Even with his skill set and my belief that safeties are sorely underrated right now, that is a kings ransom to pay for one, when a good safety can be had in the 5 million range and no draft picks given, jmo.

Meh it's CBS so I doubt that's accurate plus what draft picks do we have to trade :)
Maybe they were just trying to raise the price for the Seahawks IF there is any truth to it.

Maybe they offered players and a lesser pick. Maybe JJ and Havenstein or Everett and a future 1? Or maybe all 3 and a #1, as it would clear cap room and from that perspective it would have been doable.

Rams emerge winners of Seahawks trade for Adams

In a surprising turn of events today, the LA Rams division rival Seattle Seahawks managed to pull off a blockbuster trade with the New York Jets for their All-Pro safety Jamal Adams. Not just any trade mind you, but the type of trade that proves the Seahawks are going all-in this year to win it all while they still have a window of opportunity. While we’ll just stick a pin in that discussion of winning it all, let’s mention the NFL teams in the LA Rams field of vision who are impacted by this move, Shall we?

Of course, there are the division rival Seattle Seahawks. There are the New York Jets, a 2020 schedule opponent. Of course, there are the LA Rams themselves, a team fighting hard to retake the NFC West division crown. In fact, the possibility of adding Adams to the Rams roster was mentioned and ignored this season. And then there are the defending NFC West Champions, the San Francisco 49ers, a team in need of safety help and was very much linked via NFL rumors to Jamal Adams. Okay, we’ve lined up the teams impacted directly or indirectly by this move. So how does this play out from the Rams perspective?

Jets move to the future

For starters, let’s address the obvious. With the move, any uncertainty over the Rams’ ability to defeat the Jets this season is over. Kaput. Finito. The Jets are bagging the 2020 season and are looking to get better tomorrow. While that doesn’t truly surprise anyone, it does create a better post-draft situation for the Rams than before the blockbuster trade went down.

The Jets parted with arguably one of the best NFL safeties in the game today, and the return from that trade is the value embedded in the 2021 and 2022 NFL Drafts. Yes, the Jets are a weaker team from this trade.

Now let’s consider another team, the NFC rival San Francisco 49ers.

49ers face much stiffer competition

The San Francisco 49ers rose from ashes to the top of the mountain in 2019, primarily thanks to the pass-catching ability of tight-end Geoge Kittle and the running ability of their running back by committee approach. Teams that placed eight-in-the-box to defend the run were demolished by Kittle in the passing game. Teams that focused on defending Kittle in the passing game were demolished by the 49ers running game. By adding Adams, the Seattle Seahawks can defend both Kittle and the 49ers running game. The Seahawks had no answer for Kittle in 2019, when he hauled in 7-7 for 86 yards, plus rushed for another seven yards to propel the 49ers to victory. The only loss for the 49ers was an overtime loss to the Seahawks when Kittle was unable to play. With Adams, the Seahawks will be able to win games vs. the 49ers with Kittle on the field.

Let’s not forget that the San Francisco 49ers were once hotly rumored to be close to a deal to acquire Adams themselves. That deal, while collapsing the 49ers chances down the road, almost certainly would have made them a solid odds-on favorite to win it all this year. They are sorely lacking elite safety play, and Adams is incredible in both pass and run defense. The deal did not occur, the 49ers remain weak at safety, and as a result, the Rams benefit once more. Now, about the Seattle Seahawks...

Are Seahawks too little too late?

Yes, it has already begun. In one trade, the hype machine driving the Seattle Seahawks to Super Bowl LV as the NFC Champion has already begun in force. Yes, All-Pro Jamal Adams is good, elite good. But I’m not convinced that his presence on that Seattle Seahawks defense is a huge upgrade. Certainly, not an instant pass to the Super Bowl, do not play games, do not collect experience playing together. Was the defense the problem last year? In a word, yes. The Seahawks 26th ranked defense was only better than that of the Arizona Cardinals last year, while their offense was nearly as good as the Rams, falling just seven yards behind the Rams. While the Seahawks worked hard to address that defense in free agency, they have parted ways with Jadaveon Clowney, Ezekiel Ansah, Mychal Kendricks, Quinten Jefferson, and Nazair Jones.

But their offensive line is where they were hit hard in free agency, losing tackle George Fant, guard D.J. Fluker, and tackle Germain Ifedi to free agency. Some see Adams as a huge upgrade over last year. But realistically, part of adding him merely compensates for the loss of Clowney, who was a true unsung hero of that defense last year. Meanwhile, the Seahawks transition on both offense and defense to new faces will be very complicated due to such a short “how do you do” period this year. For a team aiming to win it all, they’ve chosen a really bad year to abandon continuity and roll the dice on a complete roster makeover. Will it pan out? I don’t think it translates into nearly as many wins as so many are throwing at the Seahawks right now. In fact, this may merely ensure that the team does not fall below .500. In the end, the big winners of this blockbuster trade in 2020? The LA Rams.

Pete Carroll knows what he wants on his defense and does a good job finding it. And Adams is a straight badass. That dude is going to do well in Seattle, so I'm not gonna knock this until I see him playing in the scheme.

They'll pay him btw. That's what you do when you give up that much.

If so, would involve a return player... right? No way we’d have the draft capital.
As I mentioned you could conceivably offer Johnson, Havenstein, Everett and a pick.

The fact that two are in their last yr makes that deal shaky to say the least, but you are giving them plug & play pieces for Darnold and a very good young safety. Meanwhile it saves cap room for this yr for the Rams.

Another thought could be Van Jefferson, plus some of those players above. Rumors were the Jets were taking him with their #2 that came right after the Rams pick. Remember his Dad is their WR coach. They ended up taking Mims with their pick.

Just throwing out ideas on how they could have offered up a decent deal.

Hate to say it because I can’t stand Seattle but in my opinion this is a great deal for them. With the Covid situation and uncertainty and limitations around college football I would put more of a premium around acquiring great proven players rather than draft picks in this environment.

Going to be tough to evaluate college players this year and it may even ripple through longer than that in regards to a players development in college depending on how much practice and playing time is affected.

Having said that-I still think they are the 3rd best team in the division.

Then we’d be starring at Ramsey, Kupp, and Adams all needing deals... the cap uncertainty,... and a cupboard lacking draft picks.

If we were involved, is it possible Kupp or Ramsey were part of the discussion? :hiding:

I'd counter with he doesn't actually. In the last 3 years they've spent a 2nd and two 3rd round picks drafting safeties. If those had worked out and he did a good job of finding what he needed this trade never happens. Petey and Schneider have built a reputation off 1 draft and taking Wilson in the 3rd round aside from that they do not draft well. It's funny that most 12tards are happy with the trade for adding Adams and so they won't have to sit thru the team shitting the bed in the next 2 first rounds of the draft.

That's way too much to invest in the Safety position. Way TOO MUCH.

And now they're gonna have to pay him TOO MUCH too.

Good. Fuck them.

This trade excites me. Their Defense is not even close to being able to stop a competent offense. So they have the M in BooM. He can’t play every position and is going to be a huge hit to their cap space for years. Plus, wouldn’t it be nice if we could make a trade with the Jets and get one or both of those 1st rounders from them?(ok my last line was a pipe dream)

Comparing the Jamal Adams trade to Rams' Jalen Ramsey deal

In a span of less than a year, two All-Pro defensive backs were traded into the NFC West. First, it was Jalen Ramsey, who the Rams acquired from the Jaguars before the trade deadline last season. Then, the Seahawks struck a deal with the Jets for disgruntled star Jamal Adams on Saturday, bolstering a secondary that has been looking for a stud safety since Earl Thomas’ departure last offseason.

Trades have become much more common in the NFL lately, especially deals involving stars like Ramsey and Adams. They’re on a growing list of big-name players to be dealt – a list that also includes Odell Beckham Jr., DeForest Buckner, Amari Cooper and Khalil Mack.

The Ramsey and Adams trades are especially similar in several ways, which we’re going to break down here. The biggest difference, however, is that Ramsey plays what’s considered a premier position at corner, while Adams is a safety – albeit, an elite one who does everything well.

That’s not to say Adams isn’t as valuable as Ramsey, but current contracts in the NFL certainly show that teams prioritize corners more than they do safeties.

Situation with former team

Before Ramsey and Adams were traded, they each pushed to be dealt by the Jaguars and Jets, respectively. Ramsey was unhappy with the Jaguars’ reluctance to sign him to a long-term extension, and a rift with Tom Coughlin stemming from voluntary workouts created tension between him and the organization.

He made it clear that he wasn’t going to give the Jaguars any sort of discount with his next contract and wanted to be one of the highest-paid players at his position. Jacksonville was unwilling to sign him to an extension, as was the case with other players such as Yannick Ngakoue and Dante Fowler Jr.

Adams’ issues with the Jets were much more public, especially after he blasted Adam Gase and GM Joe Douglas in an interview with the New York Daily News last week. He asked to be traded because the Jets weren’t prioritizing his contract and didn’t make their long-term plans clear to him.

Trade compensation

Jalen Ramsey

Rams trade:
2020 1st-round pick
2021 1st-round pick
2021 4th-round pick

Jaguars trade:
Jalen Ramsey

Jamal Adams

Seahawks trade:
S Bradley McDougald
2021 1st-round pick
2021 3rd-round pick
2022 1st-round pick

Jets trade:
Jamal Adams
2022 4th-round pick

Contract status

Ramsey was traded to the Rams mid-season, so he had one and a half years left on his contract. He’ll play the 2020 season on the fifth-year option, which means he’ll be a free agent after this season if the Rams don’t sign him to an extension beforehand. He vowed not to hold out this summer even if he doesn’t get a new contract, but all bets are off in 2021.

Adams currently has two years left on his rookie deal, which includes the fifth-year option in 2021. So the Jets will get an extra half-season out of Adams before he becomes a free agent than the Rams got with Ramsey. That’s not a huge difference, of course, but it does factor into the compensation.

Ramsey’s contract will be tougher to sort out because of the pricey cornerback market. Darius Slay and Byron Jones both set the bar much higher this offseason with contracts worth more than $16 million per year. Right now, the highest-paid safety (Eddie Jackson) makes $14.6 million per year, a number Adams is sure to eclipse. However, he won’t approach $20 million per year like Ramsey could.

Player accolades

Ramsey and Adams are both studs and two of the best defensive backs in the NFL. Ramsey is a three-time Pro Bowler and one-time All-Pro, while Adams has made the Pro Bowl twice and been named a first-team All-Pro once.

Ramsey has 243 career tackles, 10 interceptions, three forced fumbles and 49 passes defensed in four seasons. Adams, on the other hand, has 273 tackles, two interceptions, six forced fumbles and 25 passes defensed. He also has 12 career sacks.

As Rich Cimini of ESPN pointed out, Adams and Ramsey are two of only three All-Pros to change teams before turning 25.

I could see Kupp because they might figure paying big money to a WR is not worth it in this offense because McVay will get the most out of all of their WRs. They did make it to the SB without Kupp. Of course they only scored 3 pts in the SB without Kupp

Sure but who bats a thousand at GM. The job they did the other year after jettisoning vets and finishing a quick rebuild was fantastic IMO.

Not sure Adams is the greatest guy in the locker room but Seattle loves them some shitty dudes and I'll be surprised if he's not a beast in that system.

SEA fans widely do not like this trade.

The best justification I read was "we can't draft anyways. May as well..." :ROFLMAO:

Rams were in on Adams?? WTF?

So the correct wonderful always truthful & paragons of virtue national sport news professionals (cough, coughing expectorate materials) say so ...would this indicate Snead is not happy with the drafting of their two safeties too.....Burgess & Fuller?

Snead has always had his big issues full of disappointing prospects being able to find strong safeties to fill his final rosters .......
Taylor Rapp
John Johnson III
Marqui Christian
Mark Barron
T.J. McDonald
Rodney McLeod
Darian Stewart

......plus Snead & the Rams has massive amounts of cap funds today & for the foreseeing future to spend on a strong safety like Adams

Rapp is a better SS so why would the Rams need Adams? They have Burgess with better coverage skills and better speed than Adams to play FS
