I have read extensively on what made Staley's defense innovative and effective THAT is the entire point of this whole comment thread. I don't think most posters understand what they are saying when they essentially say be more like Staley.

I can't actually confirm or deny this off the top of my head to say he has not run it at all this year.

Well Hollins hardly played prior to this year so anything he does can be categorized as something Staley never did.

I didn't. Again I asked a poster to elaborate what coverages/pressures he was refereeing to.

Quick excerpt:

"Staley said he created the “star” position, brought over from his days as defensive coordinator at Division III John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he also played quarterback. The new role is a hybrid defensive back position like a slot defender that places Ramsey closer to the line of scrimmage so he can better impact the game."

You're wrong here.

Directly from Staley himself:

“It’s a position that kind of combines several different skillsets,” Staley said. “You’re a little bit of a corner, you’re a little bit of a safety, a little bit of a linebacker -- inside linebacker and outside linebacker because you’re kind of a rusher too.

A new coach running new concepts is not some groundbreaking ideal. I again was asking if the poster in question could identify what he was claiming or simply was attributing Morris success to Staley while the blame is only on Morris. It's an important distinction IMO because every time we give up a big play we can just default on "shoulda ran a Staley concept" when most don't even know what that means and its not like his concepts are perfect anyway....they too get beat.

I'm 99% sure you just said this and didn't research it so not even going to go there.

No that's just your conjecture.

In regards to Hollins, I'm talking less about the actual player and more about the OLB position as a whole.

Nice write up tho, You're correct about the Ramsey concept Star position. Kudos

So the refs are at least supposed to call the obvious holds. I think the refs just don't look in his direction cause they don't want to see it.
I think we should call them Shultz instead of Refs.

Dump offs - Stafford missed a wide open Higbee then a wide open Kupp on third down underneath resulting in punts. He tried throwing the longer verticals and missed. Sometimes just take the underneath stuff. Our first half started as punt punt interception and punt. Two were a result of not taking the underneath throw, one was because of a bonehead interception and the other because Mcvay didn't give us a chance on third and 10 and elected to run the ball...

Stafford heats up - After two bad throws in a row - the last one way over Woods head on a deep in - Stafford woke up on the deep throw to DJack. It was lights out after this. The throw was underthrown but the pressure had arrived and he had to get it out. Adams had no chance of turning around so it was perfectly placed. I wonder if they work on these purposeful underthrows or Stafford just felt the play seeing that Adams would not be able to stop in time to get back and make a play. Either way Stafford was lights out after that...
Would like to see more underneath options, reads and completions on third down. It's great to make a play downfield but the goal at hand on third down should be the highest percentage likely completion that moves the chains.

Agree that the completion on the underthrow to Jackson was outstanding, and may likely have been intentional, but in general would prefer to see some deep passes leading DJax that he can catch in stride.

The deep throws to DJax are game changing plays. Seems like this combo of Stafford to DJax has more to offer than we've seen so far, and that's a good sign.

Bro, I went back and re-read your original post. It must have been a combination of the whiskey and sleep deprivation, but I totally mis-read that last night.

I thought you said Stafford was outplayed by both Wilson and Geno LOL
Not sure who outplayed who. Personally I'm just glad we didn't have to deal with Wilson in the 4th quarter. Despite our success against Seattle he's too good at converting long TDs out of nothing.

Have to give Geno Smith credit. He looked great, making plays and keeping Seattle in the game. Maybe we should have traded for him!! (As our backup of course.)

Staley’s genius was dictating where the opposing offense went with the ball amidst disguising his true defense with pre snap looks that we’re not indicative of post snap coverages.
This imo is the key. It's a great scheme when properly executed. But imo to make it work requires dialed in adjustments and calls throughout the game and on a play by play basis. Staley is a defensive genius who made that happen with the Rams.

Still too early imo to tell whether Morris can get this D dialed in at a high level. New coach, new players, four games.

I think Morris is feeling his way. He is prepared to make changes. Putting in Rochelle as an inexperienced rookie was not exactly playing it safe. Clearly there will be more adjustments.

You can be certain that Morris and McVay see the same things we do, but with ten times more granularity. They now have a little break and three non-division games to pull this D together.

# 3 that oline just keeps amazing me in fact they maybe getting better every week.
# 6 how do we block a punt and lose 70 yards just don't understand.

:beer2: iamme.

Yeah… I’m loving this oline. Stafford moves in sync with these guys. Its awesome!

I still still can’t wrap my head around that 2x punt. Something wrong when you block a punt… and it’s not a positive. Like… huh?

Matthew Stafford made this perfect no-look pass seem way too easy

Cameron DaSilva

Rams fans have learned in just five games that Matthew Stafford can make every throw in the book. He can even make the ones where he’s not looking at his intended receiver.

Very quietly, Stafford has become a master of the no-look pass...
Look, everyone is thrilled with Stafford, including his leadership, recognition of defenses, and ability to make plays downfield.

But Stafford has made errant throws too. Stafford himself said he went through his reads too quickly at the beginning of the game. What the Rams need from Stafford going forward is more consistency.

Imo this is just part of the offense coming together. Stafford is still becoming comfortable with all his receivers and McVay is still getting the play calling dialed in.

Rams now have a downfield passing game, a much improved oline, and a very effective running game. The potential of this offense is sky high if we can put the pieces together with the best balance and execute consistently.

Very much agree with this. The scheme and concepts are only half the battle it’s calling the right play at the right time which is something Staley was great at

I love that he is an actual analyst/show host who has the money and the tools to put together high quality video cut ups and breakdowns... And yet he records his computer screen from his phone like some 65 year old grandparent trying to send videos to his grandkids to study before their peewee game.
Yeah and what I love about him is he really seems to get joy from looking at tape. Always a great listen to queue up one of his segments.
