Dallas has the talent on defense but McCarthy teams have a history of below average coaching on that side of the ball.

Agreed and Dom Capers an excellent example, however, rumor is Mike Nolan who is now linebacker coach in New Orleans will be the DC and I'm not crazy about that hire whatsoever.

I think Jones loves Wade and might pounce on the chance to get him back in-house. Also Wade's approach would fit well with McCarthy, who isn't the most type A head coach.

Nolan would make sense for us too btw. He would be a better hire than Barry that's for sure.

Also of note is that Joe Barry is Rod Marinelli's son-in-law. I could see Marinelli joining our staff in some sort of role if he doesn't get a solid offer to coordinate.

I hope not because the Cowboys brought in Kris Richard because Marinelli was failing.

As I look around at the DC types I've arrived at a point where I feel older/proven ones aren't going to fit with what McVay reportedly wants, which is a varied and detailed approach vs each opponent where HE is part of that process. Basically Wade represented a set process where there was a simplistic blueprint and players were given flexibility but McVay just went away from that so I think it follows he's going to pursue guys who are hungry and maybe unproven and willing to deep dive the defensive scheme with him each week.

So IMO the guys like Capers, Nolan, Ryan, Marinelli, Bielema, etc., etc., etc., they're not going to be the direction he goes in. Those old/proven types are likely set in their ways and unlikely to want to go down that path with McVay.

Note this is all due to the tweets and rumors I've read in the past week now that insinuate McVay was more involved in the defense this year than people realize, and that he wants varied front type capabilities and approach much like the lesson Belichick taught him in the Super Bowl.

All that time he's deep diving on defense means he's going to need a real OC to help him do the same on offense right? He can't spend 15 hours a day on each (hypothetically).

Cowboys BLOW, regardless of coaching. That is all.

Agreed. Which is why he needs to make some more accountability decisions with the offensive staff IMO. So he can split time at the least to ensure gameplans on each side of the ball are what he wants.

I don't think I've ever heard of anything more scary than this.

If this is true, then did he just cut loose a guy who almost single-handedly beat the Patriots in the SB (while our offense struggled in that same SB), and then continued to struggle most of the season?

Did that time spent on D take away from required time on O? Only so many hours in a day no matter how good you are.

I'm going to hope this is all conjecture...

I disagree Jack.

Belichick does this. He oversees gameplans for both sides of the ball. This is part of the reason why he's better than everyone else btw. Not only was he an elite DC, but he's grown his knowledge of the game on the other side and the Patriots benefit from it as coordinators and coaches get poached.

McVay is on that path and that's a good thing. I love Wade, but I love McVay as our Head Coach more. Build it around him and profit. IMO.

Rams, Browns to consider Kevin O’Connell as offensive coordinator?
Originally posted on Pro Football Rumors | By Zach Links | Last updated 1/7/20

Kevin O’Connell, in all likelihood, will be out of a job soon. Washington is poised to hire Scott Turner as its new offensive coordinator, and O’Connell has been granted permission to speak with other teams about offensive coordinator opportunities. Once the dust settles, O’Connell could land with the Rams or Browns, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL.com and Albert Breer of The MMQB (Twitter links).
O’Connell has been referred to as “the next Sean McVay” by many in previous years – he’s a young and highly respected offensive guru who took on McVay’s former role in 2019. The two could unite on the same staff in Los Angeles, where McVay is also seeking a new coordinator on the other side of the ball.
Meanwhile, O’Connell could wind up as the Browns’ offensive coordinator, if Josh McDaniels is hired. As a rookie quarterback for the Patriots in 2008, O’Connell was coached by McDaniels, who was New England's QBs coach at the time. After that, O’Connell bounced around the league until 2012 and, eventually, transitioned to the sidelines.

I totally get it. And you're probably right.

BUT, in a season where we consistently showed we didn't plan well enough or adjust well enough on offense (until the last few games of the season when we finally started moving the pocket), I just don't like the optics.

If I have to hear how the Bears figured McVay out, and everyone has his number now, I'm going to puke. So it just feels like he should have had the team in a position to smoke the likes of the Steelers etc before venturing out into the defense and messing with a formula that worked late last year.

Optics are for people responsible to the public and people who want to look good instead of be good. McVay is responsible to Kroenke and his only measurement is performance.

I certainly hope it is related more to this, than a sign of instability.

Wade and Bones are very good coaches.
This better work out.

I'd prefer McVay find himself a strong run game OC, as that is his weakest area of knowledge. Still think it'll be Callahan.
