How many 6th round picks could you trade to get a 1st round pick? Asking for a friend.

And with Snead they have 5 hits and 2 misses, which is why I didn’t like giving up the first rounder. 5 years of a rookie deal or 1 year 8M and needing to sign him after?

My point is Snead’s first rounders have been very very good. We have mega deals and players coming up over the next 3 years and we just blew 8M this year and have no draft capital to replace some of those players.

I think it's worth it. Plus, we get the 4th back to help with our depth.

Rams are obviously just going for it. And man have they killed it big time doing so. No one wants to trade their 1st rounder. But, every draft pick is nothing more than an educated guess. In this case the Rams get their 4.33 forty yard dash, 1,000+ year receiver, right when they need him. Perfect fit. It's a weird situation as I hate losing the 1st rounder, but love we added Cooks!

Then, Cooks had no catches in a blowout victory over the Rams when the Saints scored 49 points. It was a big game for the team, and Cooks took the opportunity to use the aftermath to clamor for more targets.
"Closed mouths don't get fed," he told reporters. That week, reports (including from NFL Network) discussed the two sides parting ways in the offseason.
Internally, when Payton discussed the issue with Cooks, the receiver never left satisfied. The longtime coach pacified the issue, telling Cooks he'd get targets. And the following week he did -- a season-high seven catches the next week. But Cooks felt the elephant in the room -- Brees' arm strength not enabling him to find Cooks deep -- couldn't be talked about on any level.

Cooks will be much happier with Jared. They should get their timing right. Imagine all those misconnects with Watkins being TD and or long gainers. Offense will now be better. Risky again but, Rams have more money to resign him and he is a Cali guy.

Really wanted to put the finishing touches on the defense with first round pick.

I like Cooks. Better deal than going after OBJ. Overall hard to not like the deal at least for this year. I'm excited.

Nobody on this great Rams forum will convince me that McVay and Snead didn't do the right thing making this trade.

You can even throw in the one year rental mistake DE JA VU Watkins 1 year rental comparison and it doesn't bother me because the RAMS ARE OFFICIALLY now one of the 2018 season legitimate Superbowl favorites!!!

I'm not here to argue are debate with the naysayers. If I was running the Rams I make this trade yesterday, today and tomorrow! As well as all the others with Peters, Talib and Suh...

Thank you again Snead, McVay and Wade for making our Rams true legitimate Superbowl favorites for the upcoming season.

Brandin Cooks’ fifth-year option is actually a good deal for the Patriots
By Evan Lazar Mar 1, 2018, 8:00am EST

As the Patriots enter the offseason, Brandin Cooks’ contract situation, and whether or not he’s worth the roughly $8.5 million he’s due next season, has surprisingly become a storyline.

The fact that we are even talking about this is ridiculous. So ridiculous that I felt compelled to prove to you all that Cooks’ 2017 season was far from a disappointment, and that his fifth-year option is actually great value for the Patriots in 2018.

Cooks’ cap hit is tied for 22nd among wide receivers for the 2018 season and ranks sixth on the Patriots behind Tom Brady, Stephon Gilmore, Devin McCourty, Rob Gronkowski, and Dont’a Hightower.

And that salary cap hit is more than fair value for a player that by almost every relevant metric was a top 20 wide receiver in the NFL last season.

As we know, Cooks ranked 11th in the NFL last season with 1,082 receiving yards, two yards short of teammate Rob Gronkowski to land in the top ten. Cooks also hauled in seven receptions of 40-plus yards last season, which was tied for second-most in the NFL with some guy named Antonio Brown.

Only Kansas City’s Tyreek Hill had more receptions of 40 or more yards than Cooks in 2017 with nine.

When you look at the advanced metrics, Cooks’ rankings prove that he’s easily in the top 20 at his position as well. Cooks ranked in the top 20 in Football Outsiders’ DYAR metric (13th) and DVOA metric (17th), which measure a players efficiency on a down-to-down basis.

The Pats wideout also ranked 15th in PFF’s yards per route run stat (1.78) and eighth in passer rating when targeted (106.9) among 45 qualified wide receivers.

Those are solid numbers for any receiver, but when evaluating Cooks’ play in 2017, you also have to take into account that this was his first season playing in the Patriots’ complicated scheme and with quarterback Tom Brady, where production in year one is not always a given.

In fact, out of the 122 receivers that have caught a pass from Tom Brady in his career, only three other players have eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in their first season catching passes from Brady: Randy Moss (1,493 in 2007), Wes Welker (1,175 in 2007), and Troy Brown in Brady’s first season as the starter in 2001 (1,199). That’s pretty good company.

Oh, and only six receivers total including Cooks have eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in a season with the Patriots since 2001 (Welker, Gronk, Moss, Edelman, Brown, and Cooks).

Despite all that, Cooks’ first season in New England was seen as a disappointment by many.

However, the Patriots actually got great return on their investment when they traded their 2017 first-round pick and moved down 15 spots (#103 to #118) in the draft to acquire Cooks.

To put it simply, the Patriots essentially traded the 30th overall pick in the draft for Cooks according to the NFL Draft value chart.

In the Belichick era, only five of the teams 15 first round selections had a higher approximate value in a single-season as a member of the Patriots than Cooks’ 13 AV in 2017, according to Pro Football Reference: Logan Mankins (four times), Richard Seymour (three times), Dont’a Hightower (once), Jerod Mayo (once), and Vince Wilfork (once). So check that box off as well.

Cooks’ cap hit next season is pricey considering what the Patriots typically pay at the wide receiver position, but when you break it down, whom on the Patriots roster deserves more money than he does?

The only players in that discussion are free agent left tackle Nate Solder, defensive end Trey Flowers, and fellow wideout Julian Edelman who’s value to the team is undeniable. Solder will make more money than Cooks next season once he signs his new deal and Flowers is a bargain on the last year of his rookie contract.

As for Edelman, the Patriots’ slot machine has a cap hit of $4.7 million in 2018, which is significantly less than Cooks. However, Edelman signed his current deal in June of 2017 at age 31; Cooks is 24.

Edelman is also predominantly a slot wide receiver which lowers his value on the open market, and the perception is that he wouldn’t be as productive outside of the Patriots’ slot-friendly system. Plus, Edelman likely took a small pay cut to remain in New England where he has flourished, competed for Super Bowls, and caught passes from best friend Tom Brady. In other words, comparing Edelman’s current market value to Cooks’ isn’t an apples to apples comparison.

And who knows? Maybe with Edelman demanding attention in the middle of the field, Cooks has an even better 2017 season, and the Patriots offense certainly would have been worse off given Edelman’s injury if they hadn’t acquired Cooks. Cooks actually helped keep the offense rolling after significant injuries to Edelman, Chris Hogan, and Malcolm Mitchell last season.

Brandin Cooks didn’t put up Moss-like numbers like some predicted entering last season, and like the entire Patriots team, the season ended poorly for Cooks when he was knocked out of the Super Bowl with a concussion.

However, after a successful regular season, Cooks’ game-high 100 receiving yards in the AFC Championship Game helped the Patriots punch their ticket to Minnesota, and the expectations for Cooks were too high to begin with comparing him to a first-ballot Hall of Famer like Moss.

After the 2018 season, we can have an honest discussion about Cooks’ value to the Patriots given that he’ll likely command upwards of $11 million per year in free agency. But in 2018, Cooks’ deal is actually below his market value, and any talk of cutting him is absolute insanity.

Cooks is another "Golden Championship Piece" added to the puzzle :yess:

I like this move if we can sign him to a reasonable long term deal. He's a game breaker and he's young. That's not a sure thing from any late 1st rounder. He also let's us move on from Austin without skipping a beat - which is actually pretty important, because it does not appear Austin is part of the team's long term plans, but the fans that ignore his value to unleashing Gurley's full potential do so at their own peril.

If we can't re-sign him then Snead has some explaining to do. That would be two first round picks on two WRs in two years that end up being 1 year rentals. Not good.

I much prefer Cooks to Beckham. I went on record in the OBJ thread that the latter is somebody I want nowhere near this team and do not want to build around, even if he is talented. Not the sort of character you want on a team. No such concerns with Cooks.

that won't be hard. just by adjusting to a few of the deep throws he will probably double watkin's output.

That was actually my knee-jerk reaction post. I'm actually warming up to him playing the DeSean Jackson role in McVay's offense. Brady isn't the best deep thrower but Cooks was able to get the job done with the deep throws. Cooks may be 5'11" but his catch radius in the go route is bigger than Watkins despite his bigger frame.

Here is my personal theory that I would put money on:

After acquiring 4 defensive Pro Bowlers (Peters, Talib, Sheilds and Suh) Mcvay and Wade agreed that Mcvay now gets a turn to improve the offense. There are no LT or WR's projected at #23 that would impact the offense like Cooks could. The LT's in this draft are weak prospects at #23 and so are the WR's projected at #23.

While everyone here at Rams Central thought OLB or ILB was the pick at #23, the reality is Mcvay has a reputation to defend and had a hole to fill at WR. Cooks was the best available option for Mcvay at that point with the #23 pick as trade bait. It does impact our cap situation negatively down the road compared to getting an impact rookie deal in place, but the win now is quite attainable, so the ends (SuperBowl) literally justify the means (long term cap impact).

WWWWOOOOWWWW

Super-late to this thread, just hearing the news now.

Love it.

I wanted OBJ, but in my mind Cooks fits the bill just as well.

Two words:

DEEP THREAT.

The 2018 Rams desperately needed a deep threat receiver, someone to make the safety back off and open up the intermediate routes. And now they have him. I’m ecstatic, all the Rams major needs have been met, just need to get some depth at LB and OL. We have all the necessary ingredients for a serious run at the Lombardi. KoolAid for everyone!!!!!!

Can i get a "fuck yeah" on this trade?
Heard this as it broke on the way to work earlier. Cooks AND a 4th? For our 1st(#23) and a throwaway 6th?
DONE. Where do i sign....

What an addition. Love it. Perfect skill set for what we'd miss from Sammy. Also love it because we don't have to hear anymore about that immature clown in NY getting traded here.

That is a lot to pay for what is right now a one year rental. I don't care if he "might" re-sign....its a Watkins situation all over again instead this time is cost a first. I love me some Cooks, but that is still a steep price to pay with no sign that Cooks is interested in signing before trying FA.

Yes there is cap room next year, but the list of guys to extend is pretty long as well. Even if they don't bring all these guys back, here are the projected FA starters. Donald, Suh, Talib, Peters, and Joyner just at notables on D without much to speak of at LB outside of Barron (who everyone seems to want to cut already anyways). Gurley(possible 5th year option at around 10m), Saffold, Brown, Havenstein, and the mentioned Cooks are notables on O.

There is a LOT more than 100m in cap hits in that group alone. This is getting a 2018 or bust feeling going pretty quickly here.

IIRC the Rams now have two 4ths and a 3rd. They can move back up into the 2nd rd if they feel the need.
Love this trade.

You know, our team here has been so awful in years late that I love what's happened last year and now this off season. I dream of another Super Bowl. I don't dream about a dynasty. So, toss that #1 pick in the trash and freaking GO FOR IT! Can't wait to see the 19 Rams games next year!
