What if Goff doesn't shit the bed against Miami, the Jets, San Francisco at least once? 13-3 and 1st round bye? AD ans Kupp doesn't get hurt in a wild card game? The team isn't beat up from that game...all of a sudden no team looms large on the horizon...

Inconsistent play is the mark of someone who doesn't prepare correctly.

Does Goff have talent? Undoubtedly.

Does Goff put in what it takes to see that talent truly realized?

No.

Stafford is everything Goff is not.

Stafford is just as capable of shitting the bed. He's older and a little less prone to it because of his experience (unsurprisingly, this is what happens with pocket passers as they age; they are less prone to being fooled by defenses and having bad games), but he's very much capable of doing the same thing. I'll never forget the guy going out a few years ago and throwing 4 picks in Week 1 against the shitty Jets while having a top OL and one of the most gifted groups of WRs in the NFL:

The fact that we have to discuss hypothetical scenarios where injuries that happened IRL didn't happen to convince ourselves that Stafford might have taken this team farther isn't a good thing. If you don't think Stafford could have beaten the Packers under our circumstances this year in the playoffs, he's not the sort of upgrade we needed.

They are absolutely paying the 22.5 mill. Its dead cap money that has already been paid to Goff that automatically accelerates. And at the moment they are paying Stafford 9.5 mill salary and will pay his 10 mill roster bonus

Nope. Check link in previous post.

Next up Rams announcing signing Blythe to a 5 year 75 Million dollar contract.
I'm a Hawkeye fan, and love having my Hawkeyes on the roster, but please, no, no more Blythe. Not even sure Kirk Ferentz could fix him again.

Sosa K is ignoring the huge o-line issues they had in 2019 where Jared was sacked or hit before his receivers got 10 yds. Frankly it's a dumb comparison. This year, McVay went to a dink and dunk offense and didn't take as many shots downfield. When you compare Stafford and Goff in 2020 there isn't a huge difference.

IMO the clear difference is simply in Stafford's experience and because of it his ability to make his own reads and audibles. Why wasn't Goff better at it? Sorry guys but that's on McVay and his so called QB coach.

Respectfully disagree man. The stats just back up what you see when you watch the film. Stafford has always thrown the ball down the field. Goff prefers more short to intermediate routes. Their arm talent isn't in the same class either so I think that plays a part.

I dont understand where this helps the cap this year. Goff still hits for 22 mill, Stafford another 10 mill

staffort will either restructure, or more likely I think, get an extension for a 3rd or 4th year with a reduced salary/cap hit this coming year.

may be enough to help us keep Floyd.

If anyone wants to feel better about the trade, here's the most upvoted comment on a new post on the 49ers reddit page:

"Honestly this is unbelievable. To let him go to a division rival. We can’t even throw the entirety of the fucking field with Jimmy. We have the worst quarterback in the division. Playing scared and being prudent cost us the SB and when he’s hurt again next year it’s going to be the same shit. I love Kyle and John, but we arent getting better at the most important position while other teams are and it’s honestly disheartening a bit."
I'm sure the New Orleans fans are also wondering which way they're going to go. Being in limbo on that sucks man. Glad we got resolved el quicko even if the direction was a surprise. I'm now looking forward to saying (I hope) that I underestimated Stafford when he rocks this league in 2021.

Yes it did. The Lions took ALL of Goff's contract including the guarantees.

The Rams have ZERO dead cap money due to Goff now.

Normally, teams don't do this. The Texans did this with Osweiler and the Rams did this with Goff...
That's a big deal right there.

You can't do that.

Yes they did. Spotrac is updated (they getting hammered right now, for obvious reasons). Includes the Goff trade and Stafford's salary.

That's an error by Spotrac. They'll correct it soon. You can't take dead cap that another team has already paid (the lone exception is an expansion draft).

It is crazy to me how the Rams cannot keep a long term QB.
The position has generally been a circus forever.....
Got Everett to develop happy feet.
Dumped Warner.
Bulger imploded.
Drafted a lemon in Bradford.
Now Goff traded.
Rewind 18 months and there is no way the Goff isn’t breaking every Rams career passing records.
This surely needs to signal a long time commitment to McVay as the HC.
Has to or we are likely headed back to football hell.
McVay inherited Goff so who knows his thoughts on his from day one as HC.
But look on the bright side, the Rams have such a storied history of bringing in aging Vet QB's like Joe Namath, Bert Jones, Dan Pastorini, Steve Bartkowski, Dieter Brock, Steve Bono...
Oh, wait a minute....

That's empirically not true.

Until the Rams rework Stafford's contract, they have $20 million on the books for Stafford and $22 million on the books for Goff. It's a net loss of about $8 million. Spotrac isn't correct. We have to eat Goff's dead money. Detroit cannot take it in a trade.

One tweet said they take the dead money from the Rams in 2022, not 2021

His salary counts, but ZERO of Goff's salary counts.

The Lions took our Dead Cap hit.

That's gonna take time for folks to absorb...

But we knew that no matter where he was traded. The dead cap from the signing bonus still sticks so that's $22.5m this season.

Chris “where did I park” Miller and Chris “made of glass” Chandler.
The worst to me was Foles though.
God I hated that trade.

I initially read it as the Rams paid Goff this year and the Lions paid for Stafford this year.

So we stay right where we were for 2021, but can extend him for cap relief this year and have more for the next two.
