I think calling him fantastic was a stretch. He was better than average. He's got some work to do, especially in pass blocking.

But I think he showed potential to be sure.

I think given that a six round pick started on a playoff team, and made a big FA signing expendable…it was a fantastic pick. He’s not perfect, but if that was his floor…

That’s still a fine pick. #197 overall.

I really do love the optimism on ROD. Yours included.

But sometimes, the optimism is a little ... INSANE.

Wanted to see the last 197th overall draft pick that was a good NFL player.
Figured I might need to go back a little; and I did.
Robaire Smith was a pretty good NFL DL. He was drafted 25 years ago.

Now, if the cap savings is as reported, it's a good trade ... but 'a fine pick'??? ... I don't know.

Yeah, I think fans kind of overstated how good he was because he was a late round rookie. Fantastic value but improvement is needed.

It would make more sense in my mind to compare it to what we typically do with a 6th round pick. But you're right, if the cap savings are what's being reported, that's enough by itself to make it a good trade.

No time like the present. And it's still a sixth pick within the first 200 players. This class may not have the top talent, but it certainly has good depth at a lot of positions, particularly wide receiver, defensive line, running back, tight end, and defensive back to an extent.

Lots of options to play with four sixth round picks - and more picks possibly counting.

I did just that a couple hours ago. 2024 was Great. 2023 ... Not so much.

From earlier ...
Rams now have four six round picks ... Can they repeat the 6th Round of 2024!?!
... Tyler Davis, Josh Karty, Jordan Whittington and Beaux Limmer

NOT the 2023 Sixth Round ... Tre'Vius Tomlinson, Ochaun Mathis and Zach Evans.

It's a fine pick to me because they might have gotten nothing for him.

They might draft a player or use it in a trade up scenario. Or in a maybe trade it for another player.

Optimism regarding possibilities is cool. But cynicism regarding the unknown seems sad to me.

Expand your search good sir.

By my count, we've had 12 6th round picks in the McSnead tenure. We've had these 7 hits, if a hit is defined as a role player / contributor: Fuller, Lake, Kendrick, Davis, Karty, Whittington, and Limmer.

7/12 is a 58% hit rate. With that hit rate, I don't think it takes much optimism to hope for or expect something good to happen with pick #197. We have better odds that it will than a 50/50 coin flip.

Is anyone saying he wasn't a fantastic pick?

Sometimes the value of having more late picks is that it might prevent you from forcing a pick of need positions early.

Not that you expect the late picks to contribute right away, but it gives you extra swings for depth positions. So this year the Rams may want to bring in a LB, so maybe instead of burning a 4th rd pick on a LB, you take some swings in the 6th for a LB.

It also gives a chance to double up on a position. Last year it was Fiske and then in the 6th Davis. This year I expect a CB early and another late. Maybe the same for a WR where they grab a polished guy early and a toolsy guy late who is on the raw side.

Those that are ONLY discussing the draft pick seem to be completely overlooking the taking on of the contract, including the bonus which freed up SUBSTANTIAL cap space. If it "only" made up the difference in the Stafford contract, THAT, in and of itself, is a pretty big win. Say it covers the difference and adds a little extra for the FA market, including our own, that definitely adds more value than JUST a late 6th rd. pick.

Pretty sure you meant sad ... not said.

There is a ton of stuff between Optimism and Pessimism (more appropriate than cynicism).
For instance, there is Realism which often comes with maturity, knowledge and experience.

I want ALL THE 6TH ROUNDERS!!!

It's going to support my pet theory that Rams will be one of the only teams to trade up in 1st round for a pass catcher but pay less than a premium for it due to how bad the 1st is. We need a bunch of 6ths to do it!
It’s gonna take more than a couple of 6th rounders to do that. It takes a lotta points to move around in the 1rst. How would you do it?

4 6th rounders. That will give Snead options if there's a player we like in the 5th round.
It’s really bugging me, not having a 5th rounder. I would love to see the Rams find a way to jump back in.

The taking on the contract is the biggest thing by far. I could care less if the pick was 10 years down the road but the Rams actually did really well on that. You don't get Mulligan's like that in NFL very often

Limmer was pick #217 . I’d say he’s decent.
