Assuming both are healthy - the positive impact of JJohnson is much greater than for Reeder. It allows greater flexibility for the entire DB corp.

This is a tough one for me because I like Johnson better ... not a fan of Reeder ... but fell like there is better depth at Safety, with Curl, Lake, Kinchens and McCollough. Don't see depth behind Rozeboom and Speights.

John Johnson. They’d be absolute idiots to activate Troy. They need to drive Troy WAY out to the woods, walk him out a few feet, and then get back in the car and drive off never looking back. Besides. Nothing… NOTHING! Good has every come from a guy named Troy. He can’t shed blocks or tackle.

Johnson. Yes they have more depth at safety, but they're also playing their safeties more. If any of the 4 go down you'd have to find someone to fill that void, at ILB you still have Hummel, Hoecht occasionally, you can bring up Neal, or even a FA in a pinch.

Snaps from last week:
SAFETY
Lake-100%
Curl-100%
Kinchens-54%
McCollough-38%

LINEBACKER
Rozeboom-64%
Speights-55%
Hummel-5%

Yeah I bet they keep Reeder. Not the answer we probably want to hear but honestly it's smart because we have zero depth at LB

I wouldnt bring back either one right now. Lets see what the next 2 weeks brings before we burn the final return on a player that isnt going to see much playing time. As soon as they bring one of those guys back a starter will go down and will not be eligible for IR and return. If no injuries the next 2 weeks then bring back whichever one would see the field the most.

They have enough depth. Currently losing a safety affects how the defense is operating. 3 weeks ago they barely used a 2nd LB. Speights and Hummel played a combined 12 snaps(15%), while all 4 safeties played at least 50%. Since all 4 are playing, you'd need to have someone fill that void.

I guess that's true. They have a 21 day window right?

I think once they activate the 21 day window that burns the last spot, but I could be wrong, its happened once or twice.
Yes, in order to return to practice and open the 21 day window they need to have been designated to return.

Playoff teams get an additional 2 designations. So even if a starter goes down they can still potentially get them back.

So when are they required to make a decision by?

As far as I know, a player put on IR during the season can be designated anytime after the required 4 week minimum. Once a player is designated they are cleared to practice and the 21 day window begins.

If a player is put on IR at the start of the season the team must either designate them to return, like Murch, or put them on IR for the entire season.

Chicken or egg?

Are they playing the safeties more because Reeder is out? The increase in safety snaps did dramatically increase around the time Reeder went down.

JJ3 might have a little more to offer as far as experience for the youngsters so he perhaps might be the best asset. Right now in the absence of Reeder, Boom/Speights/Hummels are holding it down just fine. Reeder might be the odd man out.
