Staley blitzed more than you would expect for preseason. Both Alaric Jackson and Anchrum looked pretty good in this game. With teams needing help at OT there is no way Alaric clears waivers now. It looks like Evans' roster spot might be in jeopardy.
T. Jackson might clear waivers but WR needy teams like Detroit might put claims on him. The fact that Benny Sko didn't play tonight tells me he's expected to make this roster as the #6 WR.
Neither Perkins or Hodges impressed enough to worry about keeping. Hodges, issues with decision-making were on display as was Perkins being slow in his reads. With Wolford entrenched at #2 I think they will pick up a QB after the last cuts to put on the PS. Perkins probably clears waivers if they choose to keep him one more year. Perkins isn't a pocket passer and probably never will be. Both QBs were late with their throws. Perkins was more accurate but even he had problems with consistency.
Anderson isn't making this roster. He's strictly a camp body right now. Calais looks like the Ram KR guy. I think both Funk and Jones will rotate in relief of Henderson.
Jonah Williams looked good at DE. His speed was evident as was his size and strength. Brontae Harris' lack of long speed was clearly evident. Morris looks like he's going to play Rapp as a coverage LB as he was doing likewise with Gervase.
The lack of true ILBs left the interior exposed to the inside runs. Morris needs to refocus his priorities on how he plays early and short yardage downs. McVay can't be happy that the run defense was so poor.
I know it was all backups but Morris' secondary wasn't played as aggressively as Staley's version most of the time. When it was the difference was clearly evident. Raheem's choice of some players seems off. His use of Daka, Banks, Copeland and Moncrief is what seemed off. Lawler isn't an OLB nor is he an edge, he's an iLB who could have helped vs the run. His QB pressures were the results of coverage. He lacks the speed to play as an edge and at times it showed. He wouldn't duplicate that level of play vs first string offensive fronts.
Will Morris adapt? Pre-season isn't just for players. It's for coaches too allowing them to adjust how they uses their players to get the most out of them.
I agree with most of this and saw the game the same.
But Lawler as an ILB? I don't know what to say about that.
Lawler might not have the pass rush ability to be a starter but that's just one small part of the edge job.
Being able to be stout vs the run and shed blocks is very valuable vs teams such as the Niners.
I can see Lawler can fill a rotational goaline and run downs role.
And not that Lawler has Floyds speed but Floyd had bad sack numbers before getting a chance in the Aaron Donald cleanup universe. Lawlers ability to shed and chase, and play with contain as he showed today has value on the edge.
