I’m undecided about Higbee. He has potential and I know McVay likes having two TEs. But I need to see more production out of him.

With that, I like this move. The entire offense will be together another 3 years.
You'd probably see more from both Higbee & Everrett if McVay moves to target them more in the offense.

I'm still convinced the Rams defeat the Pat's if more plays went to those two.

This feels like one of those signings that "goes beyond the numbers".

McVay views him as key to the function of the offense. That's my take away from this extension.
I came to this thread to voice my...umm...concern over this contract, but this post made me temper my reaction. McVay clearly sees more value than immediately jumps off the screen (or stat sheet) to most fans. So, I guess we will trust his assessment for now.

I loved the Goff deal good for both sides.

I really don't like this deal whatsoever. We were asking the Vikings for a 6th last year for him. I have never seen Higs stand out worthy of this type of money. I trust Snead/McVay they have earned it, but this deal is a major head scratcher.
I do believe the Rams denied this and the viqueens declined to comment. This all came from one Minny reporter IIRR. No one else confirmed it was true.

Higbee must be highly desired by McVay for use in his offense. McVay now has Higbee here till he is 30 yr old four more seasons from now.

Wonder if the issues with this 2019 Training Camp & Preseason failure to find a future starting in line blocking TE figures into this signing??:palm:.

I've expressed my skepticism about this contract but I'll add something to the other side of it. TE might be one of the hardest positions to fully learn. "3 years to become proficient" in assignments and the nuances of blocking and receiving has been thrown out a lot. Perhaps there's thought that it's better to spend the money here than look to find a new tight end later as opposed to letting a LB like Littleton go when a guy like Howard or guys like Howard are much easier to find in the draft.

All you have to do is youtube the condensed games from last season to know why he is so valued in this system. Despite all of the motions, formations, and big passing plays, this is still an offense built around the run and hence, all of the play-action (highest % in the league).

It's real simple to see why some guys play and some RBs got cut (and why my expectations for Henderson are not nearly as high as most)--you don't block, you don't play. Havs is the best blocking OT in the league. When the Rams run Higbee next to Havs...go watch the film. Those 2 work extremely well together. Higbee has become a very good blocker who just so happens to be able to catch a few passes every now and then--like when it counts. He's a solid, but not flashy player. You also need those kind of guys to win.

I don't know about this signing. It's a lot of money for Higbee's production. If I had to extend a tight end, it would've been Everett - and before him, I'd have extended Littleton, JJ3, and Kupp - but I trust McSnead on this.

...as for the $$, within a couple years this won't seem like that much. There will be bigger paydays ahead for other TEs.

That rose you have for your sig, that wouldn't happen to be from the "Something/Anything" album, would it? If so, NICE!

Also, it's only 15 guaranteed... Likely some money at the end that he likely won't get and may have the re-negotiate or be a cap casualty.

I would've waited on this one i think because....Everett may break out BIG time this year.
Still, continuity is very important to this regime offensively and i happen to agree with the power of that philosophy.

You know why pitchers can't hit worth a shit? Because they don't do it very often.

i really believe this - Rams don't much give a fuck whether Higbee can catch or not. They know he can block, and plays pretty fucking well in crunch time.
Seriously...with Woods, Cooks and Kupp, and now Reynolds, and oh btw Everett and Gurley, why would you design play for Higbee. Which may be why he gets open when it's crucial, imo.

(Plus Goff said, my homey stays or I don't sign)

I’m all for it, but what confuses me is that they almost traded him for a 7th round pick to Minnesota. Talk about a 180

I luv Higs. He's made a bunch of clutch catches in crunch time.
I'd rather have Kittle, but Higs is nice...go fit for this team and our qb.

Like I said in another thread, I believe both Higbee and Everett are underrated players and could be the best tandem of TE's on any team. I really expect McVay to play more 2 TE's as he expands the offense.

Double TE sets will force defenses to play their base. But it still gives the Rams potentially 4 downfield receivers with Everett being a mismatch for move coverage LBs and safeties. Send Woods and Cooks deep, Everett mid-level and the RB or Higbee short. One of those WR's will probably be single covered. If they play a cover 2 then Everett and Higbee should be able to beat LB coverage. Higbee has deceptive speed for a man his size and with 6'6" height and 33" arms he has an excellent play radius.

McVay has to know he's got too under the radar weapons in his TE's.
