The Rams show patience when they see potential. They also no how to coach up a player.
It is interesting with McVay.
They are patient and he rewards time of service.
It is partly why (I assume) we saw obviously sub par o lineman get shots repeatedly when it appeared there were better, younger, players behind them.
So, I have no doubt Stetson is starting the year as the 2. He has put in the time and knows the offense better. The talent gap was apparent on Saturday. But, it will take time.
One thing that McSnead is good at is, over time, improving a position group.
Comparing the depth provided by Bennett and Simpson compared to Wolford and Perkins is a good example.

It's hard to keep everything in perspective when evaluating players in the season's first preseason game. I think that was overrated. They did have players that will see playing time this year. The Chiefs had first-round pick CB Mansoor Delane, and the Rams have their starting CB from last year on their roster. It was reported that the Chiefs played starters early.

Stetson Bennett vs Ty Simpson: Without replay, I thought Bennett threw behind receivers and lacked accuracy overall. He seemed to rush his passes. I watched last year's highlights from the Chargers game and he was doing the same with accuracy and decisions.

Everyone saw that Simpson was more accurate spinning the ball on target. He was most likely playing some lesser players early on and much lesser players as the game progressed. The big thing is he looked confident and capable. He got protection later that translated into more reads and downfield throws.

My doubts on Bennett being a capable backup are increasing.

TEs: Klare/Redman looked the part. Klare played inline, showing good hands. Redman showed good hands and the ability to get downfield from a wider set. Rams have to get him on the PS.

WRs: Pressley/CJ Daniels need to see more. Pressley made the catches and showed some quickness, while CJ made a nice catch. He wasn't targeted much. Hard to tell, but he seemed to be running shorter routes. We need to see more of both of these guys.

Hunter/Conners/Waters: Connors stole the show. He made a blitz pickup, caught the ball for 2 TDs. He looks like a multi-tool WB. Hunter showed a burst up the middle and outside. He also was stopped early on plays. Hard to tell if it was him or the blocking without replay. Waters had a couple of bursts through the line. He is a bigger back at around 220Lbs. We need to see them play more in the preseason.

It was hard for me to keep up with the defensive individuals. I didn't see much push from the line and they did get beat on the outside. Nick Anderson was around the ball. He made tackles; some were high tackles. He did get beat deep and the ball was dropped. He did recover some ground. We need to see more of him too.

On the screen pass both Ty Simpson & Dean Connors at the press conference gave shoutouts to the offensive linemen on that play, both #64 Austin Blaske & #63 Dylan McMahon made great blocks. For all of those, who want to talk up Willie Lampkin, remember, Rams poached Dylan McMahon from the Eagles practice squad. Besides a few errant snaps, I though McMahon had a good game at center plus was communicating very well with all the changes along the front.

Austin Blaske, who does have experience at LT, played the whole game and held up well. Besides the pressure on Bennett on the 3rd & goal play early, Blaske held up well and the offensive line as a whole with Bill Murray & Blake Hance did very well.

Also I have been very critical of Beaux Limmer ever since the whiff in Philadelphia, but today at RG, Limmer played his best game in years, so here is hope, Beaux in on the road to recovery.
Excited to see these guys next week, Chiefs have worst depth on Dline in the league so how they played and how Ty played were table stakes, gonna be real eager to see if they can match the performance next game.

Next game will be the New Orleans Saints and former DC Brandon John Staley. I am sure the Saints might play more of their regulars because 2nd preseason game is treated like the old 3rd preseason game, when they played 4. More like dress rehearsal.

That did take a long time. Horrible QBs

Lot’s of positive takeaways. GREAT first preseason game for many depth players.

Top tier;

Simpson
Anderson
Conners

Klare, Presley, and Waters showed too.

I see nothing special about Hunter in his game. I mean… What is his strongest attribute? Yeah, I don’t know either. I’d rather roll elsewhere.

Preseason is for over reactions....its all part of the fun.
The truth is there are only a handful of spots up for grabs this offseason.
A player like Conners is in a tough spot.
By not playing Rivers, McVay and has picked his top three backs. Conners is competing with a RB the Rams used a pick on. That doesn't guarantee the Rams will keep Hunter over Conners but it makes it tougher.
Stetson is the back up for now.
I don't know how long he can hold off Simpson but I think it is pretty clear Stetson will likely start the year as the 2.
As for Simpson, he looks the part for sure.
His arm is live and he moves well. Good technique and he went through progressions a couple of times very nicely.
But, no blitzing....an agreement between coaches I'm sure as neither team blitzed at all.
So, it was a fantastic start for Simpson and he looked good.
But, it will be a process for him.
I think the Rams are keeping 5 WRs I think. Smith and Daniels likely rounding out the five.
Redmon is a good TE and will likely be poached (along with Presley at WR) from the PS.
Keir Thomas is a player I really like and has been a tough luck player.
He seems to always flash a bit when he is in there.
If he lands on the PS again I imagine he won't last long there. Id still like to see him at the 5th Edge....although, the new undrafted kid stacked a handful of pressures and looked really, really good.
That game was a rare thing for a week 1 pre season game....it was entertaining and penalty wise, pretty clean for the Rams.
Good start to 2026!!

Mostly agree.

If they're only keeping 5 WRs, who's out between Whit and Mumpfield?

I like Thomas too but may like Wesley better.

Hunter? His speed and ability to break tackles.

He just needs better lateral quickness and vision. But, IMO, if the Rams ran more counter schemes I think we might be raving about him.

He stuck on the roster all last season so he's got something going for him. I just don't see any "wow" sides to his game.

I'm hopeful the Rams can get the Eagles 6th rounder OG Micah Morris if he doesn't make the final cut.

The problem for the Rams regarding Redmond is whether or not they can stash him on the PS. He might not even clear waivers.
I'd be surprised if they couldn't stash him on the practice squad. The league has been just flooded with TEs via the past couple draft classes.

Quite honestly Hunter is my least favorite Ram right now. Hope I'm wrong about him though!

I've watched every offensive snap Hunter has played in preseason offense both this year and last year. I have yet to think "wow" about any play he has made. Only decent play that made a slight impression has been this year when he showed decent speed on a ten yard chunk run.

Last year he had zero offensive snaps and 22 total snaps on ST, all in the first six weeks. To his credit he played 13 snaps on ST in the Carolina playoff game, I'd forgotten that.

Here's an interview with him from last year. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like he's sticking to the script and saying the right things, but he doesn't seem genuinely passionate or obsessed with football like MCvay prefers. Just kinda meh in his body language when he talks about "competition." With Kyren and Corum, their competitiveness jumps out at you.

I also wonder about Hunter's football IQ, since McVay gave him so few snaps even as a fourth rounder.

I predict Hunter will be a cut and then have a short NFL career. Seems like a workout warrior who doesn't have enough versatility to make it in the pros.
