I agree that coverage shouldn't have been called.

But when you see the play before, you can understand his thinking. Their prevent D gave up a wide open WR that Carr overthrew by 10 yards, but he was WIDE OPEN in the end zone. Williams must know these newbies were prone to mixing up the coverage, so just have them keep the WRs in front of them while the entire D makes it impossible for Carr to get a throw off.

Unfortunately Carr somehow had a ton of time to throw, and DB somehow BITES on a short route with no safety. There's only so much you can do as a coach. This was the Jets being the Jets.

All that said, Williams is a dickwad.
Great points. And so Williams made a bad call. I've seen McVay make bad play calls too. Williams took a high risk gamble and lost. It happens. I don't see how Jets management can fire Williams and keep Gase.

And yes, water is wet, Fire is hot. And Williams is a dickwad.

The Jets are trying to "tank respectfully".

They have to keep up the narrative that their lack of success is due to having no talent so that they can attract T-Law (instead of yknow, them being inept AND not having talent).

So when they lose due to a obviously awful coaching gaffe, they have to cut bait to save face in front of the NY Media and Lawrence. They're trying to disguise the fact that mediocrity is accepted in their organization.

Jets rushed seven, with three in man coverage on three receivers.

That’s ten defenders.

The 11th?

The eleventh defender was a spy. A SPY!

There’s no reason to have a spy on that play. Jets essentially played with ten defenders on that play.

Just a horrendous call.

I know that's where our minds go, but watching the pressers with these guys and their deep depression, there is no way in the world anyone is telling them "Hey, let your guy go, we need that pick NEXT YEAR". Never. Never. Never.
100% agree.
That's why I said for a moment. It was so bad it looked intentional. And I look at a guy like Sam Darnold, you know damn well he wants to win a couple games so they dont draft a QB and he gets another chance

I really like that the Jets took decisive action instead of trying to bullshit the fans and players. First right thing they've done in a long time.
I'd like to agree here, but the fact that they wont fire the coach who has been an embarrassment to the organization speaks volumes.
The media stuck covering them, and the fans deserve better. Look at Houston and Atlanta, both franchises got a spark after relieving their HC

You are on to something here. Seriously.

He blitzed 8 guys. The ONLY reason you would do that in that particular situation is if you are PURPOSELY trying to give the game away. I honestly thought that was exactly what they were doing there. They made sure to continue to lose. They basically gave that game away on purpose with that call.

The firing surprised me because of me believing that they lost on purpose. NOW... Your post connects the dots perfectly. I get it now. LOL

The Jets know that theres alot riding on Lawrence going there.

And there stands a good chance that he refuses to play for them. For good reason.

If he refuses to go there or he does go there...and either gets hurt or busts....and Joe Burrow is never the same?

I could very well see the NFL start to restructure things to not reward these dumpster fire franchises.

With more and more cord cutting....and with the Elite Generation of QBS aging out, the NFL has to keep their product hot to keep the networks in a bidding war. Especially in the AFC who struggle with exciting teams and energized fanbases.

If I was a betting man, I'd bet Adam Gase has, at maximum, four more games left as head coach of the Jets.

Ummm... can you tell me how this would happen exactly?
  • GW is told "Hey, call the risky blitz. It'll be great". (by whom exactly)
  • Defense just "Does what they're told". (this part I get)
  • Team fires GW for being so stupid to call that
So GW doesn't say a word? First, by the MF that told him to call it, nor after he's fired for doing what he's told?

This dog won't hunt.

If you could find odds on it, I'd say the moneyline be in the area of -1,000,000

I think he's joking along the lines of what I was saying. The defense plan was so bad that you'd have to be trying to lose to call that.
There's no way Gase would intentionally lose, he's trying to save his job, as is the GM and all the coaches.

I feel like I’ve seen him do this back in STL before.

he's done it everywhere. i remember him letting the whiners with alex smith at qb drive 80 yards down the field twice for tds in the last 2 mins of a playoff game, mainly due to his blitzing. the saints fired him the next day.

as for the rams he did the exact same thing against the whiners with 20 secs left in the first half. zero blitz, at the whiners 20 yard line of all places, and krapondick lofts one over jenkin's head into the waiting arms of a wr who runs the rest of the way for a td.

there were plenty more examples.

Easily the worst call I've seen this year. You have to have safety help on a guy as fast as Ruggs is, and Lamar Jackson (the corner) was left out to dry.

That loss is all on Williams, and he was deservedly fired for it.

Gase has been fired for weeks now. He knows it The Jets know it. No way they keep him.

Theyre only keeping him around so that some interim HC doesnt try to win games ala Raheem Morris. They are committed to the Tank.

I think these guys are happy to have had jobs as long as they did. Gase and Williams shouldve been fired.

But he's going to need another job after he gets fired, and no coach wants 0-16 on his record. No coach wants to be a part of that history. The GM is also on the fence, also doesnt want any part of 0-16
They suck like nobody else, but no way did they lose on purpose

The talking heads are saying Gase didn't realize what D GW had on the field until someone yelled in his headset. Gase didn't have the opportunity to call TO before the snap.
