Former Ram’s coach, Gregg Williams, sees the “next Aaron Donald” on Jets roster

Los Angeles Rams superstar Aaron Donald is one of the top defenders in the NFL today. His two Defensive Player of the Year awards serve as a testament to this. For New York Jets coach Gregg Williams, who served as Donald’s defensive coordinator during their stint together with the St. Louis Rams some years ago, he believes that he may have already unearthed the second coming of Donald.

Williams told Peter Botte of the New York Times that he sees Quinnen Williams possibly emerging as the next Aaron Donald:

“Quinnen is way ahead of Aaron in a lot of different categories. He’s ahead of him, and I love teasing Aaron about that every once in a while when we have our chats. They’re different players, they play the same position, but they’re different athletes on how they go about doing their responsibility.”

Based on what Quinnen has done so far, his coach does not appear to be off on his assessment. Quinnen may not be on the same level as Donald right now, but there’s no denying that the 22-year-old could be well on his way.

Williams then could not help but take a quick stroll down memory lane as he heaped praise on Donald. He also clapped back at critics who called him out for selecting the former Pittsburgh standout as the 13th overall pick in 2014.

“Quinnen is a big man. But Aaron can still get after it with making you believe you’re going to be blocking air, because he’s gonna jump you, he’s gonna spin you, he’s gonna do a lot of different things that way. The other thing, too, I laugh, I smile, and I haven’t forgotten, there was a lot of criticism that came my way when we drafted this short guy, Aaron Donald, as high as we did. But he’s turned out to be a pretty good player.”

Williams clearly has some experience when it comes to untapping the potential of his players. Only time will tell if Quinnen can live up to the lofty expectations.

sorry Williams, you did not find the "next" Aaron Donald. There IS no other Aaron Donald and it's not fair to put that on this William's kid. Donald came into the league as a phenom and that was independent of you.

STFU Williams... You had nothing to do with the drafting or development of AD. What an attention seeker.....

Gregg's stock just went down in my eyes. Again.
I'm sure Quinnen is a special D-line player. Maybe he is, maybe he isn't... because it's kinda dumb that this beat writer posted absolutely 0 stats to support Gregg's case. No PFF's, no TFL's, etc. Nada.
Regardless, there's lots of "special" D-line players in the league right now. AD99 is NOT a "special" player, he's a "generational" player. Of all the players to ever play his position, we really can't say who has been "better" than AD99. He is incomparable.

That's not what GW said.

They’re different players, they play the same position, but they’re different athletes on how they go about doing their responsibility.

------------------------------------

“Remember back in the days when you guys were asking me about [Quinnen Williams] and I said you just have to wait?” Gregg Williams said after practice Friday in Florham Park. “He does some things, it’s not like Aaron Donald when I had him, but there’s some things that you just shake your head and say, ‘Wow.’ ”

Reading the actual article (link) from the New York Post, not the Times, GW never says "next Aaron Donald" and while Rod-Bot uses quotes in the title, that's not a GW quote and the crap Clutch Blog doesn't use quotes in the title -- maybe Clutch edited the title after this thread started or w/e.

That's not what GW said.

He said Williams was "way" ahead of Donald in "a lot of ways". What ways are those, I'm curious, because Gregg couldn't be bothered to name one.

First two seasons
Donald 50 QB hits
Williams 16

Donald 40 TFLs
Williams 12

Donald 20 sacks
Williams 7.5

All I remember is Brian Schottenheimer saying Aaron Donald will be a pro bowl player in this league, in Donald's very first training camp. I did not hear GW say that. Lol

I just want to know what Williams sees in this guy, like a scouting report. He is someone to look at when subjected to the Jets being on TV. AD does not have to worry about anyone else. It's always a compliment to be compared to the great AD.

Aaron Donald is the best defensive player in the league and the best DT by a wide margin which we can all agree but who is the 2nd best DT? Every position in football has a top 3 but Donald is pretty much a top 1 because you never really hear about any other DT's. Khalil Mack is a former DPOY but you still hear about other edge rusher like Myles Garrett, Chase Young, and etc...

Who do you guys think is the 2nd best defensive tackle in the game because it something I been wondering for a while now. Defensive tackle isn't really a sexy position like edge rusher so it not really talk about much by the "experts".

This remind me of when Martz went to Detroit and said that Jon Kitna was the best QB he'd ever coached...

Not Warner or Bulger... but Jon Kitna...

I liked the intensity Williams brought to the Rams but that seems like a ago. He is now manning the lowest rung on the NFL DC ladder.

It was Fletcher Cox for a while....now I'd say Chris Jones or Cameron Heyward.

Lol. It's pretty easy to look like a good player on a 0-11 team lol

I would think the complete opposite.

It'll be pretty hard to look good on an 0-11 team

but of course thats JMHO
