probably because he's been the starting qb for the cowboys for 4 years and they've paid him $2.7m in total. time to pay the piper.

.
And? He was picked in the 4th round for a reason.

and exactly that. once you become the starting qb your draft status goes out the window.

they had the chance to get him cheaper a year ago but wouldn't pull the trigger. somehow they're now shocked at how much it will cost to sign a qb. and dak has no incentive to sign long term with the cowboys next season as well. why would he when his franchise tag value will be $38m.

In your perfect world, what would the Cowboys do next? Realistically speaking, trading him is not an option

I think the Cowboys are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Dak Prescott is not an elite quarterback. He needs a good surrounding cast with good coaching to succeed. He really is not worth the money he is demanding. Last year he had an elite running back. Elite wide receiver. Pretty good offensive mind in Garrett. Good offensive line. And his numbers were good. But his team went 8-8. And that was after starting out 3-0 against 3 bad teams.

The thing is, can they do better if they let him walk after the season? Maybe not. They might have to pay elite money to a guy who isn't elite. Or they could end up doing worse. I know some people might say the same thing about Goff. But at least he's proven he's capable of making big plays in big games.

Off topic, I know, but it drives me crazy the way cowgirl fans call all of their players by their first name; Dak, Zeke, Amari...WTF? In most every other NFL town people are content to refer to them as Goff, Cupp, Donald, etc. Just another reason to despise that team and their annoying fan base.

Even if Dak is not their guy Dallas should have resigned him earlier before Wentz or before Goff. They would have saved money and bought time to find another QB. Dak can play bad for 3 Quarters but, manages to win games in the 4th Quarter. It's not easy finding a franchise QB.

Prescott has led the Cowboys to back-to-back fourth-quarter comebacks, with wins over the Giants in Week 17 and the Seahawks in the postseason. He has nine fourth-quarter comebacks and 15 game-winning drives in his three seasons.Jan 7, 2019
Team: Dallas Cowboys, Boys
Position: Quarterback

Dak Prescott now has led nine fourth-quarter comebacks ...

haha, fuck me. when a person brings up qbr what are we supposed to think about their comment?

Ha. Yeah, no kidding.

Hey Seth, But he ranked 23rd in QBR on rainy days, and generally a QBR in upper teens during stretches of less than 7hrs of sleep.

There: I contributed equally to the discussion, as Seth. (y)

Is this similar to the Redskins-Kirk Cousins situation?

yes.

the chiefs are giving mahommes $60m over the next 3 seasons.

if the cowboys have to tag dak again they will have to pay him $69m in the next 2 seasons.

of course the chiefs contract is really hard to get out of once it goes past 2 years. if they want to cut mahommes for any reason after the 2nd season his dead cap will be in the $40m to $50m range. and that's how much they'll have to pay him even if he's not on the team.

1) I think the thread title should be updated
2) This is about to be interesting because I think today is the deadline for the Cowboys to sign him long term

Today is the deadline.

Give me a good suggestion for the thread title change and I'll update it... keeping in mind that the deadline is 4pm est today.

How about, "Dak Prescott: the NFL's QB contract problem thread"?
Unless he signs today, this is going to be a real interesting one to follow

So at 4 PM today the new title will be outdated. If they don't get a long term deal he stays on the franchise tag all year.

Boy is this a conundrum for the Cowboys.
Personally, I find this part of the franchise deal to be stupid.
They should be able to sign him to a contract extension until his 1 year contract expires
