I feel bad for Bobby Evans on a personal level. It must be tough to be absolutely piled on like this.
But this is pro sports, so let's not fee too bad. He makes very good money to do what he does. His 4 year contract when he signed it included a signing bonus of $822,180, and average annual salary of $878,473. He's already earned millions. His base salary this year is $965,000. Last year it was $850,000. In 2020 it was $675,000. And there is no consequence to his poor performance, other than some pro sports team not winning as many games as it would like - which, in the big picture, is completely meaningless. And I'm a huge Rams fan!
True, Evans might never find another job in the NFL if his tape is poor enough. But he could retire tomorrow - at age 25! - with his millions of dollars and not worry about it. With several years of NFL experience under his belt, he could also easily get some low level football job, at a minimum, if he wanted to keep some cash flow while staying involved in the game - e.g. high school level o-line coaching gigs etc.
In his defence, I will say what I did yesterday - Evans is not a guard by nature. He's a tackle. He's playing out of position, which at the NFL level, is not easy to do. It's not as simple as some fans suggest. "Just slide him over!". Some tackles can do it. Many cannot. It's clear Evans cannot. He is in good company on this roster as Noteboom also looked awful at LG. The coaching staff needs to put Evans at LG out of his misery and bench him.
He has also regressed horribly since his rookie year, which I think says 2 negative things about the coaching staff.
For one, why are your young players going backwards in their development? Evans looked 100x better as a rookie and sophomore than he does today, and his pedigree is decent coming out of Oklahoma. He was a 3rd round draft pick that scouts generally thought had decent upset. What went wrong to allow him to nose-dive like this? Coaching has to take some blame here. I don't think I've ever seen such a young player fall apart like this without injuries etc. being involved.
For two, why keep trotting him out there when it is clear he is not up to the task? You can see from that interview he has less than 0 confidence right now - and the coaching staff has to take a huge share of the blame for that by letting this failed Evans at LG experiment continue. So much of sports is mental and about confidence. If Evans has none, and is only a depth player to start with, the current results should not be surprising.
