Projecting landing spots for the NFL's top free agents in 2019
By Michael Renner • Feb 15, 2019

Between now and mid-March, a lot of the players on PFF’s list of the top-50 free agents will have either been franchised or re-signed by their respective franchises. In fact, I wrote an article yesterday about the players who should (and shouldn’t) receive a tag before the new league year. We have seen strange things happen in the past though, and if PFF’s top-25 free agents aren’t headed back to their current teams in 2019, here are our dream homes for each.

Brandon Graham, Los Angeles Rams
Because of his age, Graham will be a notch below the rest of the top edge-rushers price wise. The Rams are in win-now mode and have no need bigger than edge.

Rodger Saffold, Los Angeles Chargers
Guard has been a nightmare for the Chargers the past couple years. Left guard Dan Feeney allowed the most pressures of any guard in the NFL this past season.

Ndamukong Suh, Indianapolis Colts
Will Chris Ballard finally splurge on a ‘win now’ sort of move? With a playoff roster and $107 million in cap space, it would almost be irresponsible not to make one or two such plays this offseason

Lamarcus Joyner, Oakland Raiders
Marcus Gilchrist is also a free agent, but Joyner would be an upgrade and a long-term solution. It’s also a position that is relatively weak on paper in this year’s draft.

Forget full contract terms (# years, total $$$, etc.) - as they are often not fully realized. Guaranteed money is king in negotiating a new contract. I got to believe if the Rams can stay close to the guaranteed money offered to Saffold from other teams - Saffold will stay with the Rams.

Graham is an interesting idea, they usually run a 3-4 and he plays end there at like 270 doesn't he?

Potential free agency additions for the Los Angeles Rams
https://www.turfshowtimes.com/2019/...free-agency-nfl-shaq-barrett-brandon-marshall
There are going to be a lot of quality free agents when the FA period opens. Who could the Rams be eyeing? Let’s find out below.
By Sosa Kremenjas

With the NFL’s free agency period approaching, many veterans are slowly being released and told they wont be employed by their current teams heading into the 2019 season. The Los Angeles Rams are no different, though they have yet to actually cut/let anybody go like some other franchises.

It’ll be tough to pinpoint exactly what the Rams are expected to do in free agency because they have yet to re-sign or cut anybody, but let’s take a look at some potential free agents who could be targets, either by former connections or by position of need.

Let’s jump into it:

Defensive Tackle
DT Johnathan Hankins

Hankins is currently a 26-year old who’ll be 27 by the time free agency rolls around. Hankins — who was a stellar player early in his career — has now seen two free agency periods in which he didn’t receive the kind of money he was seeking, both from the Indianapolis Colts and most recently the Oakland Raiders. Hankins settled for a 1-year $2m deal from the Raiders this past year. Hankins is a mammoth of a man at 6’2” and 330 lbs (yeah right). Hankins has 27 tackles-for-loss, 12 sacks, and 220 tackles in his six-year career. The Rams are in flux at the DT position with Ndamukong Suh slated to be a free agent, meaning Hankins could be a low-cost addition that specializes as a run-stuffer.

Edge Rusher
OLB Shaquil Barrett

Shaq Barrett is a 26-year old edge rusher who never got the chance to consistently start games for the Denver Broncos over the past five seasons because of tremendous depth at the pass rusher position. Barrett — who has years of experience with Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips — is a solid all-around player who might not “wow” you, but is as dependent as they come. In four NFL seasons, Barrett has amassed 14 sacks, 25 tackles-for-loss, seven pass deflections, seven forced fumbles, and 35 quarterback hits. His current market value according to Spotrac is $7.4m/year, making him a good cost-efficient option should the Rams choose not re-sign OLB Dante Fowler Jr, or choose to supplement the spot across from him.

OLB Preston Smith

Preston Smith is another mid-tier pass rusher who’s solid but unspectacular, which sort of seems to be the theme for my list. Like Barrett, Smith is only 26-years old and has a logical connection to the Rams’ coaching staff which includes Head Coach Sean McVay, Defensive Line Coach Bill Johnson, and Linebackers Coach Joe Barry. In four seasons, Smith has amassed 24.5 sacks, 29 tackles-for-loss, 13 pass deflections, four interceptions, four forced fumbles, and 59 quarterback hits. Smith is a big-bodied edge with long arms who has started all 48 games in the past three seasons for the Washington Redskins. Spotrac currently has his market value at $11.1m/year.

Inside Linebacker
ILB Brandon Marshall

We have our first “true” veteran on the list as Brandon Marshall (no not the receiver) has been notified today that the Denver Broncos are likely to part ways with him. Marshall is a 29-year old who was the leader of the Broncos’ defense playing on a 4-year $32m contract, meaning the Broncos will eat a $4m cap penalty though ultimately save $5m in total by releasing Marshall. Marshall has been a highly productive player for the Broncos, though he’s been injured in both of the past two seasons (still played 16 games in 2017). In his seven-year career, Marshall has totaled 419 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 21 pass deflections, 28 tackles-for-loss, nine quarterback hits, and four forced fumbles. Marshall obviously has a connection with Wade Phillips, essentially playing his best football under Phillips. In this circumstance, since he was released, Marshall wouldn’t affect the compensatory pick formula if the Rams choose to play that game again.

ILB Denzel Perryman

Denzel Perryman is an intriguing case of a great young player who simply cannot remain healthy. In four years in the NFL, Perryman has never played more than 14 games in a season and just recently only played in nine after a serious injury knocked him out for the year. Even then, Perryman has shown a propensity to play at a high level and is still only 25-years old. In four years, Perryman has amassed 233 tackles, four sacks, four pass deflections, 18 tackles-for-loss, six quarterback hits, two interceptions, and a forced fumble. If the Rams choose to take a shot on a powerful and nasty linebacker, Perryman could prove to be a worthy gamble.

Cornerback
CB Jason Verrett

Jason Verrett could prove to be the steal of this free agency class, or could just continue his uncanny ability to not remain healthy. Verrett — who’s proven to be a superstar talent on the field — just hasn’t been on it enough. Out of four years in the league, Verrett has only played in more than four games one year (2015). Injuries — and serious ones at that — are going to be a major hurdle for Verrett to clear, so nobody should depend on him as a starter. If you can afford to sign him as a backup with the potential to remain healthy and ultimately a starter, that could pay off in big dividends. Verrett is only 27-years old and has the versatility and skill-set to play both on the boundary and in nickel. Even though he’s hardly played, he still has five interceptions, 19 pass deflections, and a touchdown on his resume. Not only that, but the Rams’ CB group could look a lot different come next year:

Nobody has talked about CB, but:

• Aqib Talib 1-year remaining
• Marcus Peters 1-year remaining
• Sam Shields UFA
• Troy Hill RFA
• Dominique Hatfield ERFA
• Kevin Peterson ERFA

— Sosa K (@QBsMVP) February 9, 2019
Safety
FS Earl Thomas

Is there anything to say about the soon-to-be 30-year old superstar free safety that we don’t already know? Earl Thomas is on pace to be one of the best safeties to ever grace an NFL field, so he should absolutely be an option for anyone looking for a safety with unlimited range and an uncanny ability to make game-changing plays. Thomas obviously had a serious injury this season with the Seattle Seahawks which sparked his infamous middle finger to the Seahawks’ sideline (nice) while being carted off picture, so that could be motivation for him to join the Rams given any interest. Not only that, but Thomas’ skill-set has re-invented how NFL defenses play, allowing the Seahawks to play an aggressive cover-1/cover-3 scheme that many teams (including the Rams) try to emulate today. He’s going to cost a lot, but there isn’t a better fit or talent available on the market.

FS Tre Boston

Tre Boston — yes, he’s the guy who blasted two Rams receivers this year when they played the Arizona Cardinals — could be a cheap veteran option if the Rams choose to let FS Lamarcus Joyner walk. Boston is a solid and dependable player on the backend, but for whatever reason had to settle for a 1-year $2.5m contract with the Cardinals last year.

FS Glover Quin

Glover Quin was just released today by the Detroit Lions, making him a free agent immediately available and ready to sign. Quin is a true veteran in every way possible as he’s 33-years old and has started 16 games every year for the past nine seasons for both the Detroit Lions and Houston Texans. Early in his career, Quin was a nickel cornerback though he eventually made the switch to free safety and flourished. In 10 NFL seasons, Quin has amassed over 85 pass deflections and 24 interceptions, not to mention another 10 forced fumbles and two defensive touchdowns. If the Rams want to add a stabilizing veteran for a decent price and a short-term deal, Quin could prove to be a fantastic addition for the backend of the defense, something similar to what LT Andrew Whitworth was to the offense.

Some very interesting FA prospects but a lot of injuries among them. I think Tre Boston would be a very good FS pickup for reasonable $$$. If the Rams keep Suh - they need to move him to DT instead of NT. If that's the case - then perhaps they trade Brockers and pick up Hankins (I was banging the drum for him last year thinking we could not afford Suh).

He could be but I wonder if he's more like Robert Quinn, better at end in a 4-3 than edge in a 3-4.

Talked to my Eagles friend and he said he is a 4-3 defensive end. Didn't do as well with Chip Kelly's 3-4. Former Eagle Vinny Curry might be a cheaper part time pass rusher. He was moved around the defensive line but also more 4-3. Wade does go with four down lineman a lot of 3rd downs. Curry was cut by the Eagle and Bucs to save money. Was hurt last year and fell down the depth charts. Could be cheap with incentives. Rams need to get Donald some help and need a deeper defensive line rotation.

I don't think the rams will keep both Saffold, at a new more expensive contract, and whit, at his current contract. Noteboom can start at either position this year and the money will be needed elsewhere. Starting the capable youngster saves over 10 mil immediately. Get a swing guy in FA or the draft.

I'm also curious to see if mcvay thinks Jordan reed is an option. I'd love having him and Everett on either side of the line with 2 receivers and Gurley. Plenty of run options from this formation which also provides 5 legitimate playmakers who can beat single coverage. If the defense plays more DBs audible to a run. More LBs, throw the ball.

The defense is more complicated. Talib and peters have become a package deal. Peters is still very cheap but the rams use him differently without talib and we saw how that worked out.

Joyner has to be gone. And yes I dare to dream that earl thomas will fill his spot.

I hate to say it because I love the guy and what he means to the team but it may be time to move on from brockers. I wince a little just writing it but man, that money can be spent on other defenders and JF Myers could slide right in. The situation on the dline makes him the noteboom of the defense.

Would like to retain Fowler or a Fowler facsimile. He showed how much we were missing that edge presence. The tricky part is trying to estimate what Obo does this year. Dont want to pay top dollar for a multi year Fowler contract only to have Obo start to be the player some of us think he can be.

That leaves the LBs where I won't try to guess wades current assessment but I wouldn't mind seeing wright from Seattle or smith from Washington come in for a visit. Maybe newlyey released brandon marshall is a good option.

I like Hankins as a rotational role guy and I love Preston. I think Preston will cost more than $11M and more than the Rams will pay.
I don't think a team should weaken its strength in an attempt the strengthen its weakness.
In other words, resign Saffold.
The Rams don't need big splash FAs on D. I think I'd prefer several solid, role guys like Hankins. If the Rams develop a consistent D that can hold teams to under 24 points it will 12 wins a year (range) for the near future.

I believe the Rams have an extension ready to go for Whit. One that will lower his cap hit and allow for them to pay Saffold. Only thing they're probably waiting on right now is his decision on whether he'll retire, but I think the reports of him being back in Rams Park right after the loss working out indicate he isn't done. Really prefer they bring him back and if he takes a final deal that helps the team they can probably have both.

And I'm with you on Reed. He's a wildcard in a lot of ways, where there is a good chance the Skins won't want to pay him $23M over the remainder of his contract and his cap hit just dipped. I'm sure they're trying to trade him, but how many teams will want to take on that contract when he hasn't been able to stay healthy? Probably a team like the whiners who have so much cap space they don't care, and who would do it to spite McVay. But he might well hit the market and if he does I agree that the Rams are a perfect landing spot.

Re: Boom... I find myself wondering whether the Rams think he is a starter and if so is that at OG or LT. Many of us think he's the heir apparent, myself included. But do the Rams? If they do, it could impact a lot of things. If not, that Whit extension is a near given, and we might be in for a draft with a LT prospect at the top where many of us are hoping for a defender.

I don't think there's any real doubt that they see him as starting caliber. They wouldn't have gone with such a small in number OL group last year if that weren't the case - they especially wouldn't have dumped Brown if they didn't have confidence in Noteboom as a starter.

I think the plan is for him to be a tackle eventually - but if Whit can be back with a lower cap hit, why not give Noteboom another season, or maybe have him start at guard if need be? Even if Noteboom is the eventual LT, they have Whit now, and have other uses for Noteboom anyway. Obviously, if he's a starter at guard, they will be drafting another OL, because they'll need more depth.

Well the key with Brown is that he's not a LT. I don't doubt that they think Boom can handle himself at OG, but for purposes of draft impact (i.e. the Rams electing to go get a LT of the future in round 1) that is the question I'd love to overhear them discussing in their draft preps.

I suspect they like him at OG, and think he might be a LT of the future. But yeah it sure would be nice if they were high on him at LT.

Back to the OL... As I consider the ZBS and all the dominant units we've seen particularly of the Denver variety, they tend to dictate smaller OL who can move well and more importantly guys who can be had mid to late rounds. Obviously Saff is a bit of a freak with good size plus mobility, but I find myself wondering whether they have already crossed him off the depth chart with Boom penciled in and plans to address interior OL in midrounds. That comes back to Boom of course and how they view him. Just an interesting topic to myself at least. :D

The free agency market value for Ndamukong Suh
ByAnthony Broome

https://247sports.com/nfl/minnesota-vikings/Article/Ndamukong-Suh-market-value-129226332/

Ndamukong Suh
has long been seen as one of the most feared defensive players in the entire National Football League and he once again proved that to be a fair concern in 2019 when he played for the Los Angeles Rams. Suh was dominant next to arguably the league's best defensive player in Aaron Donald and now he once again looks poised to cash in during free agency at the start of the new league year.

So what will it take to add one of the league's best defensive tackles to a team via free agency? According to Spotrac's Market Value tool, the cost to sign Suh right now likely comes in around $9.3 million on a three-year deal. It is less than the $14 million that he made last season or the massive contract that paid him an average of $19 million per season on a six-year deal (that was cut short) with the Miami Dolphins, but this appears to be the going rate for his services moving forward.

Suh, who signed a one-year deal in Los Angeles last offseason, had 59 total tackles during the 2019 campaign with 4.5 sacks and a pair of fumble recoveries while making every start next to Donald in Wade Phillips' Rams defensive unit. Prior to that, he had spent the three seasons before playing for the Miami Dolphins on a deal that he signed for six years at a total price tag of $119 million. They let him go as a cap casualty during the 2018 offseason, which opened the door for him to join last year's

He began his career spending the first five years with the Detroit Lions, who selected him with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft after a dominant college career at the University of Nebraska. Suh has no shortage of accolades in his career, having been named to the Pro Bowl five times and All-Pro team five times, as well. Three of those All-Pro nods were on the First-Team, while the remaining two were Second-Team honors. He also won the NFC's Defensive Rookie of the Year award in 2010 with Detroit after having 10 sacks.

Suh has only missed a pair of games in his entire NFL career, which came back in 2011 when he was suspended for stomping on a Packers offensive lineman. Through the first 142 games of his career, he has 481 total tackles (107 tackles for loss) and 56 sacks.

The offseason is already underway as NFL work to build for the 2019 season and beyond. The NFL Combine from Indianapolis is set for Feb. 26 through March 4 before the start of free agency and the new league year on March 13. The 2019 NFL Draft kicks off from Nashville, Tennessee on April 25, 2019 and runs through April 27, 2019.The first round will be held on Thursday night, followed by the second and third round on Friday night and will conclude with rounds four through seven on Saturday.

Offseason Outlook: With Talib and Peters, Rams have answers at outside CB for 2019
Myles Simmons
https://www.therams.com/news/offsea...ters-rams-have-answers-at-outside-cb-for-2019

Over the last few years, the Rams have entered the offseason with questions at the cornerback position.

Back in the 2016 offseason, starters Janoris Jenkins and Trumaine Johnson were going to be unrestricted free agents. The Rams chose to place the franchise tag on Johnson, and Jenkins signed with the Giants in free agency.

On a one-year deal, Johnson again was approaching unrestricted free agency to start the 2017 offseason — and, again, the Rams placed the franchise tag on him. Los Angeles then signed Kayvon Webster to start opposite of Johnson in the first season under head coach Sean McVay and defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. With Johnson approaching free agency for the third year in a row, the Rams solved the seemingly ending questions by trading for both Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib. The deals were not official until the start of the league year in mid-March, but really, that solved the cornerbacks question for both 2018 and 2019.

When L.A. acquired Peters and Talib, both had two years remaining under their contracts. For Talib, that was the result of the six-year deal he signed with Denver as a free agent back in 2014. With Peters, that was from the fifth-year option the team had from the cornerback being a first-round pick back in 2015.

Peters picked off three passes — returning one for a touchdown — and had eight passes defensed in 2018. And in just regular-season games, Talib had an interception, five passes defensed, a forced fumble, and a 47-yard fumble recovery during the regular season. But Talib had a clear impact on the Rams defensive unit as a whole. Including playoffs, the Rams surrendered just 321 yards and 17.8 points per game with Talib. Without him, they gave up an average of 401 yards and 30.8 points per game. Clearly with both players manning the outside, the Rams are significantly better off.

Los Angeles also helped solve the cornerbacks question by re-signing slot corner Nickell Robey-Coleman to a three-year deal last March. Robey-Coleman spent the first four years of his career in Buffalo, before coming over to L.A. on a one-year deal in 2017 and excelling covering receivers in the slot — earning that three-year contract. Robey-Coleman now has two years remaining on that deal. In two seasons with the Rams, Robey-Coleman has played in 31 regular-season games — starting five — with three interceptions, 13 passes defensed, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

Los Angeles does have a few free agents at cornerback — Sam Shields will be unrestricted when the new league year begins, and Troy Hill will be a restricted free agent. But with Talib, Peters, and Robey-Coleman under contract for 2019, the Rams should be in good shape when it comes to their starters at the cornerback position.

The phase you can never have enough CBs. That said we need a talent to develop into a legit starter in 2020. Simply put, we will be adding 1-2 CBs this off season

I do not see a talent to be developas a legit starter either. Other than the 3 starters of Talib, NRC & Peters the only Rams corner signed to a contract this season is ex WWC UDFA Darious Williams. DW just signed a 3 yr ultra low-cost contract.

The Rams have 4 corners (UDFA Shields/ UDFA Hill/ UDFA Peterson & UDFA Hatfield) involved in free agency & do not have Ram contracts to play in 2019.

The Rams current CB back up Williams & possible other perspective resigns @ corners involved in free agency will ensure that they are forced to take the large Salary Cap hit of over $9 million on Peters. They do not have another starting prospect signed. Several outside corners need to be drafted in late April.

I really hope that Peterson is re-signed. He's an ERFA, and I still remember his performance in the 49er's game. Hatfield should be solid depth, and if Troy Hill is a RFA, I'd like him back as well. Shields can stay, if the price is right.

I agree that we probably need another corner, but I think that re-signing key players will only help.

I think they will all be resigned and someone will be brought in from the draft to compete with them.

I'd try to sign Terrell Suggs on a one year deal. He's 36 but still playing well. After watching him on GMFBI think he'd be a great veteran presence. His knowledge would be a welcome addition.

Quinn, Suggs, Paradis. Superbowl.

Quinn is over 30. So, he may not be overpriced and may take a discount for a chance to make it to a Superbowl. Ditto Suggs. Paradise will be 30 next year. I'd prefer a get at center.
