He was fine in the NFC Championship game.. one TD and an 83 rating.

And.. again… Super Bowl.

Coaching matters. Scheme matters. Personnel matters.

ah, he was fine.

ok.

what's so extreme?

.
I never said he was “along for the ride.”
I’ll say what I always say about Goff.. he’s EXCELLENT in an offense that has great structure and protection and can make throws on time.
He is below-average, at best, out of structure.

Do you…. Remember the game? Had one, jaw-dropping throw to Cooks.
The Rams had to try a 57 yard FG in overtime after the D turned the ball over and the offense couldn’t move the ball, at all.

What are you even talking about?

Nah this is what you said.

"The idea that Goff lead them to relevance is doing some HEAVY lifting here."

Herbert plays defense?

Is Herbert not even partially responsible for the fact that the Chargers offense produced only an anemic 3 points in the 2nd half of that game? 27-0 at halftime. Lost 31-30 after four quarters.

On that final drive, Goff made two throws to Higbee with defenders very literally hanging all over him that put the Rams in position for that kick. He had the presence of mind in a pressure situation to complete those throws. Before that, he also helped the Rams overcome a 13-0 deficit, and led another drive at the end of regulation to put the Rams in position to tie the game.

These two responses, collectively are textbook examples of what some of us are talking about on this thread. You can't even hold Herbert responsible for failing to get a few extra points to win the game when they have a 27 point lead at halftime, and meanwhile won't give Goff a lick of credit for the clutch way he played in the NFCC at New Orleans. Nothing but excuses for Herbert's failures, little if any credit at all for Goff's successes. Zero logical consistency.

Anybody who says he was just fine playing in that hostile environment maybe doesn't remember the game.

Yes.

I said exactly that.

When they built the line & O, he succeeded.

They were a shit team that had a massive influx of talent.

And.. nowhere did I say he was along for the ride.

If you can’t see the space he’s in, fine. Nowhere have I denigrated or insulted Goff… I like the young man.

You want to call 3 throws a good game? Okay.

Of course Herbert plays some role. So do his coaches. So does the D.

I’m talking about QB play. Period. End of story, you don’t want to evaluate a guy outside of his offense & team? You go.

It was more than three throws. That final drive in regulation saw some good throws under duress as well. And overall it was very much some clutch play.

Still, you want to deflect for Herbert who can't even get a playoff W with a 27 point lead. Yes, the team around matters, but I always hear the criticism of Goff that "he can't elevate a team" and yet Herbert gets a pass when he can't play well enough to elevate his team to get in one year (2021 vs. Raiders, which included a critical 4th quarter INT) and then can't elevate his team to at least get more than 3 lousy second half points in an epic meltdown the next year. But yeah, let's give Herbert a pass and shit on Jared when his teams don't melt down a 27 point lead or choke away a chance for the playoffs.

I'll take Goff's 5-4 record in the playoffs over Herbert's 0-1 any day. The next big game Herbert wins will be his first.

Yes, I'm talking about QB play too. And one of the QBs in this discussion has a demonstrably and quantifiably better track record than the other one.

lol aren’t you the guy who said you have to look at the throws?
Anyone who boils down the NFC championship game to Goff’s passer rating either:
A) is a 49er fan
B) didn’t watch the game
Good grief

Got it. You didn’t watch the game.
Because anyone who watched the game knows how clutch Goff was getting the ball to Higbee twice in OT with guys draped all over him.
What a troll job

I think by now, after 8 years, few minds are gonna change, no matter the evidence.

It's amazing.

I remember after Muhammad Ali regained the heavyweight championship (very rare in those days) by knocking out the seemingly invincible George Foreman. Even after that there were still some die-hard critics who tried to rationalize away his success even when all evidence said the guy could actually fight pretty damn good.

Some people will just hold on for dear life to their preconceived notions, no matter the evidence to the contrary.

QBs are vastly overpaid.

You can say that about a lot of QBs that are paid what they are being paid.

The only one that is still active imho that is worth the second or third contract that they got is Mahomes.

Maybe Burrows - all others NO

That was my point in the Super Bowl winning QBs post. Stafford is easily worth the contract we paid him.

That doesn't mean paying any of those QBs is the right move - in fact it likely dooms them to not winning it all

I am confused by your analogy. Do you think any of us doubted Goff could have success with an elite roster around him when we literally saw that here?

I generally try to keep out of Goff threads because I end up in pointless arguments like the one i had in this one.

But when I saw the names derpert, Lamar and dak i couldn't control myself. The disrespect. I shouldn't care but I do.

There were a lot of people on this very board that said he’d be out of football within 2 years after the trade. Some said he was just a placeholder until Brad could build a team and then go get a QB. Even last year, people were saying that Hendon Hooker was the heir apparent.

Yes, I’m absolutely saying that because lots of people said he was finished at the time we traded him. I’m sure if I went back and dug up the threads from the times of the great Goff debates I’d find plenty of posts confirming that.

At this very moment Goff is at worse a top 8 NFL QB. IMO that puts him at the very good but not elite level. Detroit paid him like an elite QB so they must believe his play will continue to elevate.
