Wouldn't it be the coup de gras if AD decided he'd rather just retire than go through 2023 with no help?
Man thats the only reason in the last week I've been thinking we should consider it. He's getting paid a ton of money but he can't be happy with our off-season. If he retires it will be devastating, especially given the trade value he'd garner from a contending team. Still weird to even talk about this, but every day that goes by it makes more sense. Load up on picks and attack '24 &'25.

Who knew that losing Gaines would make ROD lose its collective mind...?
Losing Wagner was fine because we won a Superbowl without him.
Losing Floyd was fine because he was way overpaid and we know Donald makes any DE look great.
Scott can be replaced.
Ashawn can be replaced in the draft by a run stopper.
Ramsey was a devastating loss but we had to pay the piper and his age makes him the logical sacrificial lamb.

But you can't pay your 26 year old DT who has a rare combo of run/pass skills after letting all those other Defenders walk out?

It's basically Donald and no one.

I guess with Gaines there was hope we could find a pass rusher in the draft and still have a formidable front. Maybe get lucky on some secondary players as well.

Now? our defense is going to suck. Some here probably have never went through a bottom 5 defense. It's rough man.

Rams have never gone into the draft with a room that had a ton of holes like that. I haven't looked at the list of DL but I am sure we see them start to sign some role players and spot starters to round out the roster prior to the draft. Probably won't be DL. But they're gonna need to get to the point where they don't have more holes than picks. At least get it close.

I can't believe, that nobody is exited about all the comp picks we are going to get next year.

Guys we have no Cap room. You can't pay these guys with magic beans. I have no idea why anyone is surprised by how this free agency period has gone.

To me the only surprising thing is that Stafford, Kupp and Donald are considered untradeable.

Gaines was pretty good, but, this is not a huge deal. Graded out as the 72nd best interior defender next to Donald. Brown should be better. Get a grip.

I know some fans like to lean on PFF's ratings. I'm not one of them.

72nd!?!

Do you really think every team in the NFL (32) has 2-3 Interior Defensive Linemen better than Greg Gaines?

I don't.

I liked Gaines. Hustled. Played hard. Was a World Champion. But you can take those PFF ratings with a grain of salt. At best they're a base for reality. At worst, they're worthless. Supposed they came with a disclaimer like plus or minus 15% or 20%. He could be anywhere from the 62nd to 82nd or 58th to 86th best DT. That's a mighty wide range and still not too high. Point is he was the 2nd best DT on the Rams, sometimes the 3rd best if A'Shawn was playing well. So we wanted to keep him. Is it possible Bobby Brown and Ernest Brown can replicate his performance? Better? Worse? We're gonna find out.

Just add him to the list of complimentary players we've lost. And hope they can replace those complimentary players. Ramsey and to a much lesser degree, Floyd and Wagner will be tougher to replace. So it's quite possible the 2023 Rams won't fully replace Ramsey and one of those two. Is that going to make a 10-7 Rams team 5-12? If the offense remains healthy and executes McVay's offense sufficiently, I don't think so.

I now understand what the Rams were saying with the “we’re keeping Donald, Stafford, and Kupp” thing. Apparently they are all we might keep. Which is kinda funny since two of those players could possibly retire next year. Donald is very likely to leave. Staff is only getting more beat up and older.

Total effing meltdown shitshow.

Great timing now that I will have affordable access to Sunday Ticket.

UNLESS AD99 was planning on paying for 2-3 more years, it'd probably be best (and I absolutely HATE saying this) for the Rams to trade him. If he only has 1-2 years left, trading him would clear a lot of cap and grab us much needed draft capital. It's not as if he's going to make or break a SB run.

Sadly, I couldn’t agree more.

I started a thread on the entire article which has a big shout-out to Gaines.

But Greg Gaines was the difference maker. The Washington Huskey had six tackles (three solo), two pressures, and a quarterback hit that led to Rams first interception. We have seen how good Gaines can be with Aaron Donald in the lineup, but this was the first time we were able to see Gaines’s effectiveness without a three-time defensive player absorbing double and triple teams.
