You could very well be right. He might have looked confused because that might have been a blown assignment by someone else.
What confuses me about that tho is NRC, JJ, and Joyner are all vets at this point. Two of them being seasoned vets. It's hard for me to believe that they would make that glaring of a mistake. I also think if they were making mistakes like that Wade would bench them.
The weirdest part is Brees throws the ball to Thomas 80% of the time. That's right, 80%. That's not a made up stat. Why would we be bracketing their slot WR when we know where the ball is going?
You point out some good things here and it's something we should all look at. If Peters is expecting help over the top or for Thomas to be bracketed and he's not. I can see why he would be confused and not set.
Good Catch.
Since I posted that I saw someone actually brought this play up with McVay at one of the conferences, or maybe it was an interview, and he stated that this was the intended coverage. So I guess no player was at fault aside from Peters simply being beat. But like you said, the bigger question is why would Thomas have single, man coverage when it's almost guaranteed Brees will go to him while doubling up the slot with no safety support? Have to put that one 50/50 on Peters and Wade I suppose. Either way, it needs fixed.
