They are saying it and they are right. I am a big Goff fan-homegrown, good character and had success while he was here but he’s not a $35M a year guy and that’s the problem.

Look at Mahomes this year. Lost 2 lineman to Covid beginning of year and 2 to injury after that. So basically 4 new lineman all year and they were ranked in Top 5 and KC went 14-2. Now, did that line play great because they were top picks? Had time to gel? Hell no-Mahomes and his ability in the pocket is what made that line “look” like they played great. THAT’S what a $35M a year QB does. Think guys like Brady, Manning, Rodgers and Brees have always had great lines? C’mon.

The issue with Goff is that he does nothing to give the OL a break. If anything his poor pocket presence makes the line look worst than it is. I get Blythe leaves something to be desired but his erratic play isn’t why Goff is so bad. And what has Goff ever done to adjust to the pressure he knows he’s going to get up the middle? Nothing. Still can’t figure out how to maneuver to his left or right and step up in the pocket-frustrating.

Hate to see Goff go but it was the right move. In year 5 if your QB is still being “spoon fed” than how is he supposed to make others around him better? He can’t. And at $35M a year you can’t have that type of QB on your roster.
If you are going to use Mahomes as your bar for a Rams QB then good luck in finding a comparable talent.

We just got a guy who couldn't overcome his surroundings for a decade.

Brady was given up for dead last yr. Many claimed he showed his age. His arm was dead, etc..

$35M a year had to go
I like a good fantasy.

I know athletes never take less money but I think an exception should be (it’s not) an NFL quarterback.

A really good QB on a really good team has a great life. Even better in a big city.

Imagine ... this is the fantasy part ... Goff signs for an average of $22-24M per year, instead of the $33-34M he got.

He’s not the highest-paid QB, which he was for a short time, but he’s not the best QB in the NFL either.

Media is not on his ass as over-paid, putting the team in a challenging cap situation. Just the opposite. Goff’s praised for being a team-guy, all about winning. The Rams can do more to hold onto or add talent because they have more cap space.

The Rams’ talent is better, and that helps Goff perform better, and less under a microscope for criticism. Now QBs will always be criticized if their teams struggle. I am saying “less”, not “none”.

Now people will argue an athlete ‘can’t leave $ on the table’ and I agree.

Except for an NFL QB.

A QB on a quality team, especially in a big city, has tremendous opportunities to cash in off-the-field.

It’s kind of what Brady did throughout much of his career. And I think Tom Brady is fucking-evil.

Goff should have signed for less. It would have benefited the Rams; and THAT would have benefited Goff.

I didn’t just give you Mahomes. I gave you Brady, Manning, Rodgers and Brees. There were many years those guys didn’t have great OLs but the one thing you noticed is that when they got pressure up the middle they know how to navigate and step up in the pocket. Goff just goes down. It’s like his shoelaces are tied together the way be navigates the pocket.

As for Stafford the guy never had a great coach, never had a running game and was part of an organization that didn’t make winning a priority and was notorious for keeping executives/coaches in jobs even though they were terrible. I’m not automatically checking the box and saying we are going to win the Super Bowl now that he’s here but I will say that we have definitely improved the QB position by acquiring Stafford. Really looking forward to next year and seeing what else we do in the off season.

Well respected and a leader. And players know we're onto something special
Yep. Very exciting!
Man if they can get anyone of Marvin Jones, Kenny Galloday, Chris Godwin, Juju, or Allen Robinson that would really make this O second level.
Not sure we could pull that off.. but at least a damn deep threat!

Aim high, swing low. Can't fault Detroit for asking.

Speaking for myself, i don't think i'd trade AD for Stafford even if we were getting their 1st rd picks. I've seen what our D looks like without AD. The Packers did whatever they wanted and the Rams were schematically unable to take anything away from them.

It's actually a little scary how important AD is to the fundamental ability of our defense to function properly.

If Stafford was as good as Peyton Manning in his prime, or a young Aaron Rodgers or something, then I would make that trade. But he's not at that level.

But we kind need Donald if we are gonna win it all, he will be a big part of it.

Man, Holmes is an idiot.

Or not. Imo Holmes will rebuild Detroit with the same approach the Rams used for identifying college talent, except that with Detroit he will have more and better draft picks to work with. I personally thought he was a great hire for their GM.

Carolina’s offer seems pretty good. Hard to pass on that 2021 first rounder. A nice low one, too. Not sure I would have.

It would seem to indicate Detroit prefers Goff and not a strong pick of the college QB’s. That might have been said already.

They would have had #8 plus their own #7. Damn horsepower there to grab a top QB. You don’t get many swings at that, 2 picks under 10.

Great comment!

Holmes was not only in the key organizational position for the Rams for college scouting and drafting, he was "in the room" for all of the Rams' drafting successes and failures over the last several years. He knows what happened and where the bodies are buried.

Holmes' trade for Goff shows that not everyone from the Rams' organization agrees with the conventional wisdom on this forum that Goff is a failure who was responsible for holding back the offense from some presumed higher level of performance.

Oh, so you are still looking at generational talent.

BTW, How did Rodgers navigate pressure last yr against the Niners and this yr vs the Bucs?

If Rodgers is so awesome, why did he play in the same number of SBs as Goff in nearly three times as many seasons?

Obviously the supporting cast matters.

Few QB's excel with pressure, especially pressure up the gut, which was the Rams issue. Its one thing to step up in the pocket from outside pressure, it's another getting it right up in your grill like the Rams have had issues with.

Even Brady, with the greatest talent he had played with, struggled when the Giants pressured him consistently between the tackle's with their "NASCAR pass rush" package that Spags implemented in that SB.
