It would not surprise me if Natrez Patrick moves back to his natural ILB'er position over Young.

I'm excited for Kiser to finally get a shot and can hopefully stay healthy. But Patrick is a guy that gets lost in the mix I think and agree that I'd love to see them give him a go at ILB. He showed some great instincts and ability in the limited time we saw him last (pre)season. And the NFL isn't suspending players for pot anymore so that is good for him since his college career was often derailed due to misdemeanor possession lol... just buy that stuff legally boy.

Here is an interview about nothing really with Kiser. Had never heard him talk, sounds like he's got a good head on his shoulders at least. Hopefully injury bug is behind him.

If I had to get real money, I'd get against Kiser at this point. By the 2121 season the Rams linebacker corps will look completely different than it does this summer.
In a 101 years I bet the Rams linebacker corps will look completely different.

IMO Kiser is expected to win the starting MIKE position. Unlike Littleton, Kiser has the speed to match up with TE's and RB. Cory was extremely limited in coverage and was strictly a zone coverage LB. If he stays healthy I expect him to be Cory's replacement. Young, Reeder and Howard are also fast LBs so now they have the speed in the LB corps they have lacked and was exposed the last couple of years.

Right now I see the competition would be Reeder and Kiser at MIKE with Young and Howard competing for the MO position. What I like about those 4 players is that they all run well, and no matter who is starting the Rams are going to have a fast LB unit. Ebukam as the SAM runs a 4.5 with the others running in the 4.6 range.

Right now I would expect the starters to be

WIL Floyd
SAM Ebukam
MO Young
MIKE Kiser

What makes me shake my head is the re-signing of Michael Brockers. He's too slow to play DE. To give you some comparison, as rookies Whitworth timed at 5.1, Zuerlein timed at 4.7 and Brockers timed at a astondingly slow 5.36 as a rookie. Watching him play he's probably running a 5.5 now which is extremely slow for an edge player. He doesn't have an explosive first step and relies upon a straight bull rush to win. His sacks and pressures were setup by AD and Fowler. He's strictly an inside defender.

The staff and organization like Micah Kiser. We have at least 3, maybe 4 (if Natrez Patrick moves back to ILB) other ILBs. I see us as having a solid young crop of players there. Reeder played well as an undrafted rookie last year, Howard played well when given a chance, Kenny Young has some some promise in the league. Again, I hope that Natrez Patrick gets a real shot at ILB because I think he has a real skill set that could let to him being a real playmaker at that position for us.

Do we have any idea what Staley thinks about him?

What we do know is that the last we saw of Kiser last preseason he had a mediocre - not horrendous, but not actually inspiring - performance, then missed the whole season with an injury. He has yet to play one snap in the regular season on defense, in two seasons. Staley didn't draft him, and was brought in to make changes. Maybe Kiser wins a spot, but it is FAR too early to even guarantee he'll make the team, much less to act as some are doing that he has the inside chance to be the starter. Maybe he will be - but he has to earn it. I doubt they hand it to him, like they tried to do last season.

Snead recently complimented Kiser in a manner that was almost over the top.

“From a conscientiousness standpoint, whatever you’re rating in – I don’t know if ‘Madden’ can give a perfect score – but in conscientiousness and saying, ‘Hey, I’m going to be one of the best linebackers in the Rams organization, I do know this: His vision to be that, the conscientiousness matches that,” Snead said. “I don’t know if there’s been a day he’s missed here. Buy stock in Micah Kiser. Don’t want to interfere with his relationships, but if you have a daughter, see if you can somehow set them up because you just want to buy stock in that man.”

You are correct in saying that Staley didn't draft him, and he has yet to actually earn and compete at a starting position in the NFL. But I will say that there really isn't any reason for a GM to compliment a player in such a way, particularly on the eve of losing a player like Littleton, unless said player isn't thought highly of by the organization. '

I'd think that Kiser would be in competition with Reeder for snaps. I could also see situations where you'd have both of them on the field at the same time. I like bigger ILBs myself, and would like to see a couple of thumpers like that on the field at the same time.

I'd say you have Reeder and Kiser competing for one spot..... and then Travin Howard, Kenny Young, and Natrez Patrick for the other ILB spot.

should be an interesting competition .

I think Polite getting a chance may push Patrick back to ILB. Having those 2 guys can really be a major for us if they can live up to the great potential both had in college a couple of years ago.

.

i'm excited to see the young guys compete for the starters role. although not sure how the coaches will be able to determine if they're good enough, seeing there's no otas and maybe even training camp.

This is my take on the OLB unit. For what its worth:

SOLB- Ebukam/ Lawler/ Holland
MLB- Kiser/ Reeder/ Patrick
WILB- Howard/ Young/ DRAFT PICK
WOLB - Okoronkwo/ Floyd/ Polite

I can see the 6-2/242 Jachai Polite as a pass rushing specialist for Staley behind new addition Floyd. I see Eubukam/Okoronkwo as the starters on the outside & Howard/Kiser on the inside. This is not a great draft year for your team to have a big need for 34 D edge rusher.

The interior 2020 draft propects is slightly better though. With the Rams having seven youthful OLB/ER's on the roster currently really helps Snead out on Friday & Saturday draft selections. He is not in a position with both his two LB'ing units where he should be forced to over reach in drafting any.

Snead/McVay have selected five of the above LB'ers over the last 3 drafts & it's time to get some use out of those draft investments & see some pay off in dividends. (y):)

Since that time 10 veterans LB's ...Mark Barron/ Alex Ogletree/ Clay Matthews/ Dante Fowler/ Bryce Hager/ Conner Barwin/ Cory littleton/ Robert Quinn/ Ramik Wilson & Matt Lonacre have came & went.

That’s as good a take as any, Bonifay.

As an aside, I see both Patrick and Young as potential wild cards. Emphasis potential, but I’ve got a good feeling about both pleasantly surprising this year. Call it a hunch. Lol.

Polite has a lot of flags on him and he will have to earn a spot. His attitude, work ethic and commitment are definitely in question. He's the kind of player you keep on the PS until he polishes his play and earns a spot to compete by showing good work ethic and commitment. Remember besides his attitude issues, he showed up to way overweight, and out of shape, the same with his Pro Day. Are you kidding me?!! Also Polite is an OLB in this defense.

I can see how they might platoon the ILBs rotating them in and out to keep them fresh. On early downs I can see Reeder at MIKE with Howard at MO. When they go to their passing sub package I can see Kiser at MIKE and Young at MO. If the Rams continue to rotate their players frequently, there really won't be much of a distinction between the so called starters and the rotational guys who should see significant playing time. I really feel these 4 guys give the Rams a good ILB unit.

They signed Floyd as a cheaper Fowler replacement. Floyd is slightly slower in terms of long speed compared to Fowler, but he might have a more explosive first step than Fowler. He also has exceptional bend for his length and good quickness and was highly thought of as a draft prospect. He validated his first round pick in his rookie with a 7 sack season. But his production fell off after that finishing with a total of 18.5 sacks over 4 seasons. Staley watched him for 2 years during his time in Chicago. IMO Floyd is Staley's choice for replacing Fowler. IMOl Floyd has the talent and the physical metrics to be a very good edge rusher. Now he's going to be playing with AD and I expect Leonard will enjoy the same jump in production as Dante did. Floyd has the talent to be a 9+ sack per year type of player. He's also more versatile than Fowler as he has the ability to drop into coverage allowing Ebukam the blitz opportunity.

I think it was a huge mistake in basically extending Brockers even at a discount. All it's going to do is retard the development of Okoronkwo. They did the same thing when they signed Clay Mathews to play in front of a proven Ebukam. That proved to be a big mistake.

IMO overall I think the Rams improved their front 7 this year. I like the addition of Robinson over SJD as an early down run stuffer. Unless they draft someone to play behind AD I could very easily see Gaines in that role. Gaines is your classic one gap DT who's game is penetration who can play both 1T and 3T. I think Floyd gives them as dangerous of an edge rusher as they had in Fowler. Remember that Fowler also graded out a marginal edge rusher when he was with the Jags. The improved secondary they have is going to pay dividends up front. OC's won't know in advance what scheme the Rams will be playing if they decide to pass. With Phillips it was almost always zone because Phillips lacked the LB's to play man. Staley now has those LBs. This could be a top 10 unit with the talent they have.

I don't know how much man coverage Staley will play with his LBers but, I think he likes to at least mix it up. I think Patrick may lack the speed to cover in man. At his pro day he ran around a 4.85 forty yard dash. He could be OK in zone coverage as he is tall at 6'3". In preseason he seemed to lack closing speed when he got through on his pass rush. He looked good at pass rushing.

Patrick was happy with his broad jump, saying he improved from a jump from around 9 feet, 4 inches to around 9-10, but 15 reps on the 225 bench press and a 40 time somewhere in the 4.85 range likely didn’t open too many scouts’ eyes.

It's true that he didn't put up the pro day numbers he could have. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that the off-the-field issues that limited his participation at Georgia didn't have him in the optimal shape when the time came. Which I think really helped us because people honestly weren't hot after him as an UDFA.
