If the Los Angeles Rams were looking for a starting point in their negotiations with Jared Goff, they just got it.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed Carson Wentz to a four-year, $128 million extension with a whopping $107 million guaranteed. That average of $32 million per year is one of the most notable figures because it’s highly unlikely Goff will take less than that when he signs his extension with the Rams.

Inhabit;ord=4009985117646.9683;dc_seg=756255014

As former agent Joel Corry of CBS Sports points out, Goff and Wentz are represented by the same agency, Rep 1 Sports. That will undoubtedly be a factor in Goff’s contract discussions with the Rams front office because it’s difficult to see his agent getting him less than Wentz received.

Wentz’s contract is massive, there’s no denying that. Earning $32 million per year, he’s now the fourth-highest-paid quarterback in the NFL behind only Russell Wilson, Ben Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers. Matt Ryan is close behind at $30 million annually.

The question now isn’t whether Goff will top Ryan and Wentz. It’s whether he’ll surpass Rodgers, Wilson and Roethlisberger. They all have better resumes, obviously, having won Super Bowls and made more Pro Bowls than Goff. But when it comes to quarterback contracts, it’s as much about timing as it is numbers. Of course, that doesn’t mean Marcus Mariota should get more than Goff and Wentz simply by signing after those two quarterbacks, but timing means a lot in these discussions.

Because the Rams are waiting to sign Goff until after Wentz signed his deal, the price likely went up. Had they gotten ahead of the Eagles, they could’ve been the ones setting the floor at $32 million per year rather than letting Philadelphia set it.

All things considered, though, the Rams should feel good about what the Eagles gave Wentz. He didn’t break the bank and sign a deal richer than those of Rodgers, Roethlisberger or Wilson. Some believed he might at least surpass Rodgers’ salary. He didn’t, and that’s good news for the Rams when it comes to their talks with Goff.

In the end, waiting to sign Goff after Wentz got his extension won’t be a bad thing for the Rams, considering it won’t make a huge difference. Over The Cap’s Jason Fitzgerald projects Goff will get $33 million per year with Dak Prescott coming in slightly below Wentz’s mark at $31 million.

What will change things a bit is if Prescott gets more than Wentz. That scenario would absolutely raise the price for Goff and the Rams, potentially beyond Rodgers’ $33.5 million-per-year mark. With Goff having one more year left on his contract than Prescott does, it’s likely he signs after Dallas extends its quarterback.

It’s not hard to compare these three quarterbacks statistically, considering they entered the NFL the same year and have played close to the same number of games. But for fun, let’s do a blind test of their numbers.

  • QB 1: 66.1% completions, 67 TDs, 25 INTs, 10,876 yards, 96.0 passer rating, 7.4 Y/A (48 games)
  • QB 2: 62.1% completions, 65 TDs, 26 INTs, 9,581 yards, 94.7 passer rating, 7.7 Y/A (38 games)
  • QB 3: 63.7% completions, 70 TDs, 28 INTs, 10,152 yards, 92.5 passer rating, 7.0 Y/A (40 games)
Can you guess which numbers belong to Goff, Prescott and Wentz? Their rushing numbers will probably give it away. QB 1 also has 944 yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground, while QB 3 has 542 yards rushing and two touchdowns. QB 2 has just 175 yards rushing but four touchdowns.

It’s difficult to say which quarterback deserves the most money, isn’t it? They’re all so close statistically, have all led their teams to the postseason and have each made the Pro Bowl (Goff and Prescott twice).

The answers: QB 1 is Prescott, QB 2 is Goff and QB 3 is Wentz.

Once again, what will likely separate these contracts is the timing of when they’re signed. Wentz could easily get the least of the three simply because he signed his deal first. He won’t complain about $32 million and his injury history certainly hurt his value, but signing on the dotted line first set the table for Goff and Prescott.

As Over The Cap projects, expect Goff to top Wentz’s deal, at least slightly, with Prescott coming in around the same number as the Eagles quarterback.

Small little minor problem with the comparisons above:

One of the QB’s numbers have been declining statistically every year. Prescott.

One of the QB’s numbers have increased statistically each year and has put his team in the Super Bowl. Goff.

One of the QB’s has been hurt 2 of the last 3 years.

Or to put it another way, one of these QB’s is an ascending player with monster year 3 numbers. The other two QB’s are struggling to prove their games scale to the NFL level where pure pocket passers prevail.

If the Cowboys pay Dak 34 million plus, that would collapse the franchise. Everyone knows that offense is all about Zeek. The real Prescott is the one stunk it up when Zeek wasn't on the field. Eagles did better without Wentz, too.

And just one other thing. Saw an article that said Cowboys regret waiting to pay Dak. That's another way of saying he wanted too much then, and he wants even more now.

Simply put, Cowboys can't win with Dak Prescott not getting paid. They'll lose talent when he does get paid (don't forget Zeek!) The only question will be who steps up in that division. I'd say Eagles or Redskins. This will collapse DAL and they know it.

Wentz on the other hand would have won MVP had he not gotten hurt. I think Eagles did good only signing him for a few years. He may not be the same guy.

As for the Rams and Goff. IDK what to think of Goff just yet. His QB rating tanks when under pressure. So he better have the best OL in the NFL, which costs money.

I am SO GLAD we don’t have Prescott as our QB, and having to pay him a top tier deal.

It’s bad enough having the top heavy QB deal on your cap, worse when you have to pay a mid-tier QB that level (Foles, Cousins, Mariota, Jimmy Crapolla, Prescott, etc.)

don't think too much. just enjoy having an accurate pocket passer. most of the guys that have better ratings under pressure are scrambling qbs.

goff can't run around like a chicken without a head then make a miraculous play but that's not a fault, that's just what he is, a pocket passer. i'm sure as hell happy the rams picked him instead of some qb that runs around all game. sure it's exciting but once goff masters the position every other team will be looking for a qb like him.

Like I said, friend. I'm don't know what to think just yet. I know he dropped some dimes on KC. His best days could still be in front of him, for sure.

Pretty sure that's every QB

Some QB's thrive when flushed from the pocket, friend. Like the other good fella said, though. Goff is a pocket passer ( legendary Kurt Warner was too and he's a stud).

It makes one wonder if the position is evolving in a similar way to when Faulk starting lining up in the slot. You see guys like Murray and Mayfield going number one.

You see more smaller, quicker, recievers like Odell, Hill, Landry, Cooks, Lockett, etc getting preferred over bigger recievers. The game appears to be changing. But then again, trends continue until the next big thing happens. A it takes is a guy like Belicheck to have success playing power football to set a new trend. It's what makes us love football, really. Goff had a nice season last year.

No brainer, Goff over Dak any day. No question. Goff has made elite plays. Prescott? Let me put it this way. If I had to choose between Prescott or Keenum, I'd really struggle with that choice. I'd probably go all out Two-Face and flip a coin.

I also figure in that dak played 10 more games than Goff yet only had 2 more tds. The biggest difference, however, between all 3 of these guys, is that Goff had a travesty of a rookke year due to massive ineptitude from the entire coaching staff.

Had mcvay been there Goffs numbers would be significantly better than the other 2 qbs

Here's RW's numbers not tanking under pressure:

Haha! Oh dude, Donald is on his own level. The strip sack TD on Mahomes was much worse than that play. Reid was a foolish to think Erving could handle him by himself.

However, BAL@KC. Mahomes 4th and 12, 48 yarder to the Cheetah is the best throw I've ever seen.

Hope, I don't tick nobody off here. But when I think of rolling outside the pock, I think of this. Roger's can't do this, either. Not enough arm.

Rolling out of the pocket has very little to do with the distance, it's mostly just that ability to throw on the run. Goff can do that as well, his second TD to Kupp in the Vikings game is a great example of that skill.

It makes you wonder how Sam Bradford would have looked in McVays system. Bradford was a stud throwing on PA fakes and boot legs when he wasn't under pressure.

Captain Checkdown would have looked a lot like Cousins in McVay's Redskins offense. We would have a "Poor Man's Cousins" basically, because Cousins for all his arm limitations at least has the cajones to stand in there with some heat.

I suspect Goff is going to break the bank when he gets paid. I've pretty much accepted that. He'll top Wilson's contract and will have a short time as the highest paid QB in the league.

The next decade is going to belong to Goff and Mahomes.

Thank you for the high praise of Mahomes, I appreciate that.

I guess we will just have to wait and see. Lots of interesting QB situations out there. Mayfield is getting tons of hype. Murray is said to be even better than him. Wentz was an MVP front runner at one time. Brady wants to play a few more years. Breese is still playing at a high level and his offense is stacked. Rogers isn't done. Rivers is a forgotten stud, Wilson too. Derek Carr revival looks to be on the horizon with AB. Love Drew Lock as a Tiger but he went to the wrong team (hes not a starter yet but he'll be a stud) Matt Ryan was MVP not long ago and still... not old. Lamar Jackson could be awesome if he could learn to throw earlier in a Playoff game. And sure, Ill agree Goff is right in the mix.

Much more in the mix than Winston, Mariota, Joe Flacco, Case Keenum, Joe Flacco, Ryan Tannehill, or Ryan Fitz (even though he has sports of magic.) And did I mention Donkey Joe Flacco? Hahaha

Yep. The Article skews the numbers by not including that little fact that Goff only started 7 games his rookie year.

Also Dak has never thrown over 23 TD’s in any year.

2018 Goff 32TD 12int 4668 yards 8.4 ypa

2018 Dak 22TD 8int 3885 yards 7.4 ypa

No one in their right mind would compare Dak to Goff.
