Worst thing a team can do is knee jerk react after a bad loss. You get back to work on what made you a good team. Have everyone look in the mirror and ask themselves if maybe they took this game for granted. The Cardinals have a good team now. A real contender for the playoffs at least. Could be more. All McVay has to do is get these guys to stop listening to all the media talk about how great they are. No one is that much greater than everyone else in the NFL.
I agree with everything you say except bend but don't break and letting the little QB outside constantantly.

Long jr. shouldn't be on the field period. Ever. He is targeted on third down and either gets run over or gives up a free reception for the 1st down or TD. Teams are not stupid, they will target your weakest link. Your 3rd CB cannot be this weak. It destroys the integrity of the defense.

Time to cut bait ASAP.

I hope there's some changes coming in the secondary. Taylor Rapp is a garbage deep safety, he has been and still is...I have no idea why Rapp/Scott get so many snaps at deep safety with so much depth at the position...

All McVay needs to do is look at the squatters in their house and see how defense is supposed to be played. It’s not like we didn’t see it with Staley last year.

Morris should have been required to watch that game tonight.

Get aggressive, fuck that star bullshit, that is not why Ramsey was brought in.

We would have had more pressures and sacks against a QB that isn't as mobile as Murray.

Murray was just a bit too fast last game, fraction of a second. It’s early in the season, he’s moving real good right now.

Not many a quick as Murray. Then again, we likely see Trey Lance and Lamar Jackson later this year. :dizzy:

Speaking of something Physical going on. Some of his throws were so far off, including the under throw, it looked as if he has something wrong with his hand. He hit his thumb in camp and then in the Colt game. Or maybe he was doing his no look and was way off this time? It's just hard to believe his throws could be so far off as that one to Kupp down the sideline and 5ft over his head or the one to Kupp down the seem that hit the ground 2 ft in front of him. Dude was not just off. He was way off. Plus he ran a lot more. Like he didn't trust his throws.
100% agree.

I know this is dont matter now but could you imagine if we could have kept Staley for one more year with the addition of Stafford. 1 year off timing wise. Shucks. Look at the immediate impact Staley and Stafford have made.

IF, You were Sean McVay what changes would you be considering making to the your Offense and Defense (If, Any)? While, I don’t think a coach needs to over react due to one loss BUT to me this loss was quite disturbing!! I really think he needs to consider making some DB adjustments and hopefully try to find the Matt Stafford that he traded for and not the QB that played today (Let’s hope he got his BAD GAME FOR SEASON out of his system today!!)!!
First I didn’t see the game & Freaking
Aesthetic The Rams lost. I LMAO at Questions like this actually.

-Back to The Sky is falling against Tampa Bay to Changes & how bad this team looks.

Les Snead’s interview a long with Mcvay puts things in perspective.I like where The Rams are at. The Bright Spot & Bonifay’d was actually right in some sense. RR31 is going to be good. I like what I see & Snead talks about when a player should start to get more playing time.

The Rams are So Focused in on Thursday & a Road Victory against Seattle would mean more to The Rams than a lose to Arizona at home.Especially during the short week, because the lose doesn’t hurt as long & gives The Rams a positive feeling during the long week & time off.
I think changes come after that, which keeps everything ground & at a calm. Players have to proof themselves & hard work pays off. You always hope for positives in change.

Arizona win or lose against SF ? To answer the question? I’m in the books as saying F” Shanahan!! The Rams just need to take care of there business.Either way a Rams VICTORY Thursday is the Biggest change from Sunday’s game. Staying healthy through the break.

Two questions I would pose to McVay are:

#1: If this is the scheme Morris said he was going to install in the interview process why would you hire him in the first place? Especially after the success you had last year under Staley’s scheme.

#2: It seems like you are abandoning the run game-even when it’s working-and relying on Stafford to do too much. Are you trying too hard to highlight Stafford to justify pounding the table to trade Goff?
The star position and all that was cooked up by Staley. So all the calls I am sure are from the playbook the prob is he has no feel on the calls in real time and putting it together.

There is probably dropoff on how it is being taught too which affects players being able to play fast. And that is not even getting into whether he simplified the keys which I heard a rumor of a while back.

That’s because Long plays so far off the receivers that no one realizes that was his man they threw to.

Remember Travis Fisher during the Martz days? Never missed a tackle after the 25 yard cushion he gave receivers.

Gave myself a full day before posting after that. Re-watched a little and read a little and listened to the 11 Personnel podcast.
Where I'm at after that game is that the offense will be fine. That was just one of those out-of-synch off days and shit happens. My single biggest issue with the offense is when McVay goes completely away from the run when it's clearly working. Rich Hammond is dead on with his critique of that. I just think McVay outthinks himself.
The other big issue I have with McVay is his 4th down approach. His instincts on when to go for it seem to be off and, as such, he should probably step back and use the analytics on it a little more.
While not truly a "4th down issue".. I'm also bugged by this scenario.. 3rd and 4 in Cards territory in the 3rd... you're behind.. and running the ball well.. then pass and try a FG. I just felt like that's a 4 down situation and you run on 3rd.. pick up at least a couple of yards, if not the first and go for a shorter 4th down. Meh. I love McVay and don't want any other coach, but still think he needs some growth, in-game.

The defense, it seems, has some actual issues, as many of you have pointed out. Through 3 games, I was willing to step back and see how they grew into the season, but it's not looking great.

-The star position was in Staley's D and Ramsey played it last year, though not as much. To me, the problem isn't with that, it's that Long is so clearly a liability. I'm really disappointed in where he's at and think I was wrong believing he could be a consistent outside corner. He's a 3rd corner at best and best used in the slot, it looks like.
-Rapp just ain't growing in the pass game. Bummer.
-I'm baffled as to why we're not seeing any Burgess and Rochelle. The fact they're not playing worries me a little. The Rams desperately need Rochelle's size at corner. It was kinda interesting hearing Rodrugue say that Burgess is working with the corners a lot in practice. Bottom line? If Long is consistently out there, teams are consistently going to target him.
-I think the front 7 are actually fine. Robinson and Gaines and SJD have taken up Brockers snaps and are outplaying him this year. Losing Hollins hurts. Obo was better than I hoped for and Lewis was actually good. I have no idea how long he lasts taking that many snaps.

The offense just needs to execute. The Oline was really good, again. They need to not abandon the run. Even though he fumbled, you've got to get Michel in there if you're worried about too many carries for Henderson. Again, the offense will be fine.

The D? One MAJOR personnel issue in Long. MAJOR. One concerning issue in Rapp. And still concern over whether Morris can get the job done.
The most immediate fix would seem to be either getting Rochelle in for Long, or to greatly reduce the amount Ramsey plays the "Star" position.

The offense was self-inflicted and there was nothing structural/foundational to be worried about, imo.
The defense is another story.

Do Rams need to bench a cornerback and move Jalen Ramsey back outside?

David Long and Darious Williams haven’t had the seasons anyone was hoping for so far

By Kenneth Arthur@KennethArthuRS Oct 5, 2021

The Los Angeles Rams had one of the NFL’s best pass defenses of 2020, ranking first in passing yards, passing touchdowns, and yards per pass attempt allowed. This helped the Rams rank first in points and total yards allowed too and it got defensive coordinator Brandon Staley interviews with virtually every team that had a head coach opening. Staley went to the LA Chargers — conveniently the best gig was also in the same home stadium — and the Rams had to find a new defensive coordinator.

Is that the reason why the LA Rams now rank 25th in passing yards and 27th in total yards allowed?

Raheem Morris didn’t have much prior experience as a defensive coordinator prior to 2021, but he did have a long resume as an NFL assistant coach, with a few years of running the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as well. Morris vowed to keep around a lot of what Staley did, including moving Jalen Ramsey into the “Star” role, and because of that Ramsey has spent the majority of his snaps this season playing in the slot.

According to Next Gen Stats, Ramsey is playing the slot in 56% of the snaps in 2021, which is more than 3x higher his snap% of 2020, and more than 5x what it was in 2019.

If Ramsey is the NFL’s best cornerback, should he be spending that much time in the slot?

In the Rams’ 37-20 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 4, Sports Radar tracked Ramsey with four targets, allowing one 18-yard completion over the middle of the field to DeAndre Hopkins. But Ramsey also got the better of Hopkins on a number of plays, when he was in coverage on Hopkins, of course. David Long, Jr. had no such luck.

Long was said to be targeted six times, allowing six completions for 92 yards, including a touchdown by A.J. Green that posterized the third-year cornerback. Through four games, Long has now been the nearest corner on 19 attempts, allowing 13 receptions for 171 yards.

But Ramsey has been the nearest corner on 26 throws, allowing 15 receptions for 126 yards, an average of 4.8 yards per target.

Long is allowing 9.0 yards per target.

The third option, Darious Williams, may also not be playing in his best position anymore. Though Williams has been more of a shutdown corner during the first year-and-a-half of sharing the field with Ramsey, quarterbacks are not afraid to go after him in 2021.

Screenshot_2021_10_05_095839.png

Williams has allowed 21 completions on 29 near-targets, giving up 182 yards with one touchdown and 6.3 yards per target. Williams has allowed 76 yards after the catch, which is already nearly half-as-much as the 155 YAC that he allowed in 16 games last season. In the most recent episode of The Ringer NFL Show, Benjamin Solak specifically called out Darious Williams as the biggest reason for the secondary’s downfall in the first month of the year, which is surprisingly good news for David Long to not be mentioned.

The question for us now is: Should Raheem Morris have kept this much of Staley’s system or is that simply a system best meant for Staley? Should Jalen Ramsey be spending so much time in the slot, with David Long and Darious Williams on the outside, or is he too valuable to not just be covering an opposing team’s best player for the entire game? Ramsey’s never had such a good argument for Defensive Player of the Year before and yet somehow that might also mean that LA’s pass defense is worse than it could be if he wasn’t in the Star.

Should Morris keep things the same or is it time to shift around these names in the defensive backfield? Again.

One thought for all... If Rapp needs to be moved into a more limited roll.. what's the corresponding move? Reed is a nice player, but, to me, he's more like Rapp than he's not. I would think you would need to have Fuller move down and someone else be able to play high? Does that mean Nick Scott? Burgess? Kind of a tough situation.

Best 5 should play in this Ram secondary.

Long does not appear to be among the best five. He was a stellar man coverage outside CB in college but it’s not translating well to the NFL.

QB’s are just feasting on him, yet Morris stubbornly refuses to make a change in either player or scheme. I refer you to Einstein’s definition of insanity, y’all.

Look, it’s not as if Morris doesn’t have other options. I would give Rochell snaps and sit Long.

Replace Rapp with Burgess, if healthy, and Hughes if not. Rapp was drafted by Wade for a different D and now Morris is trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. There’s that Einstein definition thing again.

If I can see this, you know that the other players see it, too. That’s not good for morale.

like I said, best 5 should play in this secondary. Don’t overthink this, Morris.

Yeah, that about sums it up like @BonifayRam was mentioning yesterday, move Fuller to Rapp's spot where he excelled last year and have someone with more range man the other safety. At the moment the only safety we have with speed is Burgess but that's if he fully recovered from last year. His complete lack of playing time makes me wonder if he has. Scott has speed too but has never been trusted in a heavy role where at least Burgess seemed to be a quick favorite of Staley's last year albeit briefly before injury took him out. Reed seems to be everyone's favorite savior but can't get himself off the practice squad. He does have better speed than Rapp or Fuller though.

Obviously, speed isn't everything... i'd just kill for better reactions, instincts, and angles at this point. Would be really nice to add a little speed though.

Put Ramsey back on the outside... with him and Williams on lockdown duty add some better speed and contain practices to keep the rest of the plays in the middle of the field and we at least keep stuff under control if we're going to concede yardage.

Don't worry, no one will hire Morris away at the end of this season. :bigcry:

There is something fundamentally wrong when Morris uses his elite CB in low percentage blitzes instead of taking away the QB's best weapon. It's simply the arrogance of a DC who hasn't done his film work on the opposing QB. Murray is a two-read QB. Take away his first read, i.e. Hopkins on the vast majority of his plays is huge in defending the Cards. Simple film work would show that.

But it's not only this game. This defense has sucked in every game and made to look better simply by Stafford outscoring the opposition. For god sake I've been saying since game one that if the Rams get behind or Stafford has a bad game, the defense will fold.

This is no different than watching Kromer's inept coaching of the OL. People were blaming the players and everything else except the root cause. This is simply a DC who doesn't understand he has elite talent on this roster if he simply uses it correctly. Like the OL a coaching change is required or the coach must change his scheme and admit he's wrong. What makes this so stupid is that Morris was handed the blueprint but his ego wouldn't allow him to simply build upon what Staley had installed.

All you need to do is look at the Charger game on Monday to see the difference Staley is making with less talent. His pre-snap disguises allowed his pass rush to make a huge difference. Morris in his arrogance has eliminated that from the defensive scheme because he didn't understand how to use it and never took the time to study it.

Staley was facing a strong run attack with the Raiders. He played his defense with 6-7 in the box for most of the game. His LBs would drop to cover that short zone taking away Carr's quick options. Staley allows his defense to read and anticipate the play allowing them to play faster not as Merlin pointed out flat-footed. Drop, read, react is a loser scheme. It's why so many teams dropped zone defenses. Teams are now beginning to use zone again but now it's aggressively played.

Morris' scheme is obsolete and is a complete loser as demonstrated over the past 4 games. Morris has returned the level of play of this defense back to what it was before Staley, i.e. if the offense can't outscore the opposition the Rams lose. There is only one option for McVay. Demand that Morris reinstalls Staley's scheme or fire his ass. Morris is a fool to think stats don't matter. The fact that his scheme is so freaking far behind the level of play established by Staley with lesser players is testimony that can't be ignored. The Rams are in win now mode. To allow Morris to piss it all away is beyond belief.

Look at how upgrading the OL coaching has made the same unit that floundered into one of the better units in the NFL. Look how Staley took a middle of the road defense and made it into the best in the NFL. Now Morris has taken that same defense and made them average. WTF? The remedy is clear. Either force Morris to abandon his foolish ego driven scheme and return to the scheme that was proven to work, or fire his ass. I have no problem with moving Ramsey around if he's taking away their best receiver. But to use him like a blitzing LB is stupid beyond belief. He's weakening his secondary for a low percentage play. It's pure BULLSHIT.

Why is Rapp looking so weak? Because he's being played like a LB instead of the SS he is. Rapp's strength is play recognition. Morris isn't playing to his personnel's strength and it's been proven by the results. His scheme is allowing over 71% completion rates. I don't freaking care what Morris thinks, but that is completely unacceptable compared with 63% last year.

Run defense is equally downgraded. Staley's unit gave up 3.8 YPC and Morris is allowing 4.7 YPC. Why? Because there's only the DL defending the first 5 yards as everyone is dropping back 7+ yds to keep everything in front of them. WTF? Morris said he doesn't care about stats only results. Well his stats stink and the results stink just as much. FIRE MORRIS
