Lots of talk about Shelton and getting a center to replace him, thought we could have it's own thread. I think people remember Shelton at times getting bull rushed and that skews how they feel about him. Also, I think people have seen what a top 3 center in the league can do and it's pretty sexy to think about. There's just a huge variance between the two.

The thing is, center is paid the least of the Oline starters league wide because generally they're easy to find in the draft as you don't need them to be as strong or athletic as guards or tackles who typically need to block one on one more and have more movement responsibilities. Generally teams feel like they can get away with less athletic talent at the position but the predominate characteristic is smarts as they're often responsible for line calls, reading the defense and line communication.

They're the conductor, maybe not talented enough to play the cello at the highest rate but they need to know how it's played and where the musician needs to get to and what cadence it takes.

All that being said, I think there's some issues with assessing how well Coleman did this year (and even going back to 2023). In 2023 we had a top line, the line regressed in 2024 (Shelton was gone to the Bears) and the line was great in 2025. One of the biggest changes (I concede not the only) of course was the addition and subtraction of Shelton during that time. I suspect that his defensive ID is great (though it seems like that's a shared duty between him and Stafford), his communication is top notch and his physical skills are underrated. Case in point:

Stats aren't everything but I think there needs to be a really great argument to replace him given the performance of the line and what these stats show (anyone got some on his run blocking rate). We do probably need to look for his replacement though in this draft... I'd be curious to get a look at Limmer next camp as he had some more time to learn and maybe the mental part for him has developed more. He absolutely has plus physical skills at the position.

Also, FWIW NextGen seems to be the superior stat site to PFF.

The only thing required to replace him is the desire to buy longterm on an upgrade. And there's an upgrade available in FA.

But if you want to argue that Shelton is some worldbeater at Center, have fun with that.

I think the more interesting conversation is the fact we're in a window right now where the Rams are at a bit of a crossroads with their OL. 4/5 of the unit being pending FAs. The one signed player being a dude who had blood clots. And they haven't been particularly great at drafting the OL.

Yeah they have a huge challenge when it comes to both the offensive and defensive lines. We're probably gonna have to let some guys walk.

As far as the offensive line though, Avila, Jackson, Shelton, and McClendon are all home grown talents. I think that's pretty impressive that they've found 4 guys who can play and were able to get Dotson as a cast off.

Shelton did much better than I expected, but we can still do better. Would love to get someone in the draft to learn from him and hopefully take over late this coming year or to start the next.

There's so many more important needs that the Rams have to hit on to have the chance to even get back to the NFCC game. Center isn't one of them. While Shelton isn't a world beater he's definitely a good center, I'd say around 10th in the NFL, which a lot of teams would kill for.
I'm all for drafting a guy for depth, but don't forget we still have Limmer on the roster who held his own his rookie year.

Shelton is a rag doll when he goes against 300+ NT's like Vita Vea. If it wasn't for Avila and Dotson covering for him, Stafford would probably still be in a hospital.

LOL... Vita Vea throws everyone around like they're rag dolls. Shelton's ok. If a guard has to double team the Nose Tackle... Shelton will let them know that. He certainly won't let them run past him like Limmer did in the playoff game against the Eagles.

On a side note... I was co-blaming Dotson on that play when Jalen Carter ran right by both of them but, in retrospect, I guess McVay blamed it all on Limmer. And what the hell happened to Limmer anyway... nothing above the shoulders? Can he develop so we don't have to draft a center this year? Only McVay and Snead know for sure.

The team was much better with Shelton in the pivot especially with the regression of Beaux Limmer. Draft Pat Coogan out of Indiana and have him battle Shelton. Coogan does everything well at center when he was at Notre Dame & Indiana.

If Coogan beats out Shelton, then Shelton is the first interior OL off the bench and that is just fine IMHO.

I'm not opposed to an upgrade, but it does need to be acknowledged that, while Shelton is no individual world beater, he is a master of the line calls and was a critical part of the OL returning to a top 3 unit.

I also challenge the assertion that the Rams haven't been particularly great at drafting the OL. Their strategy has largley been to draft them in later rounds and develop them over a number of years. That has been very successful. AJ and McClendon are enough evidence to establish that.

The one early pick in Avila is at worst a wash - he's not been wildly successful but he's also not a failed pick.
