Maybe I will be the first one to say we should have just kicked the field goal. We get a turnover and pass up a gimme three points to risk getting a first down. I was surprised to see Hekker running for it.
Nope. @LesBaker beat you to it.

They showed several angles during the game. That is what prompted Pererra (sp?) and the announcers - INCLUDING Joe Buck - to say that it would be overturned. It was clear to all of them including the former Vice President of officiating.

IMO it was good by a foot. Replay needs to be done out of the stadium so it eliminates the worry about refs not making each other look bad. They have enough money to have a few guys sitting in a room not watching anything and the send them the camera angles from the games.

It needs to come out of the refs hands.

The first thing that comes to mind when I see a replay that clearly shows the wrong call was made but it doesn't get overturned is that someone is covering for a work buddy and doesn't want to hurt their grading and that person will do the same for them.

Look up LOL.........I mentioned it this morning.

Yeah, every commentator that has shown this replay during other games, everyone in the sports bar I was at (I was one of 4 only Rams fans) all said it looked like a first down. I dont get it. I still dont. It resulted in a point swing taking potential 3-7 points away from us and giving the Saints +7 (since they scored).

Yes, we should have stopped them on defense and the game isn't won/lost by this one play, but it sure did set an early tone losing the momentum we just got and should have continued to have with a first

Just heard Dean Blandino on XM and he thought it was clearly missed and should have been a first down.

First down.

Most significant aspect of that photo, to me, is noting where the ref is located. He just happens to be standing at the worst possible angle from which to make an accurate spot. Heck, he may not have even been able to see the ball, since it was on the other side of Hekker's body. If the ref were standing ten yards further downfield, he would have been able to see that it was a first down.

Watch the video, the ref standing there is the one who makes the spot, and he had a terrible view of the play.

i can't agree there man. i've seen refs make spots from all different angles and most of the time they are spot on. like to the mm. they know their shit.

that's why when they make such a horrible spot and then confirm it after all the video evidence showed it was a yard short, a whole yard, it makes you go hmmm.

You guys are hilarious. The refs and the NFL are out to get us

no one said they are out to get us. The issue is that there is growing concern and evidence, both actual and circumstantial that the NFL is not a pure contest.

That matters to some, and I'm one of them.

I stopped watching baseball when they excused steroids and I'll stop watching football if they continue with this "narrative steering" which is going on whether anyone wants to acknowledge it or not.

I mean it's that or the refs just happen to be calling calls that just happen to help certain teams at certain times so that it just happens to allow the narratives to continue.

The narrative I'm seeing?

Brees needs to get another Super Bowl before he's done.

If I had to bet on any narrative, it'd be that Brees "deserves" another one.

Watch. Mark this post.

The Super Bowl will be a battle of first Ballot HoFers and the Saints will win a "super exciting shootout!!!" with record scores and everyone having great games as long as you don't play defense.

Oh, and it will also be about the redemption from his "bounty gate" scandal and about how Asshole Face has "reformed"....

This crap is so blatantly in our face that it's obnoxious.

But hey, people enjoy wrestling, too. No shame in that. Let's just not pretend that the final winners aren't part of the NFL's narrative.

I would like to laugh at your take, but after watching the 9-11 superbowl, I can't.

To me, it was just a bad call. And maybe their super-slo-mo replay showed the exact instance where Hekker's knee first hit the turf and where his arm was at the time, and it didn't match up with the marker. I dunno. But if this was 'rigged' to favor the Saints, then I'll need to know why the refs let our DBs get away with so much pass interference. Because, in my opinion, there was a lot of it.

Great shot of the obvious. First down.

I understand missing the play on the field, everything happens so fast. But to kick it to the booth where EVERYONE can plainly see it was a first down (including the announcers and former high-ranking officials), and STILL get it wrong?

I knew we were toast after that. We weren't going to see ANY holding calls, DPIs or any marginal calls go our way on this day.

I have to admit that I found myself thinking we got away with three late in the game. Make up calls?

I still think that is a whole other ball game if they get that call right and there is really no acceptable excuse for getting it THAT wrong after review.

What's unfortunate is how that in all sports one missed call can have such a huge impact on the game.

Heckers right knee came down first. Your picture is pointing to his left leg which came down second.

Given that, he was still extended and the ball should have been placed right at the first down marker necessitating a measurement.

What I don't understand is that the call was upheld. The challenge was the spot of gain. The ball should have been moved forward some amount but they didn't do that.

I'm pretty sure plan-A was to throw it to 89 on that fake, but he was covered so Hekker ran with it.
