I gave a few examples - not just Jimmy G.
You’re making false assumptions. I do think McVay could field a competitive team without Stafford. How competitive and what additions is the question. What additions would be stronger than the subtraction of Stafford? I don’t see it and I certainly don’t see it in the time frame of that in which we could have Stafford.
Darnold and Goff certainly crapped the bed when given the opportunity and pretty stacked teams. So what QB and additions would put us in even an equal position as we’re in with Stafford and the additions we’re certain to make even if we increase Stafford's contract? We’re probably not getting a top tier receiver in FA. We’re not getting a difference maker at RB in FA and probably have about as good of a chance in the draft at both positions as well as TE even if we keep Stafford.
Bottom line is that I view keeping Stafford and making some minor improvements giving McVay or any coach a better chance at the SB. Bringing in a different QB sets us back IMO.
Trying to go up in the draft to grab a rookie QB? Who? When? ‘25? ‘26? Is trading Stafford going to put us in position toze grab that Franchise rookie? Possibly. Odds are against it though. We’d have to package up our first next year and whatever 1st we’d get via Stafford trade plus to move up in ‘26 likely. We’re not getting him in this draft unless we plan to sit him behind a QB that simply makes us “competitive “.
Hell. Maybe your direction is better. I just don’t see it that way.
Regardless of the number of examples, my point remains.
Anyway there's more than one way to win. They could build up the defense by finally spending money at LB, adding a good CB, and another pass rusher into the rotation. They could obtain a QB who may not have Stafford's arm, but could offset some of that with his legs and by spreading the ball around more than he does. Someone who actually prefers play-action. They could get creative and select a rookie talent at another position that provides the team a creative Wildcat package option they could mix things up with which probably wouldn't happen with Stafford as he wouldn't want to lose any snaps.
Whatever they do until they prove to be incompetent, I just trust McSnead to come up with the additions necessary to compete. And it's possible that those additions along with the potential players not lost by giving Stafford a huge deal could overall be stronger than the subtraction of Stafford.
On a side note, I still believe that if Stafford were willing to restructure his contract a couple years back, Baker Mayfield would be the starting QB for the Rams and on a cheaper deal.
