Insurance provides homeowners with financial security, and it is their first line of defense when tragedy strikes. The California DOI must focus on increasing insurers’ appetite to operate in the state. This will increase competition and broaden the risk pool, giving consumers more options at a lower cost.

It always pisses me off to see poor management in anything, but govt in particular makes me rage. Particularly when that poor management ranges from poor preparation (which is a primary job of those who lead) to actually driving insurance out.

These companies know what they're doing. They have to be able to manage their risk and they have the stats over time and they also do a ton of research to project shit. If you set them up where they can't manage that risk then the loser is the average citizen, who already has enough fucking bullshit on their plate. I don't like them any more than anyone else, and a lot of them are shady as fuck. But they're a necessary evil.

Hope the govt can help make up some of the shortfall for the people who have lost their homes or more. Particularly the ones who were not insured. There's no words for how terrible this is man.

And we had no choice. The county demanded that we did so.

Not taking any sides or discounting anything anyone has said on the insurance thing.
I think Jourdan’s favorite saying, “many things can be true at the same time” may apply.

If the DOI had allowed the insurers to raise rates before the cancellations… I think we would’ve heard a lot of… “politicians are just taking money from the big insurers.. they don’t care about the people.”

Who cares about the people? I won’t go into all the things government there pisses money away on but if I were king, I’d filter sea water. desalinate it even and store it in water towers for fire use only. We can do better than no water to fight fire for an entire town. At least retain some storm run off. Insurance sucks everywhere.

Didn't they leave the reservoir low intentionally for some reason? I guess they weren't betting on such a fire. Although maybe they should have of if it hasn't rained for 3 months after having record falls a year or two before which grew all the vegetation.

Desalination is expensive and uses a shit-ton of energy. It's good that we can do it.. and may be forced to do it much more in the future.. but it ain't great right now. Maybe if we start building nuke plants as we need to.. it will be cheaper. I understand there's a way to combine the energy production and desalination.
Also.. from what I've read.. and I've read multiple places... water storage was at capacity. It was a system demand issue.. killing pressure to the higher elevations. And the failures, from what I've read, came after hours of firefighting.

In case I've missed a firm decision, it seems almost certain to me that they will play in Az..No advantage that I can see.. Looking forward to it, for sure..Only decent news (though it doesn't come into play) is that Jimmy G looked pretty damned good to me, if needed

There are a lot of questions to be answered.
Is this a thing where they rotate reservoir maintenance? Is it scheduled for off-Fire season?
One thing I feel is underplayed is we’re talking about a historic wind/fire event…. In January.
 
I have little insight as to how this went down - however, critical thinking and analysis is something I manage to do on occassion - sort of a derivative from troubleshooting both mundane and complex network issues.

I am sure that everyone in Palisades is not a billionaire - but, with the rising cost of fire insurance, this seems like an idea worthy of serious consideration. These folks built a couple of pools on the property, pre-staged some generators, planned ahead with real fire hoses and sprinklers, etc... and kept thier own home from becoming an ash pile, while most everything around them is now cinders. :crying:

Certainly this is worth a look.

Israel, which is mostly desert, generates so much fresh water with their desalination plants that it's incredible. They offer the knowledge/technical know how, free to surrounding countries. California should fly them out to show them how to do it successfully. Unfortunately, there is a lot of open coast line with which to situate one or two.

Kudos to those teams. I especially appreciate the Vikings offer, given that we're playing them. Doesn't make me want to pound them into the dust any less, but I might feel a little bad if we do.

Not to poke fun… but there’s no reason to think more water would have significant impact.

Have lived through and learned from two massive fires here.

Also… notice.. there’s no talk of lack of water in Altadena.

Drought & hurricane force winds.. you’re fucked if a fire starts.

Now.. how the fires started is the big question.

Won’t be surprised if one or more started in encampments. But that’s pure speculation
