it may even drive a wedge between him and McVay.

But if that were to happen, the Rams would fire Snead. There is no chance they'd keep him over McVay if it came down to that. I love Les, think the world of him. But McVay's the rockstar here.

This is the call to Simpson. Things I noticed:

McVay is heads down in the background texting someone. When he is called up to talk to Simpson he does not look happy. We've seen the other calls to players and this is a very different vibe. Definitely something going on.

Here's some general knowledge on how teams operate with player personnel:

A General Manager (GM) can absolutely go above a head coach and draft a player the coach does not want, as GMs typically hold the final authority over personnel decisions. While most successful teams operate as a partnership, the specific power dynamic varies by franchise:

Common Power Dynamics

The GM-Centric Model: In most organizations, the GM has the final word on the roster, the draft board, and free agency. Coaches provide input and highlight needs, but the GM makes the final decision based on long-term team building.

The Head Coach-Centric Model: In rare cases, a head coach is given "roster control," effectively acting as their own GM (like Bill Belichick did with the Patriots). In this setup, the coach can override any scout or personnel executive.

McVay is the best HC in the NFL but we are not the HC model. We have been the GM model but changed to a partnership since McVay came in. However if McVay has made clear he is retiring when Stafford does, this whole thing makes perfect sense. And we have heard multiple times that McVay will retire when Stafford does. So probably some semblance of truth to that rumor.

It is certainly possible he's got an exit strategy in mind tied to Stafford. But I hope that is not true. I want another five to ten years of him running this show.

Agreed let's hope McVay was just exhausted, and he's on the same page and plans to stay post Stafford.

it could be that the McVay's posture and body language is tied to the fact that so many are criticizing the choice. Overall the outside reaction has been very negative an highly criticized. We do not have a full understanding of the context leading up to that moment. I have a hard time buying the theory that Snead would make this pick in vacuum without McVay's buy-in.

I admit I was initially disappointed upon hearing the selection but McVay an Snead have earned enough cred for me to give them the benefit of the doubt in this instance.

In 50 years of Rams fandom the one certainty is that nothing is certain. I have been wrong before in disagreeing with picks but I have also been a right few times (especially other regimes) where I did not agree with a pick and sure enough they did not work out.

Listen to what he said as well as how he said it. He emphasized that "this is still Matthew's team".

He did not want to show excitement about Simpson. He didn't want to give any impression that Simpson was the new guy to take over. He has to earn it and its Matt's team until he wants to retire. That was the message sent. They saw how Rodgers & Farve reacted to having a young replacement drafted.

They want Stafford to want to work with this kid and help him. They don't want any conflicts. So don't show any excessive love for Simpson. Sure Stafford is a vet QB and grown adult, but we all can act like jealous kids at times and they don't want that to happen.
This post is correct IMO. McVay has the best QB on earth right now at 38 years old. He seen what happened with Farve-Rodgers in Green Bay, Rodgers-Love in Green bay and Flacco-Jackson in Baltimore.
He wants none of that for the Rams.
Myself, I hope Stafford plays long enough to where Simpson has to make it to his 2nd contract to take the helm.
Lets just wait until we hear about the camp reports on Ty. If he picks it up quick and can make all the throws with his apparent escape ability we should be in good shape.
We almost won the Super Bowl(would have if not for the fucked up call) with our top pick not contributing a whole lot last year.
Relax.

Todd McShay, who called the pick, took his victory lap immediately after it was made, too.

He knew something was up due to the fit and that the Rams had done an awfully lot of work on second round WRs.

He said look for either Bama's Germie Bernard or Mississippi's De'Zhaun Stribling tonight.
I'm not a McAfee guy just to be clear.

Two thoughts:

1)Who are the two idiots at the end of the couch?
2)Should I know who the two idiots at the end of the couch are?

How is that possible if Les Snead told Ty Simpson’s father back in December that they were going to take him at 13?

Please post where you heard this because everything I looked at and heard stated that Snead was asked by the family for his opinion on if Ty was a 1st rounder before he made the decision to declare.

It was December before the 13th pick was set nor had Ty declared.

This is just you doing what you have been doing since the pick yesterday.........narrative building no matter how much you need to make up stuff to support your emotions.

At the presser, he looked like a kid who had waited all year for Christmas morning but got a lump of coal instead. Why not take an elite receiver there that puts this offense over the top - as if they weren't there already? Take another QB later on if you need one. Is Simpson much of an upgrade from Bennett who's been in the system for two years already?
They didn't lose HFA in last year's playoffs b/c of the WR room. Likewise, they didn't lose the NFCCG b/c of the WR room.

They lost b/c their secondary couldn't cover a bed. And they've addressed that already, in spades.

This pick was the embodiement of a first-world football problem. Total luxury that while maybe not everybody's top choice, was a choice that they believe they could afford to make.

Watch Chris Long's "Rich People Shit," take on the pick.

Enjoy. Make sure you watch the whole video. Especially the part at the end where he says “This is Snead’s guy”.

And the Rams knew they’d be picking somewhere mid first round. They didn’t know the exact number until the first week of January but they had a really good idea the range they’d be picking in.

What Snead said today (himself, not media people speaking for him) is the opposite of what you are dishing out. In fact, Snead said he didn't tell them he was a 1st rounder -- because there is no guarantee about that kind of thing with QBs (compared to WRs, OL, etc.).

You really are feeding yourself what you want to eat and ignoring everything else. Keep on trucking dude

Some people find a motive and think that is somehow evidence. There is no evidence supporting the idea that Les shoved this pick in. Even if some people find potential motive that he wanted to help a friend.

I’m afraid you are wrong my friend. Snead told Simpson’s father they were going to take him with the 13th pick back in December. Do you think Sean McVay had done any draft prep at that point? Do you think he’d watched a single throw on his tape? No. No way in hell.

This was 1000% Snead’s pick. Did McVay eventually get on board? Sure. But the notion that it was McVay that led the charge for this pick is LAUGHABLE. Snead’s had his mind made up on this guy for 5 months.

You’re trolling right?

I mean I just read through this thread and there is no way some of the people in here aren’t being purposely dense lol

Yes, and there's this guy named Vrabel that, from his own mouth, said there was nothing inappropriate going on.

Anybody can say anything to run cover for a situation.

We will never know the full truth...and that's fine.

The job of the GM is to think long-term and do what's best for the team long-term.

A coach wants good players right now to coach right now.

That doesn't mean there isn't overlap.

But Snead has the final say. It doesn't mean he shoved the pick down McVay's throat.
Yes, I believe that in general they have a similar vision and work well together. But in the end, Snead has final say. Yes, Snead would get fired before McVay, and McVay is a rock star. But they each have their own responsibilities.

Do you and your wife always agree? When you don't, but you get your way, does your wife look happy or is she giving you the McVay look?

Exactly
