Has jason Garrett been fired ?Three fired today and another one in the works with Marrone plus the two already fired. That's some significant change over.
Nobody knows for certain, reports are the Cowboys facility is on lockdown. Richard is now being reported to get an interview for the Giants job. Hard to do that if you haven't been fired and the wording on it wasn't that they asked the Giants for permission to interview him. Cowboys position is a big question mark atm.Has jason Garrett been fired ?
Thanks , I'm at working and just kinda doing a hit and run on my phoneNobody knows for certain, reports are the Cowboys facility is on lockdown. I don't like the idea of us trying to find two 4-3 DEs. Now, granted, we could run one of them as an elephant type of course (or Leo as the Pete Carroll branch calls it) so it would really be one hand in the dirt DE required, but I'm not sure any of the DCs on the market, of whom multiple will be 4-3 types, are worth all that effort. We already are going to see some transition. Brockers, Littleton (the other ILB spot as well?), Fowler and Matthews potentially being cut. If we're going to change this is the year to do it.
And yet there are more top defenses running a 4-3 than a 3-4. Yes that could be due to many factors. That wasn’t however my point. Personnel change is coming regardless of whether we change our DC or not. Also a big case was made when Wade came aboard three years ago how his defense wasn’t that different from a 4-3 anyways so maybe it won’t be a huge deal. I’m more interested in how a new DC would run coverages with us trading for Ramsey and having the young DB’s for it.I don't like the idea of us trying to find two 4-3 DEs. Any scheme works of course if it has the right talent. But I just feel like the 3-4 is a better base scheme for today's NFL because of the speed and uncertainty on which side will bring the 4th rusher.
Also we've gone far enough down this 3-4 road now and have a bunch of developing OLBs that I'd like to see reap some of the fruits of that in the current scheme.
Lastly, the Rams of today don't need to limit their pursuit to just the guys who are out of jobs. It's a great place to start, but when the best coaching castoffs on that side of the ball are the wrong scheme maybe they need to plunder some positional coaches on successful 3-4 base staffs. And IMO the place to start is with guys who have a grasp of gameplanning the pass game for the top spot, i.e. secondary coaches.
Next year, DC Rex Ryan speaks to the team " Me not We!!!!...er... Did I fuck that up, Sean?"I think McVay is more likely to stick with the base scheme OS. If the right coach comes available, well, maybe he'll make the move. But you don't want to get into that mode of changing the scheme around every time you change your DC.
Personally I have respected the Belichick tree of defense for many years and it's gotten better with age. Way that I see things going is the Rams bring in guys who want to work with the same basic direction and base we have now and keep building on it. From there some guys blitz more, some zone more, some love the zone blitz, etc. But the key is not needing to get crazy with personnel with every changeover because if we brought in say Dan Quinn and our defense has a good season he's gonna be gone to another HC job quickly and here we are again maybe changing it over again.
Some options we might see on the interview list IF they are moving away from Wade...
Rex Ryan. He's a big mouth SoB and many of us don't like him but they might bring him in and at least pick his mind. Extensive knowledge of the 3-4 unlike his hair-flipping brother. And I like how he handles players although I'm probably alone there lol.
Greg Manusky. IMO he's a lot better football coach than he's given cred for. Familiar with a 3-4 and hybrid type scheme. Aggressive play caller just the way I like my DCs too.
Keith Butler. He just finished his last year of his contract in Pittsburgh and there were rumors his final year in which he took over the linebackers was actually a demotion. Either way he might be in play and his knowledge of 3-4 scheme is excellent not to mention he's a wizard with linebacker development.
Dom Capers. This guy gets a lot of flak and is one of the old guard who is getting long in the tooth but he's a solid 3-4 coordinator and very creative in his blitz packages. Chances are if he gets back into things it will be with Mike McCarthy (if he gets a job) but he's knowledgeable and available to interview.
Like many here I prefer they scour the coaching staffs for younger guys (like Belichick Jr) but there are certainly options out there and if/when any of the above are interviewed keep in mind teams often do that with guys they might not want to hire just to get their take on their personnel. It's like a free scouting service in many ways.
Yeah he's a bit of a jerk. But I'd be interested to get his take on my personnel so would interview him for sure.Next year, DC Rex Ryan speaks to the team " Me not We!!!!...er... Did I fuck that up, Sean?"
Didn’t hair-flipping brother turn down DC job with us because we DIDN’T run 3-4 at the time and that was his jam?Rex Ryan. He's a big mouth SoB and many of us don't like him but they might bring him in and at least pick his mind. Extensive knowledge of the 3-4 unlike his hair-flipping brother.
That plus I think Fish probably had requirements in how things would be done. But yeah any DC worth his salt who knows he can get a job (or even thinks he can) isn't going to want to sign on to run a scheme he doesn't love or is less familiar/comfortable with.Didn’t hair-flipping brother turn down DC job with us because we DIDN’T run 3-4 at the time and that was his jam?
Also, Rex is angling for HC at this time.
Interesting consideration there Ramlock and nice post. Some SEC coordinators-
Dave Aranda -LSU
Kevin Steele - Auburn
Todd Grantham - Georgia
All are mature coaches, running versions of 3-4 and facing Spreads, RPO’s and Air Raids with success.
Names in the hat.

This reminds me of when the Giants hired Pat Shurmur. Not exciting AT ALL. Franchise on pause.
Not a bad coach, but you’ve hired a slightly better version of Jeff Fisher. Nothing like knowing you’re probably replacing your coach in 3yrs... when he shows the exact same results he always has.
Thank goodness we have a fresh mind as our coach.
Isn't Grantham at Florida ?
If this was strictly a Snead pick, my money would be on Steele for some reason or other ...
yes, he is.
He coached UGA, Louisville, Miss. St and now Florida. Before that, Colts, Texans, Browns and Cowboys.
Worked for Capers, Crennel, Mora and.....
Wade Phillips
