tavon austin and brandon cooks are often compared but the two are very different. cooks is a much better wide out but austin is much better after the catch.
-----------
Tavon Austin isn’t better than Brandin Cooks at anything; Austin is a complete bust. Austin and Cooks are about the same size; Cooks has a 68% career catch rate, at 14.1 yards/reception. Tavon Austin has a 59% catch rate, at 8.7 yards/catch. Cooks has 3 career fumbles. Austin has 21. He averages a fumble for every 18 touches in his career.
Austin is a classic example that being fast doesn’t make you good. He can’t catch and can’t hold onto the ball even if he does catch it.
-----------
I remember the frenzy that this guy produced just before the draft. Teams trying to trade up to get him. His play has been that of a late round draft pick. Too small and weak. I always gave him a pass because prior to McVay they would just throw him 2 yard passes six times a game. But if McVay can’t use you then you just aren’t that good.
----------
I think he can play a role in someone’s offense but he’s going to have to take a low-money prove-it deal to show he has value to a team. If he’s willing to do that then he will probably be on a roster this fall.
----------
A two-yard reception is a deep throw to Tavon Austin; I don’t think the quality of the QB really much impacts the fact Austin is basically known as the guy who drops WR screen passes and fumbles jet sweeps.
----------
He’s at best a #3 WR and a serviceable returner, but his fumbles make him a second tier option at either position.
----------
Tavon Austin can still be extremely dangerous if he lands on a team with some completely different skilled receivers. His success in college at West Virginia was not a mirage. He is talented. He would actually be a major weapon on a team with an elite receiver like Julio Jones.
-----------
This guy could be a great option as a slot wr for a qb who uses them often like brady or brees
-----------------------------------------
My own comment: It's all about the money spent vs. the results of his play. Is he worth what he's getting paid? Imo no. Plus McVay seems to have a thing about fumblers. The telling sign was that T.A. was barely used in the playoff game vs. the Falcons. A fourth round pick sounds about right.
