Rapoport lays out return timetable for Wentz after foot surgery Monday

Carson Wentz did a quick about-face and will undergo surgery to repair his injured foot.
Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich said Monday that the quarterback would have surgery to repair a broken bone in his foot today.
The initial timeframe for recovery is a wide window between 5-12 weeks, per Reich. The massive range which could have him back by the start of the regular season or out until late October underscores the uncertainty in rehab.
"The 5-12 week spectrum is real. We don't know," the coach said.
Reich noted that Wentz had an old foot injury dating back to perhaps high school, according to doctors, and over time the broken bone came loose, causing pain. The surgery will remove the bone.
The decision to undergo surgery came a day after the Colts QB planned to try rest and rehab instead of a procedure. Less than 24 hours later, Wentz reversed course. The quarterback suffered the injury Thursday last week and met with foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson to determine the course of action.
The Colts traded a 2021 third-round pick and a 2022 conditional 2nd-round pick to Philadelphia in exchange for Wentz this offseason. The conditions of the 2022 selection becoming a first-rounder entail Wentz playing 75 percent of the Colts snaps in 2021 or playing 70 percent of the snaps and Indy making the playoffs. If he's out the full 12 weeks, that would put a first-round pick being sent the Eagles' way in jeopardy.

Indianapolis put a load of faith in Wentz returning to form under Reich after a disastrous 2020 campaign. That faith has already hit a roadblock. The 28-year-old has missed 13 games in his career due to injury, including playoffs, and could add to that total in 2021.

This was an old injury for what it's worth. It just got worse. Might have started in high school. Crazy stuff for Wentz.

I talk to an Eagles fan I see at work. He is really bummed out about the trade of Wentz. Kinda like how many here feel about Goff.

I don't wish Wentz any ill will and hope he gets back soon. If he misses the Hags game then hope he missed the Rams game. No matter how you view Wentz he will always be compared to Goff. Even though both players have been traded away it is still interesting to see how the rest of their careers play out.

One thing for sure is Goff has stayed much healthier than Wentz. I thought the Eagles drafting Hurts was a smart move even if Eagle fans and media thought the opposite.

Mr. Glass kept looking for his opposite. He could saved himself a ton of time and found his equal in Philadelphia:)

They just lost Nelson to the same surgery. Damn. If the Titans play this right they'll have the division sewn up before the Colts get them back. It's a shame too, that matchup between the Titans & Colts looked like one of this year's best rivalries with two stacked rosters.

The Titans are week 8, Oct-31. They have time to get these guys back, if they don’t fall behind too much.

Yea that’s some hard luck.

week2 our #1 defense vs a backup QB and A backup guard trying to block Donald.

At this moment I feel no mercy.

Interesting thought. What if Wentz came in and lit it up early like he did in Philly. Would that have been enough to save Fish's job resulting in our missing out on hiring McVay?

How big of a bullet would that have been?

Eagles are laughing their asses off right now. I think Wentz with Reich as his gameplanner will be a competitive QB but right now the Colts GM is probably wondering if maybe he'll be able to keep that first round pick and if so he might need to use it on a new QB. There was a games played attachment to the deal iirc.

Wanted to mark this as inappropriate for giving me such a horrible vision of what may have been. A version of It's a Wonderful Life that some people should watch to appreciate today lol.

Legit thought but I question whether Wentz could have ‘lit it up’ under Fisher, with the Rams.

I always thought Wentz was set up to succeed in Philadelphia, while Goff was going up against a stacked deck in 2016.

The Eagles had a head coach (Pederson) with an offensive background, who was a long-time backup QB in the NFL. His Offensive Coordinator (Reich) was also an experienced NFL coach and had also played QB in the League for a long time. Even his QB-coach (John DeFillipo) was an experienced and well regarded NFL coach.

That’s a lot!

What did Goff have in 2016? A defensive-minded head coach, a first-time offensive coordinator (Boras) and a QB coach (Weinke) who had one year of experience under his belt. I don’t believe Boras has served as an OC since then, and I don’t think Weinke has held the same role in the NFL.

That was NOT a lot.

The magic number of games is 6. If Wentz misses 6 games they keep their first round pick. I think that's important because they're going to make the playoffs so they have to be over 30% missed (5 games puts them at 29%).

Now assume that Wentz is ready to play in say week 3 which is earlier than expected. Do you tell him to chill out and "we're gonna get you fully back before you step on the field" and then make sure he doesn't play until week 7?

Answer probably has to do with standings and how far behind Tennessee they are. But it's interesting.
