Taking the big hit now and not having a much bigger one in future years when the team will be trying to sign it's young talent.

Exactly.

We have a DL of 4 young studs, and if their trajectory continues, we should want to give all of them a 2nd contract and have the Fearsome Foursome Mk II for the next decade.

Ok. To me, a 45M dead cap hit sounds like something you'd do for a player ya want to get rid of, not one ya really want to keep.

And I get wanting to pay Kobie and BY and Puka and Avila and our 2024 hits too... but an elite QB is so rare.... still wish we'd overpay MS and get it over with!

Damn, finally caught up on this thread, again. Can we just give 9 a $10M raise and add a year on his contract with some guarantees? Cap is going up again by 2027 I’m sure.

One more note about this Jourdan interview.

She reminds us of how the last stalemate ended, in 2024, on the very day training camp was set to start. Stafford's agent and the Rams had been having a "tough negotiation" for months and months and months and never resolved anything. Finally, on the first day of camp, Stafford and McVay met in a room and talked over things (presumably with Pastoors and Sexton etc. available by videoconference as needed). Finally, McVay and Stafford set the parameters for the "band aid" deal that allowed Stafford to get a slight raise for 2024 along with the understanding they'd return to the negotiating table the following off-season. They emerged from the meeting after a 3-hour delay and Stafford signed his deal and was in camp.

My take: this story makes me wonder if that's how this saga will end as well, at the very last and final stage. McVay and Stafford face-to.-face in a room with the FINAL say. And with McVay caving a bit and agreeing to overpay.
Once this news came out, McVay stated that he wants this wrapped up ASAP. I took that as them not allowing it to drag on. It was his message to Stafford that if it’s not settled quickly they will trade him.
I could see that. That future pick is quite appealing to me because next year's QB class has far more potential. I'd love to have trade-up ammo.
The Vikings had two first round picks in a draft loaded with QBs. (10 & 17). That was not to get them into the top 5. I doubt a second round pick and a late first moves the needle when it comes to moving up for a QB.

This, the conundrum of finding so so many young studs in one draft. It’s difficult to sign them all in the same year.

It's about future hits in 26'& 27'. Same goes for dumping Kupp now. It's about clearing the deck for 26' & 27'.

Stafford has shown he doesn't honor his contract though. He's already renegotiated it once. And conveniently those negotiating for him in the press are not mentioning the huge sums he has been advanced already.

All the people who were like "will y'all calm down with the offseason fake news" are now on pins and needles with the rest of us lol

If Stafford isn’t ready to sign a four year deal with a new team, then it doesn’t even make sense for us to trade him.
Who’s going to give up high picks for a 1-2 year rental?

Getting a mid round pick and taking an upside down cap hit, shouldn’t even be an option.
I could see a team who is reasonably a QB away from a title....Minnesota for example.
Outside of that, it makes no sense.

The problem seems to be Stafford looks at the now money and the Rams look at the cap.
Yeah, true.
I understand both sides of that coin.
I can't imagine taking more money (when someone has made approaching $400 M....before commercials) and going to a bad team with little chance of competing.
But, at some point, all jobs are about money.

Raiders have the second highest cap space and the third most draft capital. It's the only team that could give Stafford buckets of money and still offer the Rams big picks.

They aren't a total train wreck. Decent o line. Elite TE's. Need a RB and WR1. They were competitive against AFC West opponents with Aiden O'Connell last season.

Recent management and coaching moves look like adult decisions. I could see Stafford talking himself into it for the money on the theory that they are positioned for a turnaround.
their o-line is terrible had like 24th most Sacks allowed in the nfl - and thats with two somewhat mobile QBS

... they do not have a good roster overall.

I wonder how honest teams have to be with competing organizations. Like if the raiders settled on 40 mil per year would they have to be honest about that number with the rams?
