Goff Question

We knew Goff was a good QB when he had protections and a run game. Problem is what will he be in the playoffs when teams take away the run game and easy throws and make him read the field quickly while under duress.

But the Vikings and Chiefs games back in 2018 were real clinics by him for sure. Two of the best games I've ever seen by a QB, he just has to get himself back into the playoffs and show he can elevate his game in that tougher environment.

My guess is he will get next season as the starter again with a highly drafted rook on the depth chart behind him. That should be the team that he proves himself with, or doesn't.

Jared Goff could have pouted when the Rams jettisoned him. Instead he's led the Lions to the verge of the playoffs

As career script flips go, this one could have turned as bitter a Midwestern winter. Thus far Goff has refused to let it.

Neither guy was coming off the season Goff is… and Indy had traded for Wentz first. Numerous teams will need a QB.
26 for a quality starting QB will be a bargain next year.

Washington, Indy, Tampa?, Giants? Carolina, Atlanta, New Orleans.. Houston? Pittsburgh?

Ultimately, I doubt they move on from Goff this offseason... and they certainly won't be doing it through a release.

It's just one school of thought as to what the Lions are going to do.
If they think there's a QB who can be as least as good as Goff within the first two years.. it's a big salary cap advantage and could put them over the top.

No way. On the contrary they have recently given him a vote of confidence. Having to replace Goff with a rookie qb would be a major step backward. They can instead use the Rams' 1st rounder on a top defensive player and greatly improve the team.

Seems to me the Lions need more defense to be a real contender and could get a serious player at the top of the draft. We'll see what Brad Holmes wants to do, but he's the one who brought in Goff and is now being rewarded with a very competitive team.

I am aware how you feel about Goff my man. It's admirable. But I don't share that confidence. He would need to show me he can QB the team without a run game in the playoffs for me to be sure he's arrived.

He has an excellent line and I tip my cap to Brad and that staff for the build so far. They're building that team right and I have felt that way from the beginning when I saw the QB coach hire. But for Jared there's that equation where if they get into the playoffs what happens when you see a defense that removes your run game. Can you make them pay and do it well enough to get the dub. Hopefully we'll see this year too, I'd like to see him get in.

It's a math thing.

Goff is doing fine. He's not a difference maker.. but he's very good on schedule and when protected. He's not making any plays with his legs.

If you think you can get equal production, overall, from a rookie.. you probably do it for the salary cap benefits.. young, first contract QB gives you a lot of money to play with.

Goff isn't an old vet; he hasn't entered his prime yet.

Don't think we will get to see Goff without a run game any time soon, so your equation may not come to pass. The Detroit running game is very creative and the oline can really run block. They have an rb with 14 or 15 running TDs. OC is mixing up the run and pass very well-- he will be a head coach soon. And the passing game will be very hard to stop once Chark and Jameson Williams are really up to speed.

Lions offense could do some damage if they can run the table and reach the playoffs. It's a great spot for Goff and I expect he will excel as the team matures.

Detroit has become my favorite team to root for this year. All my friends laughed at me when I predicted they would go at best 10-7 but probably 9-8 and slip in as a wildcard. Had the defense not blown so many late game leads they would already be at 9 or 10 wins with a berth all but locked up.

Holmes will probably go edge with the Ram's pick and CB with theirs. Their team is really coming together fast. There is no way they dump Goff. Holmes ain't no fool. He was a Goff advocate before the Rams drafted him so he knows exactly what he has. Goff is still the guy that beat Mahomes in 2018 in that classic. He never had a losing season under McVay.

But now in Detroit, he's with a coach that built the offense around his skill set. He understands his role is to be a complimentary piece in the offense and does not have to be the be all and do all on that side of the ball. He showed in 2019 behind a very poor OL that he can carry the team when he has to. Holmes is going to move on from that? Get real, they have a franchise QB who is cheap right now. This year he's at $31M, next year $30.6M, and in 2024 $31.6M. For a franchise QB that isn't expensive. Only the media Goff haters are saying they will move on from Jared. Why would they? They built the team around him. He's actually in the top 5 or 6 QBs in the NFL this year. That's how good he's playing. His INTs have dropped once he got out of the McVay system and guess what? He doesn't need the HC in his ear until the last 15 seconds. That was strictly McVay's way of tearing him down saying I don't trust you to not break my system.

Now McVay thinks he has a new toy in Mayfield, and maybe he will have but not right now. Baker has to clean up a whole lot of things, which he can if he stays a year as Stafford's understudy. But Detroit is showing what the Rams lost because McVay wouldn't build around the QB that they had. 2018 showed he was capable of getting the team to the Super Bowl. But isn't it interesting that in 2019 they dismantled his solid OL and then blamed him when his play dropped off? Yet we see it again when Stafford is behind a bunch of backups and how important the OL is to the success of that franchise QB.

As I've watched Jared I've more than once wondered how things would have been different if McVay designed his offense around Goff's skills. What he did was dumb down the offense to a point no one could be successful. But had Sean taken the time to redesign his offense he would have had a quality starter. Maybe not elite but good enough to get to and win a Super Bowl. In 2018 he went head to head with the NFL's best QB and beat him. But that apparently meant nothing to McVay.

Sean is an elite HC there is no denying that. But he has his own flaws that I for one am not blind to. Yeah, he got Stafford who won the Super Bowl but after one year that is all in jeopardy with a window that looks to be closing fast. So yeah he has a new toy. I just hope he learned from Goff and structures his offense to suit Baker. If he does then Mayfield could have real long term success here. So far Baker has avoided some of Stafford's mistakes by forcing the ball. When a QB is rolling out the vision of the field is different as he is watching the defenders coming at him, the yard markers, and so he won't see the field completely. Yet Baker may have taken the sack rather than risk a turnover, which is something he might have done in Cleveland. That is viewed by most as a negative, but I saw it as a positive sign that maybe he's matured as a QB. I've never been a supporter of Mayfield, in fact, I've been very critical of him. But the guy on the field tonight was a more mature QB than the one that played in Cleveland. Contrast that with Murray who is the same limited QB now that he was as a rookie. Yeah to me little things matter because when added up they aren't little anymore.

Their defense has really surprised me in the last few games.

They were so horrible in their first 7 games or so and now they are actually somewhat decent.

I guess the young players are starting to learn how to play defense.

2 coaches (Pleasant and Lynn) that I'm a fan of, both got replaced and then each of their squads improved. Football is a funny game some times
