Doug Pederson on whether Eagles considered Colin Kaepernick: “We consider everybody”

The Eagles needed a quarterback. They signed one who had retired from the NFL, not one who has recently made clear his ongoing desire to get back in.

On Sunday, coach Doug Pederson was asked whether the team considered Colin Kaepernick before signing Josh McCown.

“We consider everybody, honestly,” Pederson said. “We consider everybody and do what’s best for the Eagles.”

Some have justified Kaepernick’s failure to get a call from teams looking for a bottom-of-depth-chart quarterback by pointing out that Kaepernick wouldn’t accept the contract that comes with such a gig. But with the Eagles reportedly giving McCown $2 million guaranteed on a contract worth up to $5.2 million to serve as the backup to a quarterback with a history of in-season injuries (which obviously increases the backup’s chances of playing), Kaepernick possibly may have accepted an offer that by definition has placed McCown at No. 2.

Kaepernick didn’t get a chance to.

With no specific explanation from Pederson as to why it wasn’t “best for the Eagles” to consider Kaepernick, many will believe that his NFL shunning continues. And if the Eagles — the team that gave Mike Vick his post-dogfighting-incarceration opportunity in 2009 — won’t bring Kaepernick in for a workout or talk to him about a possible contract given an RPO-fueled offense that seems to be suited to his run-pass skills, no one will.

In an age where your 3rd and 4th options usually tout the success or failure with a gameplan., Kaep's 1/2 of the field at a time doesn't blow anyone's skirt up. It would take flooding a zone, which would be just what defensive coordinators would do (zone defense under a cover 2. And then 2.5 seconds into the play...he would run. He was limited when he was at his best. And DCs figured it out. Now he just tries to keep himself in the conversation so he can keep getting endorsement money. Sad, but true.

Picking up Kap is like picking up Tebow. He's good enough to be a back up on any team, but he has an irrational fanbase manufacturing an unneeded QB controversy.
"Irrational fanbase"... I like that and it is so true. For that matter we could also add "Irrational Media" who feeds that irrational fanbase. ;)

No doubt. Look at the Rams running 2-5 looks this preseason. Teams around the league are prepping for the college offenses.

Bad comparison since it was a different situation when Vick was signed. Andy Reid had complete authority over pretty much everything. Pederson doesn't.

IMO it's stupid of them not to sign Kaepernick because it's almost certain Wentz will get injured again and lets face it..........McCown is washed up. He's 40 years old. And has played for 11 teams is his career.

This is going to blow up on them when (not if) Wentz goes down.

Amazing coincidence!
Posters that don't think Colin Kaepernick can play also have a problem with players that kneel.

Who would have thunk it?

Plenty of teams have backup quarterbacks the don't have the natural athletic ability of Kaepernick.

But if you don't like the guy because he started the kneeling controversy it's really easy to convince yourself that he can't play worth a flip.

Strangely convenient but silly.

Yep I’m sure it’s the politics that’s holding Colin back. If he didn’t have horrible mechanics and wasn’t a run then pass QB their might be a market for him.

Ohh and he’s a self made distraction. Why would a team pick him up? Talent doesn’t mean nothing if you have your head up your ass.

Well stated.

Even if he were willing to take a backup role for backup pay, his collusion grievance exacerbated the problem.

Plenty of backups are 2nd tier quarterbacks like Kaepernick.

I already mentioned that he would be a distraction.

If it wasn't for his politics he'd be a backup somewhere in the league.

IIRC, wasn't he reputedly asking for starters pay, or close to it, at least with playing time? Not only would that disturb the team's cap space, it probably made teams concerned about his arrogance - would he become a distraction if he did stay as the backup, especially since it was costing him big money? That's not politics, that is questioning if he was really willing to be a backup without causing a distraction. And once he blew that shot with Baltimore and took more time off, there is also the issue of whether his impressive physical skills and his less impressive playing skills would have deteriorated away from the game.

He was on record a long time ago saying he was no longer going to take a knee because his goal of getting people to talk about racial issues had been achieved. He also said he didn't want a guarantee of a starters job he just wanted into a camp to play it out and see if he got the #1 or #2 job.

He also won a lawsuit against the NFL and was awarded millions of dollars. So did Eric Ried who also kneeled as a 49er. He has a job in the NFL now though because nobody really knows him but everyone knows Kaepernick.

He's also a very average at best NFL QB. There are teams that would benefit from that kind ofQB play though.

But the stigma will prevent it.

Baltimore, Arizona, Denver, Tampa, Tennessee, just off the top of my head would be better off. They have SHIT at QB.

There are some REALLY shitty guys playing QB last year and this year.

It's like feast or famine at this position lately.
