And what exactly did that have to do with coaching? Let's not pontificate.

Again, the premise for this thread was that McVay didn't have the players ready to play. The idea that McVay let Goff slack it or not get ready for the game is a bit ridiculous.

Yeah - I think THESE coaches are indeed smarter than everyone on the internet. To think that McVay somehow didn't read what the defense was giving them as well as people on the internet while our team is 11-1 is plain silly after a 14 point away WIN.

Come on man. When people say things like McVay didn't have the team ready or the "honeymoon is over" when talking about a coach that took our team from 4-12 to two straight division titles they are indeed being foolish. We are 11-1 and took the division earlier than any other team this season.

It's not about dissention or about people being critical. It's about acting like the coach can't coach or that the fanatic or coach B could call better plays and ready the players better after a 14 point win that also resulted in our winning the division. There's not a team out there that couldn't play better on any given Sunday.

There is a vent thread AFTER LOSSES for this kind of crap. And no. That's not what this site is about. This site was started as a venue to get away from those constantly carping about everything and finding negativity in whatever they can point to. We are a site where homer is a tag worn with pride. It doesn't mean we are blind. It means we were all pretty much tired of the sites where everyone took more pride in pointing out the negative.

Everyone could see that Goff was off and that certain plays were not working as designed. The lions played well and stopped a lot of plays and we STILL scored 30. So the coach didn't get the team ready or doesn't know how to call a game?

After a win, most of us who moderate and came of here from the beginning shake our heads at the people looking to find ways to be negative. It's actually a pretty simple concept.

Nice hyperbole on the Ramstalk reference.

And no we don't usually have a vent thread. We have had one vent thread all season. Care to guess why that is? It's no accident or oversight.

Right there you are disproving the gist of this thread.

We have possibly the best coach in football right now and he's only into his second season of ever being a head coach. Of course he is going to have some areas to work on. But fans can be as fanatical as they want. If they are bagging on this coach or acting like they saw and knew plays and set ups that would have made this game a blow out, I'm going to call them on it.

This is a site that is generally positive. Being negative after a win is accepted to a point but not going to go unchallenged. Get used to it and get over it.

I’ll never get used to belittling people when it’s not necessary, especially when you really don’t know who you are talking to. There’s better ways to disagree.

McVay has been great for the Rams. He is not perfect but, has made the Rams the team with the best record in the NFL after 12 games. I have no problem second guessing him for a discussion sake. IIRC the the graphic during the game showed the Rams at only 59%...found it here at 58% TD scoring in the red zone.

https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/red-zone-scoring-pct

That ranks 18th in the league. The Rams struggled there last year too. So there is room for improvement. I hope McVay can figure out some way to increase the TD percentage in the red zone.

The red zone struggles could be why he likes to go deep a lot. Sometimes I wonder why he takes deep shots when the Rams are starting to put drives together. It's great when they connect and not so great when they don't.

So what about this week?

Goff was off. (Could have been under the weather)
Lions pass rush had a good push up the middle where Goff likes to step up. Outside rush too.
McVay still uses timeouts early.
Lions onside kick helped the Rams. Would have worked with a better kick.
Lions TE had wide open areas.
Rams got a little lucky that the LIons didn't get an INT on those short pass plays late.
AD comes through.
Gurley and offensive line take control late.
Defense made some good stops

Conclusion
Rams win in a kinda ugly fashion. Give the Lions and Matt Patricia some credit. They have a solid defensive line that gave the Rams offensive line all it could handle. This week's evaluation starts with Goff being off. Had he been himself the Rams put up a bigger lead early.

4:00 Minute mark start the play where Goff gets a headshot.

At the risk of upsetting a Mod, who I respect very much... I agree with @Elmgrovegnome .

It wasn't that a couple members had differing opinions and were pretty adamant about their positions that surprised me. Although I don't see too much of that here.

It was the backlash by more than a few members against those opinions... borderline personal attacks and some biting sarcasm thrown in for good measure.

When Jeff Fisher was hired, I had a differing opinion from the get-go. The board I belonged to allowed a group of members to needle me at will. Sarcasm was used, personal attacks... but, mainly, "piling on".

When you get bombarded for your opinion, because others don't agree with it, that's abuse IMO.

And I didn't think that was what this board was about. At all.

I saw many posts in this thread that responded without sarcasm or insult... just said how they were positive about McVay and the team and "things happen".

There's always room for improvement... including ROD. Like my mama used to say: If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.

Or, kill the thread... it's always an option.

I love this place and I am very optimistic about the team and staff. But I'm not going to attack someone who holds a differing opinion. I was on that side... and it is NOT fun.
(just an fyi... I was pretty much dead right about my opinion on Fisher ;))

The gist of this thread is that McVay had 2 WEEKS to get ready for the Lions and just about laid an egg. The Rams found a way to win simply because they had much more talent.
This game easily could have been a horrible loss with not so nice playoff consequences.
Him calling back to back short passes where the Lions D waited for them made me ill.
That said, there is no other coach in the NFL I would rather have by a long shot. He is young and very smart. He will learn from this.
After a bye a team like the Rams should crush a team like the Lions.
10-1 is still the best record in the NFL. Its good to be spoiled.........finally.

So belittling a take is not acceptable. Got it. With what I'm seeing, I will reserve that right when it comes to people second guessing THIS coach on play calling and getting the team ready to play after a win.

Again... we are 11-1. How many coaches have gotten their team to that record while already capturing their division? Zero. It's utterly ridiculous to make these kinds of assertions in light of our winning ways.

I have zero problem with people bringing up poor play and even some of the play calling or usage of timeouts, etc... But general statements being made like the honeymoon is over or that he didn't somehow get the players ready will bring a huge eye roll from me. Even in our worst moments, we are playing like one of the best if not THE best teams in the entire league it comes to the whole game.

It's like the GDT when we have a bad series and people lose their shit. I will continue to comment on that too. And yeah, I'm sure people will know who made the point that I am railing against. But I never went after a particular member but went after their premise that they went with. We have a great team that is winning and sometimes players don't execute, coaches have a good game plan against us, our coach will think he sees wrinkles or areas the opposing defense or offense won't be able to stop. Sometimes he will be wrong. More often than any other coach in the league, he has been right. No fans in the league can really say that to the extent of Rams fans with this organization at this point in time. Perspective is a great thing. Sometimes some should take a breath and think about where we have and could be with another coaching staff and front office. And sometimes finding the negative is folly.

But it wasn't (a horrible loss). It was a 14 point win. And, yes, because there is a lot talent on all three phases of the game. The best teams have off days... a lot of times, they lose. The very best teams have off days and still win.

That said, there is no other coach in the NFL I would rather have by a long shot. He is young and very smart. He will learn from this.
He will (learn)... but it might take some time. Based on what I'm seeing, he only needs a few lessons... unlike 75% of the coaches out there, who need to go back to High School (or maybe Middle School for their offensive game plans  Remember those days?)

After a bye a team like the Rams should crush a team like the Lions.
This is the NFL. "On any given Sunday". DAL just beat NO. NE lost to DET (and JAX). Games don't always pan out as they "should".

10-1 is still the best record in the NFL. Its good to be spoiled.........finally.
Ya think? I'm pretty sure you feel the same way I do... that drought was waaaay too long. Great to bathe in the waters of success! This "should" be fun... enjoy the ride, my man!

I differ in that we have seen "dream teams" eat it. It's not just about talent. It's about putting your team in a position to win - even when it looks to the fan to be ugly. Running the ball in those instances were far from a guaranteed success. For as much success as Gurley had, the formations, situations, and personnel that we have no way of seeing are something second guessing a successful coach. They stopped the run many times. But this team is built and coached to take advantage of what the coach sees.

This site is different and always has been due to our focus more on the positive than finding ways to point out the negative. That has always been our focus and will continue to be so.

It's totally fair game to question certain play calls - always has been. But when you start calling out a coach that has taken us to this level as if he needs to learn what a fan knows, it is going to be met with - yes - often sarcasm.

And sorry but no team in the era of leveling the playing field crushes every team - including "bad" teams every week. No team looks like world beaters every week. I agree that we should have crushed the lions on paper. But the actual game dictates a different story line. We were playing an away game in a very noisy dome stadium. We were playing against a team that tends to show up for big games but loses some stinkers. How many times have we seen that with our Rams with different coaches. With this coach, we're winning most of those games. McVay has won more games in his short stint as head coach than I think any other coach in history.

Hell - even in the ATL game when he was seemingly outcoached for much of the game, we had a chance to win. I frankly don't recall a game under his coaching where it looked like we had no chance. For Pete's sake, NO lost to Dallas. Is Dallas a better team than NO or our Rams? Did Payton not get his players ready? Did he call a shitty game? No. Dallas simply outplayed NO and had a good game plan. It happens and if we watched every team every week, there would be more reason to second guess moves made by their coaches than what we have seen with McVay.

Short memory. Goff nearly three three bad interceptions. He wasn't very accurate all day. The game actually could have been lost. Momentum is a fiscal mistress.

Ah, the NFL coaches are smarter than everyone else argument. Jeff Fisher says hi, and thanks because he wants back in.

There you go making a sensible reply about what really happened. Don't you know that your just supposed to try to make the dissenters look foolish by being sarcastic on this thread?

Ah BS.

No one has issue with criticism. What a red herring filled to the gills with crap.

The issue is with spoiled, over the top statements like "the honeymoon is over".

Funny, our D balled out against a Detroit team that beat the Patriots and we still found a way to score 30 pts, something many teams have yet to do all season. Why? McVay or Wade magic overflowing from the prayers and adulation of the Rams Pollyanna fan base?

No. Simply put, AD is AD, Suh had a little extra to play for and Talib was back which had a significant effect on the D. Also, Troy Hill had a really great game.

All of these things (including Troy Hill improving) have been discussed as what needed to happen and IT DID.

So, of course, it's fair game to be critical... I mean Barron's play lately has been atrocious and I don't think anyone is saying otherwise.

But Good Gravy Gerty!!! People losing their minds about our D when the issues were known is just soooo...incongruous with our season, last season and our history over the last two decades...

Goff being under the weather seems like a logic explanation. Seems like he would never be as bad as he was unless something was wrong. I thought he didn't look right when on the sidelines on one camera shot.

Yeah, he seriously looked like he needed some NyQuil and a day in bed.

I've never seen him slack-jawed like that.

And if he was ill (cold or flu), then I'm even MORE amazed.

Last few colds I had I literally couldn't get out of bed. Granted, they all seem to turn into Pneumonia now, but still. Any football player who can suit up with a cold or flu is a freaking gladiator in my book.

I can’t believe our coach has only gotten us to 11-1. You can throttle every team in the league if you only have your players ready to play. Every play will work and no defense can stop anything you do. Man our coach sucks. I’m tired of sugar coating it. The honeymoon is over. He’s into his second whole year as a head coach and doesn’t know everything. What in THE hell is taking him so long. FFS! I mean we could have lost this game if we didn’t win it by 14. 30 points? What the freak is that? You should be able to do that in your sleep in this league. The experiment is over. McVay needs to either get his crap together or we need to move on.

That about cover it or did I miss some form of idiocy in there somewhere? Lovely thread. Glad everyone feels better for it.

I think most of us if not all of us on this board love our coach. With that being said at one time or another during game threads plenty of fans have stated some differences with play calling etc. that's what fans do we are critics or in some cases overly critical lol. I personally love our coach but there have been times where I want to light my hair on fire with certain play calls etc. This week it was goff who got the brunt of the concern, it's only people venting and or being concerned but occasionally we need to relax lol but lets not forget "fans" is short for "fanatics". Sometimes for me and it may not come across this way on the board as it may look like I'm angry or picking but in essence it's just being overly worried and wanting to win so so badly . Hate to compare it to this but I think anyone with common sense will understand what I mean ....it's almost like having a child obviously a different level but you just want the best for them cause you love them and sometimes expect perfection and then as a parent you need to step back and chill and accept some of there imperfections and hope they succeed lol. Same thing with the Rams so sometimes the venting/picking is only coming from being passionate and or worried. Basically I love the Rams as much as my kids!!!

At the risk of upsetting a Mod, who I respect very much... I agree with @Elmgrovegnome .
You will rarely upset a mod by disagreeing with what we say on the open forum unless it is our outright telling a member what he cannot post. I'm good with people not liking how I approached this thread. I may not agree - but so? Where you MIGHT run astray is when we get on a member directly for what we view as violating the terms and conditions of the site. I would suggest in that case, you do so via PM. I get what you are saying and sometimes we won't handle things in the best way imaginable. But I'm not going to sit back and let a thread or take go unchallenged if I feel the desire or need.

Don't agree with me? Fair game. I will give my take and not use my "position" against you for it.

I will say however, that if the group running this site find you are constantly being negative or always finding the negative as the premier point of your posts, we will often watch your posts as it is not what this site is all about.

It was the backlash by more than a few members against those opinions... borderline personal attacks and some biting sarcasm thrown in for good measure.

I get it. And I will say that while my response was sarcastic toward the gist of the thread and a couple members' takes, if you are going to gripe after a win, you probably should expect that here. Nothing new there.

And I didn't think that was what this board was about. At all.
Actually, this site has always been about a positive perspective whenever possible. So that actually IS what this board has always been about.

did i just read that mcvay has just led the rams to back to back 11 win seasons for the first time in rams history. as in it's never been done before. as in they've been playing for 80 years and this is the first time they've won 11+ games in consecutive seasons.

and people want to complain about a call here or there? fuck that.

A coach is not entirely responsible for having a team motivated.

It is human nature to have a let down after a big win or to be looking ahead to a big game the following week.

McVay has proven nothing short of being a genius.. so it does seem silly to criticize him too much.

That being said the Mods here have a tough job - they try to keep the board from becoming an overly negative experience (and I've seen boards with no moderation and what they become is usually ugly).

But yeah to criticize certain people - id call it the holy triumvirate of gurley, Goff, McVay, anyone is taking a pretty big risk in criticizing any of those three, that is if they don't want backlash.

But honestly whatevs... I"m gonna say what I'm gonna say and not worry about too much who likes it or not.

I get that... now, I've never once entered the GDT... so, put that aside. But, all my other observances of your responses to opposing views was that they were logical, with little-to-no emotional content. In other words, I've never seen you that sarcastic... and I haven't noticed dog-piling quite like that before... maybe I've just managed to miss those kind of threads.
I don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill here... just my observation (and, apparently, Elms).

I don't think any of the dissenting members fit that description?

if you are going to gripe after a win, you probably should expect that here.
Why? In any game, there are things that any one of us can point out as needing improvement. It's all in the delivery, however... and the delivery was lacking here.

We all have a choice when we read a post and disagree. And the decision becomes harder when we don't like the way the opinion was delivered.

But, what I really enjoyed when I joined (compared to the other board and some similar boards I see out there) is that, when an opinion is thrown out there and delivered poorly, it's usually met with one of three things:
* Replies that are civil and don't escalate the original opinion/delivery
* No replies (even better)
* Thread shut down

It's a testament to the mods and members here that I have never felt compelled to broach this subject since I joined... 4 and a half years ago.

Over and out....

Coaches can prepare the team, make all the right play calls, etc., but it ultimately comes down to execution by the players. IMO, it appeared the offense (primarily) wasn't always on the same page which happens to all teams good or bad. We've seen it with the defense plenty this year, yet when either side of the ball struggles, some might place the blame on coaches for not having the team prepared. This team has been through a bunch of off-field stuff (shootings & fires), over the past few weeks, reaching out to aid their communities. We are in the 13th week of the regular season, and I'm sure some of these guys are starting to get wore down and fighting through both the mental and physical part of the game. We have to remember these guys have plenty on their plate everyday, both football and non-football related, and are going to have an "off-day" every once in awhile. I'm confident it was an anomaly and we will see a different offense Sunday Night against the Bears. Let's celebrate being 11-1, NFC West Champions, for the second year in a row, and are staring at a deep playoff run (hopefully resulting in a SB win.)

I tend to stay away from the GDT myself. Too much knee jerk reaction going on for my tastes. I tend to be pretty sarcastic at times - especially when it comes to threads or posts like what I've seen here.

I don't think any of the dissenting members fit that description?
I honestly haven't checked. If someone were to use terms like "McVay sucks" or "Goff is a bust" I certainly would. But as it was, I just have a real problem with these kinds of gripes after a win - especially with what I (and many of us) have seen over decades of watching Rams football.

And yeah - I'm pretty much done with this thread. Cheers man.

If anyone knows about this it's me (we don't really need to rehash the 2016 post-draft and preseason). Thing is, I had a choice and rather than be contrarian to the culture of the board, I simply extricated myself.

Being right wasn't the issue.

And it's not about mob (or mod) rule. It's about understanding that this is a voluntary community.

It didn't matter that I KNEW that 2016 was going to be a disaster. The point was that the board didn't want to hear it on a daily basis and/or provide a venue for me being what amounted to an extreme contrarian.

Right or wrong isn't the issue.

Also, there's PLENTY of criticism of the Rams, the coaching (surely you've read some of the posts on Coach Wade), the players and the FO.

This just isn't the place for over the top negativity. There is a difference between critique and negativity.

Critique is welcomed here. Negativity? Not so much.

And let's not pretend that there's no difference or that the parse is difficult.

Personally, I'm embracing the example of Mr Rogers (mostly) and Dave (RIP) for this extraordinary season. I don't expect anyone else to follow suit. That said, especially after nearly 2 decades of really miserable football, this probably isn't the forum to be about the whole "we're good, but we also suck" thing.

God Bless all and Horns UP!

Yeah in 1999 we lost to the Lions despite us being the ones with the tackle-eligible TD. Then later blew it alowing a conversion of a 4th and 26th. Not this time though... we end with a defensive pick!

Anyway I've seen this before with good Rams teams since the mid-70s... there's always going to be a few games where they play well enough to win.

I was at that game. The only game I saw live in that magical year, and it was that one.

I was bitter and hateful for a long time about that.

Freak it. I'm still bitter and hateful about it.

I'm only sure of one thing: that game wasn't McVay's fault either.
