LOS ANGELES -- Former coach Jeff Fisher has "no regret whatsoever" about how things went down with the Los Angeles Rams and would seemingly like a little bit of credit for what has since transpired, saying he left the team "in pretty good shape."

Ahead of the Rams' matchup with the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, Fisher, a longtime head coach for both organizations, took part in an hour-long interview with The Midday 180 radio show in Nashville and touched on his most recent employer.

Fisher was fired 13 games into his fifth season with the Rams in 2016, which ended with a 4-12 record in the franchise's return to L.A. Now, under first-year head coach Sean McVay, the Rams are 10-4 and can lock up their first division title since 2003 this weekend.

"I'm a huge fan of the Ram players," Fisher told The Midday 180 on Friday. "They're basically -- I don't want to say my players, but I had a lot to do with that roster. Left them in pretty good shape. And Sean, as he's proven in this very short period of time, is an outstanding young coach. And he's got the offense rolling, which they needed."

The Rams were no better than 7-8-1 in Fisher's five seasons as head coach. During that time, the offense finished no better than 21st in scoring and ranked last in every major category last season.

This season, the Rams lead the NFL in total points, point differential and rank 10th in yards per game.

Fisher, who has a home near Nashville and spent 2017 away from coaching, said he is "really, really excited for the players. They did what we wanted to do before I left."

Fisher credited the additions on the offensive line, with left tackle Andrew Whitworth and center John Sullivan, as well as a trio of new receivers in Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp. He also said McVay has "done a great job" with Jared Goff, whom Fisher played a part in drafting No. 1 overall in 2016.

Goff struggled mightily while starting the final seven games last season, finishing with an 18.3 Total QBR that was the lowest by a wide margin for those who attempted at least 200 passes.

This year, with McVay guiding him, Goff is a first alternate for the Pro Bowl.

"We knew that was coming," Fisher said. "... That's why we traded up with you guys here [the Titans] to get him, because we knew he had that kind of potential. We felt like both the quarterbacks had a chance to be franchise quarterbacks. We were right. Philly got theirs [with Carson Wentz], and the Rams got theirs."

Earlier this week, Fisher's longtime right-hand man, Dave McGinnis, now a radio color commentator for the Titans, was asked about the resurgent Rams by The Tennessean and said: "First of all, Jeff Fisher and I, we built this roster, you know what I'm saying?"

Former coach Jeff Fisher, who inherited a Rams team that had lost 65 of 80 games over five seasons, defended his track record in a radio show Friday, saying his "perspective's different because I went through it, and I know exactly what I went through." Kirby Lee/USA TODAY Sports

McGinnis, the Rams' assistant head coach under Fisher from 2012 to 2016, said the team's defense and special teams "has been playoff ready for two years" and that it was only the offense that needed to get right. McGinnis credited McVay for bringing "a tremendous offensive system in there," but also credited Fisher -- and never once mentioned sixth-year general manager Les Snead -- for drafting star running back Todd Gurley.

"It's just, we were the youngest team in the league four years in a row," McGinnis told The Tennessean. "This team has grown up together. This is one of the better teams in the league right now, personnel-wise and the way they're playing."

At full health, 12 of the Rams' 22 starters were brought in while Fisher was the head coach, in addition to the team's kicker (Greg Zuerlein), punter (Johnny Hekker) and return specialist (Pharoh Cooper), all three of whom were selected to the Pro Bowl.

Special teams was a consistent strength under current special teams coordinator John Fassel, and the defense showed spurts of dominance under former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. But the offense was a top-to-bottom mess, at offensive line, receiver, quarterback and, as last year showed, even running back.

Fisher was head coach for the Titans from 1995 to 2010, starting when they were the Houston Oilers. He led them to six playoff appearances from 1999 to 2008, including a close Super Bowl loss to the Rams. But it has been nine years since Fisher, 59, last coached a team that finished with a winning record.

Fisher, who inherited a Rams franchise that had lost 65 of 80 games over five seasons, defended his track record on The Midday 180.

"My perspective's different because I went through it, and I know exactly what I went through," he said. "I get a kick out of people who [say], 'Oh, you just tied Dan Reeves for the most losses in the history of the National Football League.' Well I'm a few wins away from being in the top 10. So, where do you want to emphasize; what's your point? Two franchises, five different cities, six different stadiums. Not an easy thing to do.

"Chargers moved from San Diego to Orange County and started 0-4. Relocation is huge. I'm not making excuses, but last year we moved from St. Louis to Oxnard, Oxnard to UC Irvine, UC Irvine to Thousand Oaks. And that's what our offseason was about."

I mean he's not wrong. He took over a team that had the worst three year run in NFL history, found a very competent GM (remember Devaney? eeck) and turned the team mediocre.

McGinnis can kick rocks tho. Not sure he did anything other than raid the team store's long sleeve t-shirt inventory.

Jeff , you WERE given credit for building this team, that is the only reason you lasted so long. We all know you drafted TG3, Goff and a plethora of defensive talent . BUT the people working under you sucked and when that happens the coach gets fired.

I also highly doubt that whitworth , Watkins and woods would of came to play in a jeff Fisher offense .

It's over, move on . We have

I applaud Fisher for his work in making this a talented roster, even though its hard to know for sure how much was him and how much was snead. But if he really wants to coach again, talking publicly about how great a job he did in building a talented roster, hurts him more than it helps him imo. Theres no way to pat yourself on the back about that without also admitting you failed at coaching (or hiring the right coaches, either way not a good look). If he wants to be apart of the NFL in the future his best bet is as a gm tbh

Fisher gets credit for the defense, that's it. Funny thing is, i guarantee if McVay was to coach the roster we got after the RG3 trade, we'd still be a damn good team. Maybe not as good as we are now, but I 100% believe we'd have a winning record.

I give him some credit and thank him for getting a great group of players. Why he couldn’t coach such talent is beyond me. The reality is we needed Fisher at the time. He overturned a god awful roster and put us in the sphere of mediocrity. Unfortunately for him, I think that’s his ceiling.

Fisher just couldn't get it. That you need a mix of youth AND veterans. A good example was Fisher letting OL Garrett Reynolds go.

I think the last time I heard from Fish was when he said he was "looking forward to playing the Rams". I guess he has forgiven them now? I give Fish credit for drafting some good players, but he never talks about the misses... Barrett Jones, Rokevious Watkins, Isiah Pead, Brian Quick, Greg Robinson, Tavon Austin (sorry), Joyner at FS, Tre Mason, Jake Long, Nick Foles, etc, etc, etc. He also turned me off with his bush-league tactics and after-the-whistle hits.

I don't recall him leaving the rams in good shape. As a matter of fact he was significantly heavier and looked like he'd been through the ringer.

There was talent on the roster. Problem was they weren't coached up. They were young, don't make an excuse for that Jeff you did that. You just couldn't coach them up. Thanks for putting the guys you did on the roster, Snead and McVay knew how to augment it and McVay and staff were able to do something you never seemed to be able to do coach them up.

The fact remains Jeff Fisher could not get the offensive side of the ball up to a quality NFL standard. He has a good eye for defensive talent. He hired bones for special teams which he does emphasize. A always liked the hard line defensive football with a hard line run game. Now, you have to add a passing game to take advantage of the rule changes. Fisher never got the offensive line working completely to have a consistent hard line run game. He waited to long too address the offensive line after making mistakes with Jake Long and Robinson. Bradford getting hurt was a setback that hurt getting the offense. . He finally got Goff but, would Wentz have been better for his style of football?

Jeff's been about a year out of the spotlight. It's good timing to keep his name out there. Listening to the radio yesterday it sounded like eight or so teams could be looking for a new head coach. The fact remains Fisher would need someone else to be in charge of the offense. He could take a chapter or two from McVay as far as practices. Fast paced instructional type practices that keeps everyone involved.

Fisher can take some credit form the Rams roster. He might have been better off adding he learned something from the Rams moves this offseason. Things like mixing in some veterans and solidifying the offensive line. He needs to show that he has updated his football philosophy to include a more progressive offense. A few weeks ago @den-the-coach posted that Fisher could be a candidate for defensive coordinator at Dallas. At the time I could not see a team giving Jeff Fisher a chance as a head coach. I still don't see it as I don't think he has changed is old school thinking. (no offense to Rods Old School).

Yeah not buying that all.

First McVay is enjoying something that Fisher never had and that’s health. That’s something that cannot be overstated and dismissed. Fisher offense would have never been top 10 like McVay but it would have been more than good enough with that defense and special teams if they was even middle of the road good.

Fisher and staff did coach up Brown Havenstein and Saffold but as I mentioned earlier McVay has benefited from a healthy team.

In my eyes Fisher is absolutely right if McVay inhereited the same team that Fisher did and had to move the team like fisher did we wouldn’t be talking about how Great he McVay is.

We as fans should be happy that Fisher did construct a very good roster for McVay to take over. He implemented his offense and got Woods Sullivan and Whitworth. Tbh it’s all about timing and the timing was perfect for McVay

I don’t understand why some of you say he didn’t coach anyone up. He did coach very well on defense and special teams because that Is what he knew best. He and Snead drafted talented players both on defense and offense. The only problem was that he didn’t hire a quality offensive staff to coach them and that he was fielding backup QBs due to injury. That is why he failed and is no longer an NFL head coach.

If Fisher wants to be relevant in the NFL again, he best sticks to defensive personnel in coaching or a scouting role. Will say he's our Singleterry transitioning McVay like Jim Harbaugh

Hey McGinnis...

He reminds me of the guy who wants so badly to fit in, but has absolutely no clue and adds nothing to the conversation. He is a complete clown. How he got to where he is today is a total mystery to me.

Is leaving the Rams at 4-12 considered good shape? I dunno, he drafted some good players but also wiffed big time on skill positions that matter. LT, WR, RB, and QB. I only say QB because if Jeff Fisher was still here Jared Goff would still be considered a bust. It's only more telling that Jeff Fisher doesn't know what the hell he's doing because all 3 QBs that played for the Rams in the recent past are now Super Bowl contenders and when he was coach they were Pretenders

And just the fact that he says he has no regrets really shows how hard headed this fool is. Just stay retired Fisher. It's where you belong.
