I'll have to trust the McSnead. It would have been nice to have a 1st, but we had one hole in our offense and it is now filled. Cooks is an amazing addition, he seems to be very reliable, great hands, clutch catches (hello Sammy against the Falcons) and a team player.
I would be surprised if we had made that trade for just one year of him and I bet they have a plan to resign him.

We are clearly going for the Lombardi this year

So what you're saying is that the Rams should not draft an OT in the 1rst round, right?
Man, flush those 3 turds and the Rams have actually done a pretty good job-- only a couple other bad picks.
Just saying picks don't always work out, and that I don't think giving up the pick for Cooks is the end of the world. It may be the icing on the cake for another Super Bowl championship.

This thread has really confused me. People were willing to trade 2 firsts for OBJ but this for Cooks is too much. Both are on the last year of their rookie contract but Cooks isn’t going to cost as much to resign. Cooks is exactly what people have said we needed in this off season at the WR position. People were confident before any trade for OBJ we’d sign an extension, now people are upset we did this trade and an extension isn’t done.

I love this move and have faith in the front office.

I've read through this entire thread(okay so its my job) but anyway yeah i'm going to step away from my moderator role for 5 minutes just to get this out of my system.

Tough crowd, or should i say tough crowd when everything isn't perfectly ideal in the football world of business and talent acquisition.
Geezus folks, It's ONE first round pick. And we got a 4th back, lol.
You'd think that draft picks were golden eggs filled with All pro's. This team has had nothing but draft picks for the last 5 years, draft picks coming out of our ass.

This team is LOADED right NOW. Loaded on offense. Returning 10 of 11 starters and adding a stud like Cooks to the #1 offense in 2017. Loaded on special teams. Loaded on probably the best defensive front and secondary in the league. Loaded everywhere except....LB, and maybe OLine depth, a "superstar TE" [eye roll] and a backup hair stylist for Snead and blah blah blah.

Come on! The Rams haven't won a playoff game in like 13 years and we're worried about having picks and depth five years from now? Crazy perspective loss IMO.

"Ah man...what are we gonna do now? What if we can't re-sign Cooks? What if it's too much money? We aren't loaded at LB and we have no 1st or 2nd rd pick. We're fucked!"

Okay, back to my neutral role. Proceed.
I do think i'll post a poll tomorrow though.

Don't like this trade at first glance. We are gonna have a nightmare to balance the books in the upcoming few years. On the plus, we are built to win now...if Goff can make it happen. Gonna be an explosive year.

A 1st is a shit load to give up for a WR in the last year of his contract who is clearly eyeing a huge pay day. The Rams in essence have assumed that Cooks is a man they want here for the long term...or they've gambled serious draft capital. Again.

We need to hit our other picks out the park now, otherwise we are gonna be a top heavy talented team with below average players sprinkled in to make up the numbers. I guess you could argue that for many teams, but it is a concern.

I take on board what posters are saying and I'm not knocking the pure addition of Cooks. We've improved as a team today and I'm massively excited to see the fruition of all these crazy moves. I'm just in two minds.

These are the two key points IMO too...

We're building to get to the SB NOW. We seem to be building all star teams on D, O and ST... something's going to have to give at some point.

I have to be honest, I like Cooks as a WR, will be a nightmare for D's as he's more 3 dimensional than Watkins and OBJ, you never know where he's being lined up, great addition to the team, however, it's going to make the first couple of days of the draft a bit boring for a Rams fan...

Anybody check out Brandin Cooks highlight reel yet?

Precise route runner with killer speed and good hands in the McVay offense?

Jeebus.

Okay. I like Cooks more than OBJ. OBJ is objectively the better receiver, with more injury history and with the drug video, and demanding more money and the team demanding more in trade - i.e. more costly, with greater risk, but greater upside. I think McVay knows what to do with Cooks. I suspect the Rams think they can sign Cooks more easily than OBJ.

I hate not having the first. I trust the current regime to draft players we would love either in the first or in a trade down. But there is no real denying - anybody who doesn't say the Rams are Super Bowl favorites is hallucinating, at this stage. Adding to a very good team the best CB tandem in the league, the best free agent in Suh, and improving in WR is insane.

To be fair; even though we lost in the playoffs, 2017 was an insanely fun season. We had a real chance.

We all want to accomplish more - of course. However, put me in the group that doesn’t want to do so at the expense of falling back into a 15yr playoff drought.

That said; I think Cooks is a tremendous fit. Hard to argue that hole being filled better by the 23rd pick. So, the key to satisfying the masses is to get an extension done, IMO.

The only negative with Cooks, is that he isn't the jump ball, "go up and get it" in the endzone, WR/TE. I believe that speedy WR that McVay had in Washington, also needed a complement TE to make the offense really hum. Remembering Josh Reynolds college tape, he excelled in going up for the ball. We need Reynolds to do that in the NFL this year.

Just for reference, here are the last 10 picks at 23 overall

Evan Ingram

Laquon Treadwell

Shane ray

Dee ford

Sharif floyd

Riley Reiff

Danny Watkins

Bryan Bulaga

Michael Oher

Rashard mendenhall

Not a single pro-bowler. Some okay players but nothing overwhelming, not to say there wasn’t pro-bowl talent to be taken, but this wasn’t a top 5 pick being traded, this just goes to show how much of a crap shoot the draft is.

If we had a 2nd I would bet that’s what would have been traded...but we traded a 1st for an established, young player who is a perfect scheme fit, this is a good trade as long as we get him re-signed, which I’m sure we will.

Well, this is the way I look at it.....McVay coveted Cooks, felt he was a perfect fit for the offense, so I won't pay attention to the contract as many Rams are due paydays I will allude to that later. Cooks is similar to DeSean Jackson, but a better overall receiver as Cooks has the ability to stretch the field and make difficult catches in traffic, so that is the player McVay coveted, he signed off on tagging Joyner over Watkins, keep that in mind.

Some will make the claim that Watkins is more physical, but let's not forget Sammy seem to struggle with some of the routes and his durability, with the exception of last season has been an issue, Cooks has not had that issue. The Los Angeles Rams are trying to win the Super Bowl next season nothing wrong with that and with the fact that Cooks is a California Native and has the same agent as Jared Goff also factors in for the long term and IMO, I feel that Rams think they will be able to keep him, however, it only takes one team to overpay to make that plan go awry.

McVay's offense is predicated on the deep ball, the Patriots offense is more short passes going across the middle, setting picks and moving the chains, McVay loves taking his shots down the field, so one could surmise that McVay's offense is a better fit for Cooks and now the Rams don't have to worry trying to draft a WR in a draft class that does not have an extensive list of high profile players, however, giving up draft capital does have its downfalls.

Great example last season the Rams tried to include Trumaine Johnson in a deal for Cooks, however, the Saints decided to take a first round pick from the Patriots instead, which was 32nd overall and then drafted CB Marshon Lattimore (with their pick 11th) and are better off with a rookie contract for Lattimore, then they would have been making the deal for Johnson so there is always that risk and the Rams must hit on their secondary selections without a 1st and 2nd round pick, the Rams with all of their 4th's and 6th's must come away with an edge rusher, ILB and OL depth because you can't count on the offensive line being injury free like last season.

Overall I do believe that Cooks and Goff will have a better chemistry than Watkins and Goff did,for whatever reason, that bond never existed as it was obvious when Goff was pressed, he looked for Woods or Kupp. Really wanted to win a playoff game last season to get that monkey off our back, however, barring injury the Los Angeles Rams appear to be set up for success this season and Gentlemen, it's not our money, so hopefully, the Rams can keep this core intact and provide all of us a consistent winner, year in and year out as all of us Ram fans truly deserve.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...ff-brandin-cooks-built-rapport-prior-to-trade

The Los Angeles Rams traded for Brandin Cooks on Tuesday, but the receiver had already been building up a rapport with his new quarterback.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that Cooks and L.A. quarterback Jared Goff had already been throwing together this offseason, building up their chemistry.

It's not unheard of for a QB and receiver from different teams to link up in the offseason -- especially ones represented by the same agency. Any reps together will be to the Rams' advantage when workouts kick off this spring.

The duo could also have had some idea that they might eventually end up on the same squad.

The Rams have been attempting to acquire Cooks for more than a year before finally pulling the trigger on the move Tuesday. Rapoport reported L.A. tried to trade cornerback Trumaine Johnson to the New Orleans Saints for Cooks last offseason.

Rams general manager Les Snead told The MMQB's Peter King the Patriots trumped their offer for Cooks last offseason.

"At that time, we didn't have a first-round pick and New England did, and that made all the difference," Snead told King. "We discussed [cornerback] Trumaine Johnson with New Orleans, but we could not trump New England's one."

The genius of Bill Belichick was on display in his moves with Cooks. First, New England ships the No. 32 overall pick for the wideout in 2017. The Patriots milk a productive, 1,082-yard, seven-TD season out of the speedster still on his rookie deal. Then Belichick flips Cooks for a higher first-round pick the next season when it became obvious he wasn't going to pay the receiver's asking price on a long-term deal.

For the Rams, Rapoport reported they believe Cooks offers more of an impact player than they could have drafted with the No. 23 pick.

For the deal to make sense for L.A., Snead needs to lock down Cooks long term. The receiver, however, has just been handed a boatload of leverage and could wait out the Rams or push for a top-shelf deal that would make him one of the highest paid at his position.
