So Matthews worth letting go over a Floyd who is just about ranked as bad and paying him 2.5 the amount we pay Matthews? Really?

Floyd can at least set the edge consistently and drop into coverage. He's versatile and can play OLB, ILB, and even some 4-3 DE at times. Since he was released by the Bears, he costs nothing in terms of compensatory picks. He was a top ten pick once upon a time, and produced in his first year.

This is a buy-low contract for only one year. We're not risking anything by this signing, much like we risked nothing with Fowler.

Ever heard of Obo (hint: he's a guy we drafted for that role)? Ever hear of Ebukam (same as previous)? What about that Polite guy who we took a nearly risk free flyer on?

Young players can get better with more experience. And old players like Matthew do decline with age. And I'll trust Staley's judgment over yours. He wasn't brought in to keep everything the same as last year.

The only thing that I have hope for is OBO and we just f’d that up by signing some 10 mill below average cast off.

I heard this before, “ I’ll trust Fishers judgement over yours”. Yep, that train of thought works out well doesn’t it?

It's a one year deal, dude. You act like losing Matthews is the worst thing that could have possibly happened to our defense.

Matthews had 8 sacks last year. Floyd has never had 8 sacks in a season in his career. I'd rein in your expectations slightly
Note those 8 sacks only 3.5 less than Fowler and Mathews was out of a bit with broken jaw so probably he would had double digit sacks.

That aging veteran got 8 sacks last year and missed time with a broken jaw.

Floyd on the other hand had 7 sacks the last 2 years and started all 32 games.

This is a trash move. Very disappointed in this move.
Other than the 8 sacks,he just wasnt that good.

Throw in Floyd had 2 monsters on the DL that would hold alot of attention and still he didn't get sacks

Yeah, I'm not so sure about that. About all Matthews has on those guys at this point is experience. And Ebukam is better against the run.

at 3.75 mil bring him in on passing downs only. I don't know if that slight amount of money could be spent more wisely.

Part of that is how they played him. He's not the OLB who gets all the sacks; he was played because he's a great run-stopper who can cover tight ends and running backs like a gazelle. He's a moveable chess piece, only on defense.

Imagine someone being rated that good against the run and being overall rated at 69.8 overall. How bad is he at pass? That in my eyes isn’t worth 10 mill. And not worth picking up.

Again, it's a buy-low contract for only a year with no compensatory pick wasted because of it. Fowler was the same way, and we saw how that went.

I was/am pretty indifferent to Clay.

On the one hand, he was still decent at rushing the passer, and could provide mentor-ship in an otherwise young LB room.

On the other hand, he was pretty bad against the run and setting the edge. It seemed half the time he didn't even want to fake an interest in tackling, instead trying to strip the ball out (which he almost never did successfully).

In the end, the Rams opted to move on and take the cap space. Fair enough. I was fine with him staying but leaned slightly towards taking the cap space, myself.

Sacks? yes those are great. But I also like when my team wins games and seeing them in the post season. Getting gashed over & over because our run defense was ranked 31st last year was a pretty good reason why our season ended early.
The moves to get Floyd and A'Shawn, and releasing OLB's and ILB's who aren't good at run D is just good team management. It'd be great if every move we made saved us money and got us more comp picks but I'd really like it if the Rams made it back to the post season. And we're certainly not beating teams like the Ravens or Niners with a 31st ranked run D.

Matthews was showing his age. I thought it was 50/50 he be cut. It's time to sign with another team if he wants to or retire if he wants to A lot of the sacks were coverage and clean up sacks. It is time for the young guys to step up.

Just curious but have the ever been used in the same defense in the same way at the same position and playing right behind Aaron Donald? OK I'll keep my opinion then.

The Rams actually got maximum effort per snap.

Can he duplicate that next year?
Doubtful.
